  1. You may think there have been more, but believe it or not the game vs. Giddings this Friday will be only the 5th time in WO-S history that the Mustangs will be facing a #1 ranked team in the long running AP poll. They are 1-3 in the first 4 games, but all three of the losses were quite respectable as WO-S only lost by 11, 11 and 13 points, and they were actually even closer than the scores would suggest. Against Yates, the now legendary 1985 5A State Champions, the Mustangs entered the 4th quarter tied with Yates 6-6 and holding a decided lead in penetrations (this was in the era before overtime). But they weren't able to hold them off in the final quarter and lost the game in a heartbreaker. Against the 1995 4A State Champs it was deja vu with eerie similarities to the 1985 game. WO-S was tied with La Marque 7-7 with less than 4 minutes left in the game, with both teams tied in both penetrations and first downs. La Marque scored 11 points in the final 3 minutes to take the 18-7 win. WO-S hasn't had the best of luck against #1 ranked teams except for one very big exception West Orange-Stark vs. #1 Ranked Teams 1981 #1 in 5A Port Arthur Jefferson 31 - WO-S 20 1985 #1 in 5A Houston Yates 19 - WO-S 6 1987 #1 in 5A Aldine MacArthur 3 - WO-S 6 (to date this remains the only time in history that a lower classification Texas team has beaten a #1 ranked 5A team) 1995 #1 in 4A La Marque 18 - WO-S 7 2007 #1 in 3A Giddings ?? - WO-S ?? I just updated the WO-S history to include AP rankings of both the Mustangs at the time of each game AND AP rankings of their opponents. I forgot how highly ranked both Jasper and WOS were in almost every single game they played in the early days of their series. One final note: Congrats to the Mustangs on setting a new all-time high winning percentage for the school as they moved above 79% for the first time in school history, surpassing the previous peak of 78.96% which was set after the win over Calallen in 2000. The current top 10 highest winning percentages in the state as of 11/20/07 out of 1016 total teams 1. 79.01% West Orange-Stark (279-73-3) 2. 78.02% Odessa Permian (452-123-12) 3. 77.23% Houston Yates (367-104-12) 4. 77.14% El Paso Chapin (54-16-0) 5. 75.87% Southlake Carroll (408-127-8) 6. 75.16% Austin Westlake (340-110-7) 7. 74.68% Dallas Carter (348-115-9) 8. 73.73% Highland Park (695-239-27) 9. 72.97% El Paso Franklin (108-40-0) 10. 72.03% Pflugerville Connally (85-33-0)
  2. I don't know why it is, but they are DEFINITELY a 2nd half team. It's made many a fan a nervous wreck this season with the score way too close for comfort at halftime in the majority of the games. In 8 out of 11 games WO-S has either trailed or lead by 7 pts or less at halftime. Luckily 6 out of 11 opponents were shutout in the 2nd half and all 5 of the remaining opponents were held to only 6 or 7 pts). No team has yet to score more than 7 against the Mustangs in the 2nd half. A few halftime scores from the season.... Dayton 14 WO-S 0 (WOS outscores Dayton 22-0 in the 2nd half to win 22-14) WO-S 0 LC-M 0 (WOS scores 6 in the 2nd half to win 6-0) Bay City 8 WO-S 6 (Bay City outscored WOS 7-6 in the 2nd half to win 15-12) --- the only team to outscore WOS in the 2nd half this year WO-S 7 Hamshire-Fannett 0 (WOS outscores H-F 27-7 in the 2nd half to win 34-7) WO-S 12 Kirbyville 7 (WOS outscores Kville 19-0 in the 2nd half to win 31-7) WO-S 7 Silsbee 6 (WOS outscores Silsbee 10-0 in the 2nd half to win 17-6) Jasper 14 WO-S 13 (WOS outscores Jasper 28-7 in the 2nd half to win 41-21) WO-S 21 Orangefield 7 (WOS outscores Orangefield 28-6 in the 2nd half to win 49-13) WO-S 12 Coldspring 7 (WOS outscores Coldspring 39-7 in the 2nd half to win 51-14) The only games that WOS didn't score the majority of their total points in the 2nd half were the Hardin-Jefferson (39-0 at halftime, 25-0 in the 2nd half to win 64-0) and Bridge City (47-0 at halftime, 26-0 in the 2nd half to win 73-0) games, and the only reason for that was that both games were pretty much decided before halftime. WO-S has scored at least 25 second half points in 6 of their last 8 games They've scored at least 3 second half TD's in 7 of their last 8 games, 8 out of the 11 they've played If they can score 3 times total against Giddings, I think they have a very good chance of winning the game depending on how the kicking game goes. 4 TD's should win it hands down.
  3. Giddings will be tough, that's for sure, but they have yet to convince me that they can compare to last year's team.... after the past two weeks WO-S has now scored more points than Giddings and allowed less... Giddings' offense has scored over 100 pts less this year than they had at this point last year (that's 10 pts less per game) WOS thru Week 11 2007 Pts for 400 Pts against 97 4 Opponents with a winning record: 10-1 Kirbyville, 8-3 Dayton, 7-4 Jasper, 6-5 Bay City Giddings thru Week 11 2007 Pts for 359 Pts against 123 3 Opponents with a winning record: 9-1 Caldwell, 8-3 Navasota, 7-4 Sealy WOS thru Week 11 2006 Pts for 438 Pts against 76 Giddings thru Week 11 2006 Pts for 473 Pts against 137
  4. I'd say it was more of an old rivalry than a new one.... Dayton and Lumberton have been playing each other going back all the way to 1970 with Dayton leading the series 12-5-1 Lumberton's wins came in 1971, 1973, 1992, 1993 and then 2007
  5. Enough people have been requesting that I continue posting them so here goes... It took a while to get the perfect fit this week because I had a couple of typos entering the data and I just now found where I went wrong. I'm still at work so I'm posting it a bit differently right now.... The link is to an Excel spreadsheet I've saved online. Hopefully everyone that's interested will be able to see it. I'll post the same format as last week if there are people who can't access this format. I've included the individual ratings for each game datapoint so you can see the actual numbers that went in to each rating. The game ratings are listed for each team in chronological order from left to right (starting with Game 1, Game 2, etc.). And once again, ONLY games between two 3A opponents are included which is why some teams have 10 games averaged in and some have as few as 4 or 5. This weeks ratings include the results of every game played between two 3A opponents during the 2007 regular season. Division I Playoff Teams are in Blue Division II Playoff Teams are in Red Click the link -----> 2007 WOS87 3A Power Ratings for Week 11 And just as an appetizer, here are the highest rated 3A non-playoff teams for 2007. With 93 teams qualifying for the playoffs, here are the teams that didn't qualify but still rated in my top 93. 16. Silsbee 19. Waco Connally 28. Hamshire-Fannett 34. Bellville 38. Van 51. 9. I finally updated my 3A District Champion graphics to be color-coded like the 4A and 5A ones are.... here is the new, updated version with the 2007 Champs added in. This season Abilene Wylie notched their 9th consecutive #1 Playoff seed, tying the 3A record set by Vernon from 1989-1997. I realize that there are many districts and many years in which there were 2, 3 or even 4 district co-champs, tri-champs, etc. officially proclaimed but this is a table of the team that got the top seed for each district going in to the playoffs, or in other words, this is a table of teams that would have qualified for the playoffs if the 1 team per district rule (pre-1982) was still in effect. Please let me know if you see any obvious errors and I will correct them... The color coding is indicative of the general location of the entire district for each particular year, not the individual team listed, thus for example, Madisonville could possibly be dark blue when part of a district including mainly CenTex area teams, in brown when in a district of primarily DFW area teams and light blue when in a district primarily of East Texas teams. Region I-3A District Winners (1980-2007) Far West Texas - dark Red Panhandle - Green West Central Texas - Purple North Central Texas/DFW area - Brown Central Texas/Austin area - dark Blue Region II-3A District Winners (1980-2007) North Central Texas/DFW area - Brown Central Texas/Austin area - dark Blue East Texas - light Blue Southeast Texas/Greater Houston area - Light Red Region III-3A District Winners (1980-2007) Region IV-3A District Winners (1980-2007) Southeast Texas/Greater Houston area - light Red Central Texas/Austin area - dark Blue South Texas/San Antonio-Corpus-Rio Grande Valley - Orange

  15. This is what I've come up with from the results tonight... 3A Division I Playoff Projection after Week 10 3A Division II Playoff Projection after Week 10
  16. the winner of this one plays Splendora
  17. It's all math... the numbers derive themselves Here's the way it works: Kirbyville has played 9 3A Opponents they beat Cleveland by 27. Cleveland's rating of -2.10 + 27 = 24.90 they beat Carthage by 1. Carthage's rating of 33.75 + 1 = 34.75 they beat Liberty by 18. Liberty's rating of -1.31 + 18 = 16.69 they beat Jasper by 15. Jasper's rating of 35.03 + 15 = 50.03 they lost to WOS by 24. WOS' rating of 49.73 - 24 = 25.73 they beat Orangefield by 7. Orangefield's rating of 11.20 + 7 = 18.20 they beat Hardin-Jefferson by 36. H-J's rating of -8.90 + 36 = 27.10 they beat Bridge City by 42. BC's rating of -14.99 + 42 = 27.01 they beat Silsbee by 1. Silsbee's rating of 27.87 + 1 = 28.87 The average rating for all 9 games is: (24.90 + 34.75 + 16.69 + 50.03 + 25.73 + 18.20 + 27.10 + 27.01 + 28.87)/9 = 28.14 which is Kirbyville's rating. The 16.69 and 18.20 performance ratings in the Liberty and Orangefield games hurt your rating the most. Whereas the 15 pt win over Jasper was the highest rated game of the season at 50.03. Barely winning over a low rated team can hurt you a lot more than barely losing to a high rated team.

  23. Due to multiple requests for these I've put together the projections for the 4A playoff brackets for Region III and IV in the Division I bracket and for all of Region III in the Division II bracket. A lot of this could change depending on the outcomes of games played this coming week but these are the current favorites to qualify. If I have more time I'll try to fill in the remainder of the two brackets.
  24. We should be able to hold our own against Giddings as they haven't been as dominant this season as they were last year. They're averaging 36 points per game and allowing 13. At this time last season, playing the exact same opponents, they were averaging 39 points per game and allowing 12 (and Wimberley and Hutto were MUCH better last year when Giddings played them) On paper, I say Jasper could probably give them a run for their money as I have Jasper up in the top 10 now in the 3A power ratings....
