Coach Finney turned the Maud program around when he was there. Coach Finney had a record of 38-11 in 4 seasons at Maud, also two of his players from that team went on to start at TCU. Coach Finney has an average of 9-3 in last 5 years as Head Coach, 45-15 overall. Sounds like Coach Finney's great program and H-D's pride/tradition will be a great mix. My brother will be playing for him this year at 6'4 215lb/Sophomore, my son will be playing 7th grade this year 5'8 220lbs.
HD Bobcat55 your insane. I can almost see your argument that HD has had better teams in the past, but more athletes? There is no way. As a 4 then a 3a we've had way more athletes than HD, I can honestly say there is more athletes on the 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 panther teams than in HD's history, with Ryan Melton 6ft6 260 D1 Commited to Texas State, 6ft o linemen Jon Lacefield Commited to Texas Lutheran, 6ft6 219 pound qb Daniel fitzwater, 6ft3 sophomore WR Aaron Mosley, 6ft4 TE Jake Vaught ( offers at the next level but may take an academic route) Jordan Jones(no need to tell you about him you should already know) 300 pound d tackle Omar tebo went to state in powerlifting in the highest weight class, a lot of talent here at liberty whether or not Huffman and Cleveland want to acknowledge that is their own problem because if Deel can get these guys together they will be dangerous, also Dionte Robinson has speed like no other he would our run Chisholm Marberry with boots on, and unlike you I have seen all of these guys play as well as all of the 2010-2011 Bobcats.
H-D top players vs Liberty top players. Hands down H-D would win! Remember I'm talking All-Time top players. Not just since 2000. The Top 25 H-D Bobcat Football Players of All Time IMO Revised: 1. Ross Echols(Texas), 2. Gene Walker, 3. Parnell Lykes, 4. George Westbrook, 5. Anthony Landry(Army), 6. Ed Taylor(Baylor), 7. Joe Allen Slack, 8. Juan Gamez(Ranger), 9. Stepheleon Whitfield, 10. Tony Thibedeaux, 11. Robert Tanner, 12. David Cooper, 13. Arnell Lykes, 14. Larry Eaglin(Houston Oilers), 15. Jim Arceneaux(Sam Houston), 16. Ahmad Lambert, 17. T.J. Walker, 18. Thomas Rodgers(UTEP), 19. Eric Redfern, 20. Sedric Broussard, 21. Ashante Allen(Cisco), 22. Stevie Broussard, 23. Kenneth Winters(SFA), 24. Johnny Downs, 25. Brandon Broom(SFA) Don't know where they all went to college.
Well from what this guy is saying, congratulations HD on a great hire. They may not be very talented, they may not have many athletes, they may have never been able to beat Liberty ;), but I can say that the football players in HD always seem to have great work ethic when it comes to the game, the only aspect of HD that I wish Liberty had is that work ethic, not so much this last season but in general at least they have that.
H-D as a 2A, then as a 1A, has had way more talented athletes, than Liberty as a 3A. And thanks for the work ethic comment. :D

You have any info on Josh Finney?
Greetings from northeast Tx. as you can see this is the first time I have posted. I just wanted you Bobcat fans to realize how fortunate you are to have Coach Finney. He took what was called "the worst job" in coaching and made that program a powerhouse in 1A. Maud was the laughinstock of Northeast Tx football, winning 5 games in 4 years (one of those a forfeit) and procceeded to compile a 38-11 record reaching the state quarterfinals and state sem-finals, four district championships (lost 1 district game in four years!!). The off season/summer workouts will develop athletes, not just football players, in that same time span the baseball team captured 2 district championships and went deep in the playoffs every year, basketball made the playoffs for the first time in many years and the track team won two district championships, two area championships and sent two to state, powerlifting teams also were started and did great...and don't worry about the girls side either, he expects the same hard work on their side...the softball team made it to the state tourn. won district twice and girls track excelled. He believes in hard work and demands it from the coaches and athletes...if they will buy in to his program and work HD will be very sucessful again. He also turned around a Teague program that had gone 2-8 to 7-3 and made the playoffs...he and the supe didn't see eye to eye so he went to Mesquite Potteet...the years after Coach Finney left, Maud has returned to below average and Teague did the same thing...both teams NOT making the playoffs after he left. BUT the best thing about Coach is the kids will absolutely love him!! And he wil develop young men of character, not just great athletes!! You guys should be getting extremely excited down there!!! My son was fortunate enough to have him for his coach and that was one of the main reasons that he is playing college ball now. Best of luck to the Bobcats and Coach Finney!!
Great post!! I am fired up to have this Coach after hearing all this. H-D had about 30 players last year. But we also had about 12-15 boys that would not play for the old Coaching staff. The genetics are still in H-D, along with pride and tradition. Just need to put it all together. I hope Coach Finney realizes the history of H-D football.
No clue.
WOSgrad, what offense was Coach Hodges running? It really has to do with the fact that the offense Hodges runs simply was not compatable with the type of athletes at WO-S. Nothing against Coach Hodges, it is just you realize sometimes a bit too late that styles don't fit.

So I looked at the list of applicants for this job, there are some really good coaches on that list. My question is this, what if the decision makers hire a guy that some of you guys have not heard of, or thought of? What kind of support does he get?
I work in Safety Management, when we hire, we base it off of the persons resume. The resume shows the applicants experience, as well as the certifications the applicant has. After finding a well qualified and experienced applicant, we bring that person in for an interview. In that interview you will see if the applicants resume is just blowing smoke, or that he is the real deal. Family and friends should never be hired, it just don't work. (Drama). As a Manager I would always interview the best qualified person, especially one with a proven track record. If I didn't, I would be short changing my company and myself. So... for the H-D hiring committee to NOT interview Stan Hodges, because one of our principles was not best friends with him back in the late 90's, when Coach Hodges was at H-D, is down right crazy. Stan Hodges is probably the most qualified Coach on the list. He won a State Championship with Judson in 2002, coached in 34 playoff games(4 State Semi-Finals games), and turned the Kountze program around when there. Most of the committee is said to live outside of the District, along with the Superintendent. POLITICS!! Furthermore, what small school with pride and tradition, does not grant an interview to an alumnus that is a good Coach? Randy Birdwell went to H-D from K-12 and was a Beta Club member and one heck of a H-D football player, he has been Coaching in Anahauc for years and he does NOT get an interview. WOW!! Do the right thing, do the best you can and show people you care. NO BROTHER INLAW STUFF!!!!!!

Devers kids have their pick of H-D or Liberty. We have a good number of Devers kids.
First - NEVER GONNA HAPPEN - as Hardin and HD have too much pride. From a pure financial position HD really does need to merge with either Hardin or Liberty as their tax base has just about disappeared. TexasMinuteman - hope you were joking as neiter HD or Hardin has been a "dominate" program lately - Hardin had 2 or so years in football but lately will the record speak for itself.
H-D ISD does well for itself, the towns of Hull, Daisetta and Raywood combine to be ok. Also having an ExxonMobil pipeline/storage facility in Daisetta helps. As far as being dominate in football, even with H-D being down the last 5 years or so, we still have been just as productive or better than Liberty.

Brandon Kidd, Kevin Hathaway and Michael Broussard would all three be great. -
I realize choosing 6 applicants out of 57 is tough. But I can't understand why you would not grant, a former H-D defensive coach with a State Championship under his belt an interview. Also a H-D alumnus was not granted an interview. Coaches Stan Hodges from WOS and Randall Birdwell from Anahauc were not given interviews. WOW! I was Coached at H-D by Stan Hodges, what a passionate man! I played football at HD with Coach Randy Birdwell, great man. Both these men know first hand the pride and tradition at H-D. No other person on that list to my knowledge, has a State Championship, only Coach Hodges. Randy Birdwell to my knowledge, was the only H-D alumnus on that list. That respect alone and the good job he has done at Anahauc, should have got him an interview.

[Hidden Content] Coach Stan Hodges was my defensive coordinator when I played at H-D. Randy Birdwell played with me for 2 seasons. Both are good men, good luck. -
At this moment in time, and for the last 4 years, H-D could not beat Liberty. Although, during my generation H-D could have played with and beat Liberty several seasons. ;)

Hull-Daisetta list of applicants
H-D BOBCAT 55 replied to AggiesAreWe's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Man... alot of applicants. I played ball at H-D with Randall (Randy) Birdwell, Stan Hodges was my Defensive Coordinator and Coach Allen was our Offensive Coordinator. If it's the same Coach Trey Allen. All three are good men and Coaches. I hope one of them gets the job. WOSGrad do you see any popular names on the list, that stand out to you? -

Liberty vs HD rivalry ended with 6 straight Panther victories, 4 were while Liberty and HD were in the same district then Liberty began to grow all the way to 4A before going back down to 3, HD Bobcat won't say it but that's where HD's dominance over Liberty ended, and that was in the 50's, those solid 1A playoff teams HD put together in the 70's and 80's couldn't beat Liberty's 70's and 80's 3a and 4a teams.
LOL. Don't get carried away my friend. H-D had better teams hands down, in the 70's, 80's and 90's. Look at Liberty now, it takes former H-D Bobcats to make Liberty sports run. Terry Don Fregia, Todd Fregia, and Joe Allen Slack. All three people are former H-D Bobcat players, now their kids play for Liberty. If H-D could retain their former players in the community, we would be even better in sports.
