Part of the problem is that there has never been any consistency in the number of high schools fielding UIL football teams in Beaumont. In the past 50 years there have been 7 major changes ranging from having only 2 competing schools citywide from 1986-1997 (Central and West Brook) to having 6 competing schools from 1967-1974 (Beaumont High, South Park, Forest Park, Charlton-Pollard, French, and Hebert) How did all of those teams arrange their respective schedules?? Over the past 50 years the longest period without any major change was the 11 year period from '86-'97 so it makes since that there are currently only 2 major stadiums in use. They only needed 2 stadiums until just 9 years ago. I have a pretty complete post on the history of public schools in Beaumont over in the historical section which you can get to using the link below: Timeline of Beaumont High Schools

I posted these on the 5A boards today by request but Southeast Texas made a fine showing so I thought I'd post them here as well... I crunched out these today from the database... the first is rankings by furthest advancement in the playoffs all-time (all programs with 3 state titles are ranked ahead of all programs with 2 state titles, etc.), the second is rankings by point total. The columns listed are Rank - 1st yr qualifying - Program - State Titles - Losses in Finals - Losses in Semifinals - Losses in Quarterfinals, etc. Points were calculated by giving 64 points for a state title, 32 points for losing in the finals, 16 points for losing in the Semis, 8 points for losing in the Quarterfinals, etc. The numbers listed were calculated by ON-THE-FIELD RESULTS so before any of you Converse Judson fans jump on me, I will be making adjustments but I wanted to go ahead and post the preliminary numbers. Top Texas Football Programs of all-time
WOS87 replied to KFDM COOP's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Here are the numbers I calculated for southeast Texas... some of which are a bit different than those above. Ties are counted by the majority of statisticians as one-half of a win, so winning percentage is calculated by the following formula: (wins + ties/2) / (total # of games played) -
Top Texas Football Programs of all-time
WOS87 replied to KFDM COOP's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
The guy who put those stats together IS counting PAM as a continuation of TJ... even though there are 3 different historic schools that make up Memorial... Since I've had so many comments in the past about how comparing all-time winning percentages between programs of vastly different ages gives an unfair advantage to the younger programs, I actually refute that. Surprisingly, it's the OLDER programs that actually seem to have an advantage! Here are the highest winning percentages among all current 3A schools statewide with the programs divided up by age. Just compare the winning percentages of the #8 ranked teams in each of the following categories and you see a consistent fall as you move to the younger programs. In fact, among the 91 programs in 3A that currently have a winning percentage above 50%, only 10 of them have played less than 500 games in their history (that's 50 seasons or less), and 3 of those 10 are in district 21-3A. #2 Rice, #3 North Carolina, #5 Arizona State, Louisville, UC-Irvine, and Mississippi State have all advanced to the College World Series... Defending champ Oregon St. leads 1-0 over Michigan and Cal State-Fullerton leads 1-0 over UCLA for the final two slots. -
Given that WO-S has lost a total of 6 games in 15 years (and only 7 in 30 years) against the other 7 teams combined, I would say they are the favorites until proven otherwise.

Oregon State, North Carolina, Rice, Cal State Fullerton and Clemson are all 2006 CWS participants arguably finishing 2006 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th respectively judging from their CWS performances (Oregon St, UNC, Rice and CSF were the 4 semifinalists last year and Clemson fell 6-7 to CSF in the round prior to the Semis)... and all are still alive looking to return this year. -

Works for me... I predict the district runnerup will advance further in the Division II playoffs than the district top seed. Unless something happens to Fitzhenry, whoever wins 21-3A will run into #1 Giddings in the 2nd round again.... and they should be even stronger than they were the past 2 seasons...

&bspHere's the all-time winning percentage chart.... Alex Durley holds the top spot only because of the 4 season minimum I have in place... If I hadn't put some sort of minimum time period there would have been dozens of coaches from 50+ years ago who had 1 or 2 really good seasons flooding the list.; The ACTUAL top 3 if I had not put a minimum in place are: #1 - 100% - Harold McRae - Nederland - 1945 - 10-0-0 #2 - 95.16% - Clyde Gott - Hull-Daisetta - '35-'37 - 29-1-1 #3 - 95.00% - Bill Stages - Hull-Daisetta - '38-'39 - 19-1-0 Does anyone know anything about McRae? It's odd that he'd come in for one season, get Nederland a perfect season (they won the regional championship that year which was as far as you could go in the lower classifications back then) and then left. It's kind of funny that I mentioned Gott and Stages in my very first post on this topic and they pop up at the top here. As I said earlier, Gott coached Hull-Daisetta to the first 22 games of what was eventually a 41 game winning streak (a national record at the time at the high school level) and Stages was at the helm for the final 19 games of the streak. Also, most people forget that Nederland didn't win their state championship until the year AFTER Bum Phillips left. Here's the other longevity variable that can be compared... all-time wins. Obviously there are a lot of the same names as listed above but a few big differences as well. Durley was only head coach for 9 seasons but makes the top 20 in total wins, and so far, has far and away the highest winning percentage of anyone I've gone through, followed by Don Price. Next I'll be putting together a comparison of winning percentage and then finally a comparison of who has the most hardware (i.e. district titles, state titles, etc.) Most All-Time Wins as Head Coach of a Varsity UIL Football Program in SE Texas -

I'm still contemplating... this topic has given me the opportunity to compile some coaching stats which I've been meaning to do for quite a while now.... here's what I have so far with much more to come... 4 of the top 8 listed are still active so according to the rules, they would not be eligible. Longevity - Coaches with at least 12 seasons as Head Coach over a Southeast Texas Program -
