I AGREE IT SHOULD BE A GOOD ONE -
COLLEGE STATION - Dominique Bailey and Kwame Spikes thought these days would never come. As 4-year-olds playing backyard football in the shadows of the East Texas timberlands, they dreamed about playing together on the Jasper varsity football team as quarterback and wide receiver. That dream became reality last season - Bailey the quarterback and Spikes the receiver - but few days were as enjoyable as Thursday. Much like they did during so many of those backyard games, Bailey and Spikes connected with each other for several touchdowns in the 7-on-7 football state tournament at Texas A&M University's Penberthy Field. In the process, they helped Jasper become the only Southeast Texas squad to keep alive its championship hopes in the tournament's 32-team small schools division. The Bulldogs will face Navasota at 8:30 a.m. today in the second round. The championship is noon at Kyle Field. Jasper must win three games to reach the final. "We talked all the time about playing together," recalled Spikes, a 5-foot-7 senior who caught nine of the 14 touchdown passes thrown by Bailey - his first cousin - in the last two of Jasper's four 40-minute games Thursday. "We thought the day would never come." Jasper's last two games, one a 41-20 victory against Kirbyville and the other a 56-26 victory against Iraan, looked a lot sharper than the Bulldogs' first two contests. They lost their first 26-14 against Bandera and won the second 28-27 against Brownwood. Much of that turnaround came thanks to Bailey's improved play, as the wobbly passes that got intercepted in the first game were replaced by tight spirals in the last two games. A handful of those passes went for more than 30 yards to Spikes in the end zone. "I think he started relaxing and feeling more comfortable and not feeling the pressure," said Jasper coach Thomas Brooks, who - like most coaches - watched his team from beyond the end zone, as University Interscholastic Rules prohibit coaches from having contact with players in game settings before practices begin Aug. 4. "I've told him, 'If you're going to be in the playoffs, you have to be able to handle pressure, so you have to relax and just play football.'" Bailey, considered a running-style quarterback, said he felt comfortable after the first game. "I was throwing against the wind, so I was nervous," Bailey said of the first game. "I'm over it now." Jasper was one of three Southeast Texas teams in the tournament. The others, Kirbyville and Hardin, lost overtime games in the first round of bracket play. All told, Hardin won once in four games and Kirbyville won none of four games. Also playing today is West Brook. The Bruins are in the 64-team big schools division and will play three games beginning at 1 p.m. Although the games resemble touch football more than the full contact, 11-on-11 version, Brooks said there is significance in winning at this tournament. "We want to compete, and anything we're competing in and they're keeping score, we want to win," Brooks said. "That's what we try to get them used to - winning - in anything we do, no matter what. That's the goal."

The Jasper Bulldogs has been playing good summer ball this summer also, I have witness Spikes go for 41 points and BAILEY 31 POINTS and both players are playing summer games against each other. Its sad to see these two young players get out of 21-3a and go to 18-3a this season, but if you haven't seen these two guards play, u missing out on a show. -

With the speed and Depth that I noticed on both side of the ball for the Jasper Bulldogs, I watched some good receivers at The TCU camp this weekend from different classification, and alot of coaches was very impressed with Jasper Receivers Spikes and Bronson(Yeah this is Malcolm Lil Brother). I will have to copy Coop and Say Jasper by a small margin. -
Congrats Malcolm. Now j_dog, I think stating he has world class speed is a bit over the top, don't you think? He has great speed, not world class. Now we will never know will we? He did not run track. But some of his relatives who did run track were world class, without question. A cousin, and an uncle were on the first hs 400m relay to go under 40 seconds (hand held). And that national record lasted for six years. And the cousin ran in the Atlanta Olympics in the hurdles. I have watched Malcolm run bases for three years. And I have seen him do some amazing things. Just an opinion true, but no, I really do not think it is over the top. But perhaps you are right. He is still a winner. I never questioned him being a winner or not or his athletic ability. Obviously our opinions on "world class" are different. Also, yes I know what his relatives did, but that doesn't make him have world class speed. I have seen him on the football and baseball fields, he is very fast. But only the rare few have world class speed, I don't consider him to be one. What this whole conversation boils down too, is that this kid made it to the next level. With whatever speed and smarts he has, it shows that he love the game. Congrats Malcolm ,I wish you luck

I feel like the Westbrook Bruins, WestOrange Stark Mustangs. Newton Eagles and The Jasper Bulldogs will put out the most Scholarships this year.

With all the hype this year about highschool football in which I am a big fan, what high school team in the surrounding area of Texas, do you feel will get the most scholarship offers to their players this year.

DOMINIQUE BAILEY JASPER BULLDOGS -
I was very impressed with what Coach Brooks and the coaching staff has been doing with the Jasper Bulldogs, from what I noticed I observed that the throwing skills of Dominque Bailey will improve with time, and the receivers will be better than before, I observed the speed of all the receivers(Kwame Spikes, Ryan Bronson, John Hadnot, Darrin Beavers, De Anthony Limberick, and William Ellis). Defense will return the big Linebackers of Dan ta Rollins and AJ Bronson. With a little more playing time, it will improve on the overall performance when dealing with man to man situations for the linebackers. A little tweaking in the secondary by moving some players around will be very impressive in the state tournament in Texas A&M IN July. I also noticed that when Jasper played Silsbee in the 7 on 7 , it bought back memories between the two quarterbacks, both players has the arms to get the ball to the receivers and you know they both can run, but in this situation, they could only work on the pocket presence and making quick decisions in 4 seconds. I really enjoyed these seven on seven series and with a little more practice Jasper will be ready to contend in seven on seven and when week 0 opens up against The Gilmer Bulldogs In Tyler Texas August 28. KEEP UP THE HARD WORK TO ALL THE PLAYERS.

I went to the 7 on 7 in Hardin and I was very impressed with the way seven on seven was handled. For one, I'm not a huge fan on the seven on seven rules, because it is nothing like the real game, but I do see what and how this help the kids get ready for the real thing. It gives the corners, safeties and linebackers more time to practice on the man and man coverage in certain situations. What is your opinion? Is it great conditioning tool for the players that are playing and what teams are you impressed with?
