  1. HJ over WOS would be the biggest upset of the past three decades. WO-S hasn't lost to a school with a smaller enrollment in the regular season since 1986
  2. Jasper would more than likely win 20-4A in my opinion as would WO-S. I think overall the district will be down this season. WO-S has either beaten the local 4A district champions or been the local 4A district champions 10 out of the past 11 years (with a 1 pt loss preventing it being 11 straight) so it would be pretty cool if Nederland does go on to win the district to keep the streak going! ;D 2007 Dayton 14, WO-S 22 2006 Dayton 9, WO-S 26 2005 Beaumont Central 12, WO-S 28 2004 Nederland 30, WO-S 32 2003 PN-G 20, WO-S 21 2002 Ozen 7, WO-S 6 2001 Pt Arthur Lincoln 8, WO-S 24 2000 WO-S (5-0-0 20-4A District Champs) 1999 PN-G 14, WO-S 21 1998 WO-S (7-0-0 20-4A District Champs) 1997 WO-S (7-0-0 20-4A District Champs)
  3. Maybe not recently, but in the earlier years ('96 and '99 were the most recent) Vidor was notorious for coming out of nowhere and upsetting WO-S. Only 2 teams have beaten WO-S 7 times in their 31 year history... TJ ...and Vidor Opponents Against Whom WO-S Has the Worst Showing Most games won vs. WO-S (only 14 have won more than once) 1. 7 - Port Arthur Jefferson (7-9-1) 2. 7 - Vidor (7-15-0) 3. 6 - Port Neches-Groves (6-17-0) 4. 6 - Nederland (6-23-0) 5. 5 - Beaumont West Brook (5-5-0) 6. 5 - Jasper (5-17-0) 7. 4 - Beaumont French (4-5-0) 8. 4 - Bay City (4-8-0) 9(t). 3 - La Marque (3-1-0) 9(t). 3 - Houston C.E. 5. Not sure... I don't think Massey has ever done a preseason rating before... usually he doesn't start ranking teams until 3-4 weeks in to the season

  7. Here's the link to the complete set of rankings from 1982-2005 West Brook was also ranked #15 at the end of their State Championship season in 1982 yet were only the 3rd highest ranked team from Texas that year. TJ was #12 despite losing in the first round of the playoffs. Click here --->USA Today Final High School Rankings
  8. To date... NO 4A Texas team has ranked as highly as the 1987 Mustangs did in the Final USA Today Nationwide Rankings since it was first published starting in 1982.... no La Marque team, no Stephenville team, no Ennis team
  9. My mom told me about it.... here's the original clipping that I have... is this what they had in the paper? We were still 5A then I'm the only Junior amongst a group of Seniors in the pic I came out of nowhere and kicked butt in Number Sense that year
  10. The entire 1987 Championship Game is now posted and accessible from the links above... 8)
  11. No... I haven't heard of the tape.... The first part of the 4th Quarter is now up on YouTube... if you don't check out any other part of the game... check out this clip starting at the 8:54 time point as there is a short interview with a VERY young Todd Dodge commenting. He was the Quarterback Coach for Rockwall at the time.
  12. Good luck against Navasota in their 1st playoff game this season.... ;D
  13. It would only be fair to post the 17-0 non-district win in 1998 against the same team if I were to do that...
  14. It IS a California based site... I didn't put it up there but another rather screwy ranking is that they have Southlake Carroll way down at #95
  15. They've expanded the number of teams ranked. Here are all the local programs to make the top 200. 16. Not quite... there were no State Championship games in the TCIL from 1990-1993 when Kelly won 2 of those titles. The "State Championship" those years was essentially the equivalent of a District Title as there were only 5 teams in TCIL 4A those years. The teams played a round-robin schedule against each other and the team with the best record in the 4A conference was declared "State Champs". Kelly won it in 1992 with a 4-0-0 conference record and were co-champs with Dallas Jesuit in 1993 (both with 3-1-0 conference records)

  20. I finally found my copy of the game that was televised... It's converted completely to DVD format and I'm in the process of converting it to a format that I can post... 21. Are you sure it's 1937 you're talking about?? Cuz Port Arthur won that game over Amarillo 33-0, beating the 3-time defending state champs for the first time in 28 games. October 1937
  22. All programs ever to qualify for the playoffs are ranked below by furthest playoff advancement. 23. The answer would be: PN-G (#21 below) with 6 state finals appearances... although some purists would argue PN-G was just Port Neches up until 1956 followed by: TJ (#30) with 5 Newton (#38) and WO-S (#52) with 4 each Burkeville (#69) and Nederland (#89) with 3 each not on the list below: Bridge City, Barbers Hill, Hull-Daisetta and Corrigan-Camden with 2 each West Brook, French, Hebert, Jasper, Crosby, Coldspring, High Island and old Beaumont High with 1 each The table below can be found in the Historical Forum of this site under the "Statewide Football Records" thread... along with tons more information All-Time State Championship Game Appearances Years in BOLD indicate Championships This includes 6-man, 8-man and 11-man football Ch=Total # of Championships Ru=Total # of times as runnerup
  24. This may open another whole can of worms but my parents had the choice of sending me to private or public school and there was no question that I would get the better education at WO-S back in the 1980's. I'm very proud to be an alumnus of the school and as the #1 graduate from the 1987 Class I feel I was more than prepared to enter the real world from the education I received there. In 1987 the superintendent may have been different but the vast majority of the administration was pretty much the same. Teachers were just as underpaid then as they are now. The football program was just as jealously regarded then by the academic departments (if not more so) than it is now. In my opinion the #1 reason WO-S has lost enrollment is plain old simple "white flight". As someone very astutely figured out several posts ago, the amount WO-S has lost in the past 20 years almost exactly equals the amount LC-M, OF and BC have gained over the same period. The City of Orange may have lost population but if you look at the actual US Census Population figures, Orange County has continuously INCREASED in population. The school had it's peak enrollment in its very first year (1977) and has steadily decreased in size ever since. With 4 school districts being so close geographically I imagine many of the old West Orange opponents to the merger gradually moved over to the BC and OF school districts while quite a bit of the remainder of the city (including all 3 of my siblings) moved up to Little Cypress. All sad, but true!
