  1. The actual city limits snake along most of the major roads leading away from the city like bicycle spokes so that would be an extremely confusing graphic. I will say that there are parts of the Orange or West Orange City limits that are in Bridge City ISD, LCM ISD, Orangefield ISD and of course WOCCISD. Here's the view showing the 4 closest high schools to Orange and the school district boundaries (blue lines)
  2. Looks like we've got dueling threads regarding the enrollment of WO-S These numbers are the official enrollments counting grades 9-12 in each of the respective high schools published by the TEA in their annual Standard Reports. The numbers differ slightly from the UIL enrollment numbers but they should be pretty close. The very highest enrollment WO-S ever had was back when it first opened in the late 1970's topping out in the 1400's. My sisters graduated in '79 and '81 with graduating classes in the upper 300's... my graduating class of '87 had 297 graduates. If you look at the chart above, the actual enrollment was actually pretty stable, only drifting downward 100 students between 1988 and 1999. There has been a plummet in enrollment since 2005, which I attribute to Rita... you'll notice the enrollment of all Orange county schools except for Orangefield (with an increase of only 8 students) have decreased since pre-Rita in 2004.
  3. I pulled this from a post I put up several months ago. You also have to realize that the WO-S enrollment has fluctuated up and down, with the enrollment actually being within 38 students of hitting 1000 as recently as 1999. I imagine our current low level is partially due to numbers dropping after Rita, and it's quite likely the numbers could increase in the 2010 alignment. Link to original post --->CLICK HERE These numbers are the official enrollments counting grades 9-12 in each of the respective high schools published by the TEA in their annual Standard Reports. The numbers differ slightly from the UIL enrollment numbers but they should be pretty close. 1991 was the first year ever that LC-M had a larger enrollment than WO-S 2006 was the first year ever that Bridge City had a larger enrollment than WO-S
  4. In 1984 WO-S had an enrollment of close to 1350 and the cutoff between 2A and 3A was 275 In 2008 WO-S has an enrollment of 691 and the cutoff between 2A and 3A is 430 If the enrollment numbers continue to drop as they have, and the cutoff between 2A and 3A continues to rise as it has it is definitely within the realm of possibility that WO-S could drop to 2A They're still 260 students above the cutoff but a little over 20 years ago they were over 1000 students above the cutoff!
  5. Here goes... ;D 1. West Brook 2. West Orange-Stark 3. Dayton 4. Port Neches-Groves 5. Nederland 6. Port Arthur Memorial 7. Jasper 8. Lumberton 9. Newton 10. Kirbyville
  6. The Golden Triangle is an area of extreme Southeast Texas near the Louisiana border. The "triangle" is formed by Beaumont, Port Arthur, and Orange, which are the largest cities in the area. The "golden" refers to the wealth that came from the Spindletop oil strike near Beaumont in 1901. In an attempt to distance the area from the petrochemical industry, some area interests attempted to rename the Golden Triangle the "Triplex." This name change did not catch on, and area residents still refer to it as the Golden Triangle. Some residents of the Golden Triangle do not refer to the Greater Houston area as being part of Southeast Texas and place the western boundary of the region roughly at the Trinity River. The area holds the annual South Texas State Fair in Beaumont. If I'm not mistaken, Dayton and BH is on the Western side of the Trinity. It's good to see that I'm not the only one that may have been baffled by this. In my opinion the "Golden Triangle" consists of Orange and Jefferson counties and that's being quite liberal I think... as schools such as Hamshire-Fannett, LC-M and Sabine Pass fall quite a bit outside the geographical "Triangle". My definition of Southeast Texas tends to go a bit further west to the Harris County line, which would thus include Dayton and Barbers Hill, as they are in Liberty and Chambers counties respectively.
  7. That makes no sense. What's the point of WO-S and Kirbyville playing if there's nothing at stake really?
  8. There's not a championship round? I thought the top 2 from each pool advanced and there was a playoff among the 4 teams.... WO-S had to play 5 games last year to win it
  9. Why on earth would the magazine have Liberty Hill ranked #1 in their preseason rankings, yet subsequently predict that they will lose in the State Finals to #4 ranked La Vega? Dave Campbell is contradicting himself

  15. For those interested, the very best "Inaugural Season" ever in Texas High School Football history belongs to Lubbock Estacado who fashioned a perfect 14-0-0 season in their very first year of varsity competition in 1968, winning the 3A State Championship in the process. In fact, they went 24-0-1 in their first 25 games before finally losing in the 1969 playoffs to eventual state champ Brownwood. And I have to mention that another Jefferson County team would be listed as #2 on the list. Hamshire-Fannett put together a 12-0-0 season in their first year of play in 1961 after the merger of the two schools. They didn't win a state title because they were playing in a lower classification that only allowed them to play 2 playoff games but it definitely is still worth mentioning.
  16. I put this together by request over on the 5A board but since the program that tops the list is one of our own I felt obliged to post over here as well.... only 6 of the 166 5A programs that have opened since 1950 were able to tally at least 8 wins in their first season of UIL varsity play and West Brook is the ONLY one of the bunch to notch more than 10 wins in their first season. It really puts in to perspective how amazing the '82 Bruins State Championship Team really was. I finally got around to doing this. I only have included the 166 programs that have opened since 1950 as the records going back before WWII are not 100% complete in regards to inaugural seasons. Amazingly, only 30 of the 166 current 5A programs to open in the past 58 years were able to put up a winning record in their very first season of UIL varsity district competition. My criteria for "inaugural season" is that a team had to have been eligible to make the playoffs, which entails being a full-fledged member of a UIL designated district. Most brand new schools have anywhere from a 1 to 3 year delay before they actually meet this criteria since the vast majority of new schools do not have a senior class their first year opening, consisting anywhere from only a 9th grade, to having 9th thru 11th grades, and thus playing mostly JV competition or only a partial varsity season. Keeping with the arrangement of the original post of the thread I have kept the programs divided up into their individual decades of opening and have ranked them by both decade and in the overall 166. Ranking was 1st by total number of wins and then 2nd by winning percentage (I went with wins over winning percentage simply because I feel Beaumont West Brook's 11-4-1 State Championship Season deserves to be ranked ahead of Brazoswood's 10-1-0 season which would rank first if using winning percentage as the first ranking criteria). Let me know if I inadvertently have an inaugural season listed that isn't really an inaugural season under the criteria I mentioned above and I will correct it. * - teams with an asterisk competed in either a private league or segregated league prior to joining the UIL and the data listed is only their first season competing in the UIL, not their actual first season ever
  17. If Sterling can get by Channelview and one other district opponent then WB will be going D2 as Sterling has a larger enrollment. I know it seems very unlikely since they haven't made the playoffs since 1985 but these next two seasons are probably their best chance in decades to actually make it. Also, WB would not have to worry about North Shore until the 4th round of the playoffs since they're in the same district, and even then, only if they both end up in D1.
  18. Everything I'm hearing here in Houston is that all of the Smiley students will be attending Forest Brook as the district just spent a couple of million dollars renovating the Forest Brook campus.
  19. Thanks.... 20-4A now up but still need Livingston's non-district games and also need where Central's games with PAM and Galveston will be played as well as where the Livingston-Central game is going to be.
  20. I'll add them in as I get them done.... Here's the only ones I've completed so far... 20-4A 21-3A
  21. PN-G fell to #2 in SE Texas on this one but very nice showing nonetheless! (and they're still #1 among schools that currently exist in SE Texas... ;D) State Championship years listed in BLUE Years finishing as a State Finalist are listed in RED Ch = Total # of State Championships won Ru = Total # of times losing in the State Finals Sm = Total # of times losing in the State Semifinals All-Time State Semifinal Appearances (aka All-Time Region Championships)
  22. Here's my useless trivia for the week... the 97 schools that have played in 3 U.I.L. State Championship games or more (this includes 6-man, 8-man and 11-man football from 1920-2007). Southeast Texas makes a fair showing with 6 teams making the list. Years in BOLD indicate championships Ch = Total # of Championships won Ru = Total # of times as Runnerup

Still.. 3-6 isn't much better... especially considering that the area went 9-2-2 in title games from 1971-1987. That's almost averaging one appearance in the state finals per year for SE Texas (13 times in 17 years)
  24. We've won 25 consecutive regular season games against sub-4A opponents and we're 31-1 all-time with the 2 pt loss to Jasper in '04 being the only loss. Since dropping to 3A WO-S has gone 41-7-0 including going 10-2 against 4A opponents and 31-5 against 3A opponents Both 4A losses came at the hands of Bay City The 5 3A losses came at the hands of '05 State Champ Wimberley, '04 State Finalist Jasper, '06 Quarterfinalist Giddings, '07 Quarterfinalist Waco La Vega, and '04 Region Semifinalist Huffman. .
