  1. A grand total of 1 in the past 50 years..... It just so happens to be their most recent 3rd round win WAY back in 1989 (before most of their current team was even born) over a 12-0-0 Montgomery team. They won 20-19 in a nailbiter. Other than that, they've lost every single game they've played against teams with 11 wins or more. ;D There sure seems to be a lot of cockiness with not a lot to back it up, at least as far as tradition is concerned.... How many wins does WO-S have vs teams entering the game with 11 wins or more?? I count 10 in just the past 20 years 1986 Beat 11-1-0 Jasper 21-15 Beat 12-1-0 New Braunfels 28-12 Beat 14-1-0 McKinney 21-9 1987 Beat 12-0-0 C.E. King 27-13 Beat 13-0-0 West Columbia 30-7 Beat 11-1-1 Kerrville Tivy 21-7 Beat 12-3-0 Rockwall 17-7 1988 Beat 13-0-0 Kerrville Tivy 28-14 2000 Beat 13-1-0 Calallen 27-21 2007 Beat 11-0-0 Giddings 28-19 And if I'm not mistaken.... I believe we were the underdog, picked to lose ALL but a couple of those games (I think we were favored in the '87 Semis and Finals but not in any of the others)..... You're deluding yourselves if you think you're the biggest, baddest team Coach Hooks has ever had to prepare the Mustangs to play. All I can say is good luck! You're probably going to need it.... 8)
  2. Not that I ever put much faith on this particular rating system... but Southeast Texas is making their best showing of the season BY FAR this week.... I don't believe any area team had cracked the top 10 until now.... Now there are 3 local teams in the top 8. Link to Original Source 1. Katy 2. Liberty Hill 3. Waco La Vega 4. Galena Park North Shore 5. West Orange-Stark 6. Cypress Ridge 7. Dayton 8. Lumberton 9. Tatum 10. Lamar Consolidated 11. Giddings 12. Pearland 13. Ft Bend Clements 14. Cypress Falls 15. 3. The 1998 and 2002 squads have the most wins in Dayton history, both going 12-1. The 1961 and 1931 squads came the closest to winning a state title. The 1961 team made it to the state quarterfinals. The 1931 team didn't have the opportunity to win a state title as the UIL didn't allow the lower classifications to play more than 2 playoff games, but the team was undefeated (11-0-1) and were one of only 7 Regional Champs across the state in Class B that year.
  4. It's a rather complicated and convoluted history but I'll try to make it simple as possible: In 1926 there were only two classifications Class A and Class B. Class A teams played to a state title. Class B teams only played one Bi-District game and that was it. Starting in 1928 the UIL allowed the Class B teams to play a 2nd round playoff game and multiple Class B Regional Champs were named from then up until 1939. In 1939 the UIL expanded the Classification system and introduced a Class 2A (which played to a state title), a Class 1A which played to a Regional championship, and the Class B teams were once again only allowed to play one bi-district game. In 1946 the UIL started allowing BOTH Class B and Class 1A teams to play to a Regional Championship. In 1951 the UIL expanded yet again to the modern system of five 11-man classifications (4A, 3A, 2A, 1A and . The four larger classifications were allowed to play to a state championship but the Class B schools continued to only play two playoff games with multiple regional champions named every year until 1972. In 1972 the Regional championship system was finally abolished and all 5 classifications played to a state title. So the simple answer to your question is 1972. This explains why there are many programs that have undefeated seasons prior to 1972 but no state titles (i.e. Barbers Hill has had 7 seasons going undefeated but only 2 state titles, Hamshire-Fannett went 12-0-0 in it's first year of existence in 1961, Hull-Daisetta went 11-0-0 three consecutive years back in the late 1930's when they held the national record for consecutive wins - 43 in a row, PN-G's only perfect season was in 1946 when they went 11-0-0 and were 1A regional champs)
  5. It should be pretty easy to do.... the only thing I have close to that that's already done is the following, it shows the location of almost half of all the titles that have ever been won. I made it as a "Texas High School Football Geography Quiz", thus the numbers labelling each of the markers. The 5A crowd did not do well at ALL on this but the 3A crowd worked together and had all but one of the answers correct within an hour. I'll leave it up without the answers if anyone wants to give it a shot. Here's the original post verbatim: Okay... the 5A folk did NOT do particularly well on this one, which is to be expected. Let's see if anyone a bit more acquainted with the smaller towns of Texas can do better. The following map shows the 36 Texas high school programs that have won 3 or more UIL 11-man football state titles (1A thru 5A) since they started awarding them back in 1920. Combined, these 36 schools have won 155 state titles which is 44% of the all-time total ever awarded. They are labelled differently according to how many championships they won: Dark Blue = 7 titles each Red = 6 titles each Green = 5 titles each Light Blue = 4 titles each Yellow = 3 titles each How many can you name without cheating and looking at (1) a map or (2) a list of past state champions?
  6. You mean the 42-3 win by Newton? It's up there...
  7. I'll be happy to post the math to back this up but I imagine most would not want to see it... but when you calculate it all out: On average, La Vega has been holding their opponent's to 10 points less than the opponent's scoring average and La Vega is scoring 15 points more than their opponents usually allow WO-S has been holding their opponent's to 16 points less than the opponent's scoring average and WO-S also is scoring 15 points more than their opponents usually allow Where's the huge advantage La Vega's supposed to have? Yes, they're scoring 41 points per game, compared to WO-S' 36, but a big part of that is that their strength of schedule is significantly lower than WO-S. Also, if you just look at WO-S' last 9 games (which is really when the offense got rid of their stagefright) WO-S is averaging 43 points per game. La Vega has averaged 375.3 offensive yards/game against opponents with a combined record of 51-64 WO-S is averaging 365.9 yards/game against opponents with a combined record of 65-52 All I'm seeing is that our offense is just as good as theirs and our defense is much better (holding our opponents to a touchdown less per game than La Vega)
  8. Here you go.... prior to their Bi-District win this year, Livingston's most recent playoff win (not settled by a tiebreaker) was in 1935!! Livingston Playoff History
  9. Not to jinx anybody but I just realized that neither Lumberton, Kirbyville nor Dayton have EVER advanced past the 3rd round of the playoffs in the history of their respective programs. Here's hoping all 3 make history this week! Newton will be playing their 78th playoff game ever, WO-S their 51st, Dayton their 37th, Kirbyville their 27th and of course Lumberton their 3rd and all 5 teams will be playing opponents they've never faced in the playoffs before. 10. You're forgetting their 20-12 win over 5-5 2A team Marlin
  11. Region I teams in GREEN Region II teams in BLUE Region III teams in YELLOW Region IV teams in RED For those of you who have ever wondered "Where the heck is Turkey Valley?" You will find the answer here... ;D All 144 remaining playoff teams going in to Week 3 of the playoffs from 6-man all the way up to 5A are labelled on the maps below. It doesn't look like any particular part of the state is dominating but it is still early.... West Texas Texas Panhandle Dallas-Fort Worth Area Central Texas East Texas Southeast Texas South Central Texas South Texas
  12. I have both WO-S and Kirbyville winning in squeakers.... The ratings have predicted 54 out of 69 3A playoff games correctly so far! (78%) ;D
  13. One thing WO-S has in their favor is coaching experience winning later round playoff games.... the 3rd round has been a real stumbling block for La Vega as they've qualified for the playoffs 22 times in the school's history but only advanced past the 3rd round three times, the most recent time being back in 1989. La Vega has 22 All-Time Playoff Appearances They were 1A Regional Champs in 1941, winning 2 playoff games (which is the furthest the UIL allowed in the lower classifications at the time) They lost in the 1st round 11 times They lost in the 2nd round 2 times They lost in the 3rd round 4 times (1950 in 1A, 1953 in 2A, 1994 & 2006 in 3A) They lost in the 4th round 2 times (1987 & 1989 in 3A) They lost in the 2A State Finals in 1951

  17. And believe it or not... the only games this season in which WOS has lead by more than 8 pts were against Bridge City, Orangefield and Hardin-Jefferson.... this is the 4th biggest halftime lead out of 12 games this season.
  18. I realize there are still 5 weeks left of the playoffs, but football season is actually over for more than 75% of the schools in the state and the vast majority of the work that it takes to update these is done. I will continue to update until the season is completely over. Just realize that the win (and loss) totals will increase for a few programs listed below. The first table is the combined statewide stats for all 1016 teams that competed in 2007 1A thru 5A. After that is the exact same thing, but only for the 174 teams that are currently 3A. I'm working on all the other classifications and will have them all up soon. I think SE Texas makes a pretty good showing. WO-S, Barbers Hill and Newton all made several appearances on the statewide rankings and half of the schools from 21-3A make at least one appearance on the 3A chart. Statewide Cumulative Win Totals over the past 50 seasons Cumulative Win Totals among the 174 Current 3A Programs over the past 50 seasons (teams in RED are currently still active in the playoffs and their numbers will change)

  21. And in 2000 we beat Bay City 10-7, and it would turn out to be their only loss of the season as they went on to win the 4A Division I state championship.
  22. Once again, is the graphic not showing up? We may have lost to Vidor, Nederland and Lincoln, but we beat district champ and state finalist PN-G that year. Just one of the seven 4A district champs WO-S beat in the past nine seasons. PNG in '99, Lincoln in '01, PNG again in '03, Nederland in '04, Central in '05, and Dayton in both '06 and '07 Were it not for a 1 point loss to '02 District Champ Ozen, we'd be undefeated against 4A district champs over the past 11 consecutive seasons.
  23. Is the graphic not showing up? All of those rankings are listed... Giddings was #3 last year (Cuero was #1 pretty much the entire season in '06) McKinney was only #5 when we played then in '86. They were #1 for a couple of weeks in the regular season but lost to Paris in district and Corsicana took over the #1 ranking after that.
