  1. again I'm not confused. Renters don't get to deduct property taxes like homeowners so that's an additional burden. Cry me a river. You don't want to acknowledge that people who rent have a valid say in how taxes are spent. And that's B.S.
  2. I pay taxes. I'm not confused. If you rent you are paying property tax through rent. I jumped cardinalbacker because he wants to make it seem like renters don't have skin in the game. They do. If you live in the community you are supporting the community in various ways through taxation.
  3. Yea that's a pretty terrible problem. These things are intertwined. I know the good people on the ground trying to knock sense in these knuckleheads. Its an on going process.
  4. Rent goes up every year so that is a burden. Part of the reason rent goes up is property taxes go up. So they pay taxes. As for subsidized housing that is a minority of the available housing in the area. They don't live there for free. They are tax payers. They buy items in the community. They have just as much say in how the community educates the children as home owners. Please put down your dog whistle. White people also live in public housing. As far as businesses are concerned if they paid a little more tax and paid a little more of the profits to their employees instead of the CEO the community would be in better shape. Because businesses fight valuation tooth and nail homeowner are now paying more than they have in history as a percentage. Be a man of the people, don't fight for the man.
  5. People who rent pay taxes. The landlord passes the property tax increases as rent increases every year. Lets end the myth that only homeowners have skin in the game and they are a special class of citizens that deserve extra credit.
  6. We'll just have to agree to disagree. I asked friends and family that still live in Orange and they say nothing's changed. It may be worse thanks to social media. And by the way a confederate memorial on MLK is a big problem. Its a middle finger to the black community. There's no explaining that one away. Or the poll that showed a lot of support for that despicable POS.
  7. Winner of this game is going to Arlington. Good luck Memorial.
  8. I didn't call anyone a racist in my previous post. I stated that just because a commenter didn't see the problem doesn't mean its not there. And if you're not willing to acknowledge that there may be a problem you're being naive or just wilfully ignorant and you might want to open your eyes a bit. But since you wanna come out in the open... I've seen your posts on this site. You dog whistle with the best. So I don't think you're the best person to say that there's not a problem with racism in the golden triangle. If you notice on this site and on ESPN most of the people who said that racism was a problem in Orange and the article had a point are persons of color. All those upset about how Orange was portrayed are white. You don't find that strange? (Rhetorical question of course the comments were going to come out that way) I'm pretty sure you can find a token friend who may agree with your point. However the subject of the article agrees with mine point of view and stated so in the article. I'm from Orange and love it because I'm from Orange but that doesn't mean I'm defending it when its wrong. Only white people can end systemic racism. If it bothers you so much to hear that there's racism in the place you live, then condemn and correct your friends neighbors coworkers etc that espouse or enforce such a system. And remember just because you don't wear a hood, say the n-word, have a black friend, or date a black person doesn't mean you aren't racially biased. Have a nice evening.
  9. You are exactly why the the article was written. Thanks for validating the article.
  10. I know you think you mean well but you miss the point. Your response shows you haven't started to look within yourself.
  11. While that's a nice post its not the real story. It may have been that way for you but it's not that way for about half of the people who live in town or grew up there like me. There are problems that remain unsolved and are only put aside for 4 hours a few Fridays in the fall. While you may see the confederate monument as an aberration, others see it as an affirmation of what we already know and even more a slap in the face since it was built on MLK. That garbage pile wasn't the start it just the icing on the cake. The one thing I'm grateful for is learning how to navigate in a racist society. I don't have very fond memories of school due to the discrimination by teachers and students. Had a few classmates that were proud to be klansmen for what its worth. The article may be harsh but what ET3 said was harsh too. Maybe instead of being so defensive it might be time for soul searching. BTW this story could have been written about the whole area.
  12. Good luck Memorial. I hope y'all get the revenge you seek next week!
  13. It wasn't the most nuanced article but its not far off the mark. But then again you could take Beaumont and Port Arthur and say similar things, except the racist comments come from those that live just outside the city limits. Just because you don't like the messenger doesn't mean he wrong. You can find evidence that the article bears truth by reading some of the comments on this site. Take the Central Ozen thread regarding the possible merger of the schools. I can tell who's white and who's black just by the comments. No one says such vile things about PNG Nederland Lumberton, etc. Yet its open season. On Ozen central and memorial. The only reason why WOS gets a pass because none of the usual suspects can beat them. That's a sad state of affairs. If I never left the area I'd probably be more defensive about it. But the years away have opened my eyes a bit. Still love home, I'll always claim it but I'll never move back.
  14. If you want to keep up with houston basketball download the amazing 102.5 app and listen to the chop shop at noon Monday through Thursday
  15. This is gonna be a fun tournament in a fun spot. I just wish my 2018 2019 squad was playing instead of this version of Livingston. They would stand a better chance.
  16. Memorial has done well. District is supposed to prepare you for the playoffs. The team they lost to last year - Temple- played in the state championship game. Memorial would have been in Dallas if not for that loss. As for WOS they didn't immediately dominate when they moved to 3A. They're good teams all around. It took another drop in size and a really special class to get the three now four year run they're on. If anything Memorial will be in better shape following the split as they'll play up to the competition they'll face in the playoffs. Playing Lumberton, Ozen, Livingston and Central doesn't do the Titans any favors. (Not a knock on those schools they're basically 4A and PAM is darn near 6A. I'm pretty sure memorial JV could beat those teams varsity on any given Friday) Its more like glorified scrimmages and bad habits can be formed playing down a level. Instead of worrying about one loss appreciate what you have and cheer them on.

  18. If they had the whole team it would have been a closer game. My LCM contacts said the team was really banged up. Kilgore was a better team but not seven TDs. That said, that was severe coaching malpractice. I understand why the kids got frustrated, coach had them playing to minimize the damage instead of trying to get back in the game. Oh well at least they're good in basketball. Maybe y'all can get revenge in February.
  19. That was a rough game. Kilgore was really fast. My hat off to them. The one thing I don't understand is why LCM huddled after every play when they were down 28-0 during their first possession of the third quarter. They used nearly 8 minutes of the clock and turned the ball over. Their coach didn't give them a chance to get back in the game. You're down that much it has to be no huddle with a choice of two plays. It was super frustrating. They weren't gonna win the game but they could have made it interesting with better coaching.
  20. When the incident happened no one would have believed her. In today's climate people have finally had enough of the abuse and are speaking out. I wish that she had not experienced what she did but I also wish she felt she could have expressed the outrage back then. I for one believe her. As I was listening to the radio this morning people who know her and Roy Moore were calling in to confirm these allegations. Shame on Moore.
  21. That would be a great move for Texas. Hope this happens. He'd be very supportive of Herman as DKR was to him.
  22. Big Red travels to Houston to take on the HBU Huskies. This year has been a disappointment. This is probably the last chance to get a conference win. LU ain't beating McNeese next weekend. At this point I would take being competitive as a consolation prize. Sadly the Cards are being outcoached and possibly out athleted this year.
  23. Unfortunately the newspaper industry is a little lost these days especially with the internet. The main purpose of the paper is to sell ads not inform. If no one buys the paper then there's less ads. Its a vicious cycle. I still buy newspapers because I used to work at one and understand the dedication it takes to put up a good article. I was severely underpaid in relation to what I produced but I have experienced things that the people who replaced me may never experience unless they leave to a bigger market or join a the NFL MLB NBA websites. The Beaumont Enterprise used to cover the Texans Rockets Astros Cowboys Longhorn and Aggies while still looking out for the local team. But they had a staff of 5-6 writers not including editors. They'll never do it again. They print the Enterprise in Houston now. The day will come when all writing is outsourced to the chronicle and you won't have any local writers. That will be a sad day. The chronicle today looks like the enterprise did 20 years ago. That's an acceptable size paper for an area like Beaumont but not for Houston. Newspapers are shrinking everywhere
  24. That sucks. In the state of the district for 2016 2017 the enrollment was 1176 between the two high schools. They have sent the parents letters stating the district is full and warning those who live out of district they can be fined. District ain't full. Intermediate and Jr high are in high school buildings. Unless they were able to kick out a bunch of kids they're staying 5a and probably limp along until the big elementary classes move up.
  25. I haven't lived in the golden triangle in almost two decades so I don't know what a moody bojo is. Probably a good thing. I know a few people that play on the team and I'm glad they're playing well. I just don't count it as a sure thing until its done.
