Trade for Astros' Scott still makes sense Lynn Henning / The Detroit New Jim McIsaac/Getty Images Luke Scott had 72 hits including 10 homers and 19 doubles in 214 at-bats for the Astros last season for a batting average of .336. Burning questions as the Tigers prepare to quiet down during Christmas and, perhaps, polish their roster in the days after New Year's: Q. Are the Tigers done dealing, drafting, buying and otherwise tweaking their team ahead of spring training? A. Plan on one more move. A left-hand hitting outfielder is coming soon to a Comerica Park clubhouse near you. The Tigers might yet deal for Luke Scott, the 28-year-old outfielder they apparently chased hard at last week's Winter Meetings. The Astros have undergone some turbulence since then (losing Andy Pettite, trading for Jason Jennings) and could yet lose Roger Clemens. It makes sense that they will try to improve in various ways that the Tigers could facilitate

KRIV-TV, citing Major League Baseball sources, reported Friday morning that the outfielder had agreed to a six-year contract worth an unspecified amount of money and would be flying to Houston from Panama on Friday evening to sign the contract. Houston general manager Tim Purpura was not immediately available for comment. Pacers Jackson arraigned in Mich. on probation violation charge By RON VAMPLE, Associated Press Writer November 13, 2006 ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. (AP) -- Indiana Pacers guard Stephen Jackson pleaded not guilty to a probation violation charge on Monday. Michigan prosecutors said Jackson violated his probation after being accused of firing a gun outside a strip club in Indiana last month. Jackson, who appeared Monday for arraignment in district court, could face up to three months in jail if found guilty of violating the terms of his probation. His next court appearance in Michigan is scheduled for Jan. 26. Jackson was serving probation after pleading no contest to misdemeanor assault and battery charges in September 2005 for his role in a 2004 brawl between Pacers players and fans at The Palace of Auburn Hills. He is charged in Indiana with criminal recklessness -- a felony -- and misdemeanor counts of battery and disorderly conduct. "Feeling good. Feeling good," Jackson said after his brief court appearance north of Detroit. "Just ready to get a workout in and get ready for our next game. That's my whole point: just getting back to basketball." Police said Jackson fired a gun in the air at least five times during an Oct. 6 fight outside Club Rio. Jackson originally told police that he fired the gun in self-defense, but Marion County (Ind.) Prosecutor Carl Brizzi said Jackson retrieved his gun from his car and fired it before he was struck and injured by another car. Defense attorney James Burdick said Jackson had fully completed the terms of his 12-month probation earlier this year and therefore was not on probation at the time of his arrest in Indianapolis. "Stephen Jackson pleaded not guilty, because he is not guilty," Burdick said outside court. "He is doing great. He's a great guy who loves Indiana, loves the team, loves playing for the people of Indiana." His trial is scheduled to start Jan. 8 in Indianapolis. The criminal recklessness charge carries a prison term of six months to three years.

Tigers Acquire Gary Sheffield Jon Heyman reports that the Tigers have acquired Gary Sheffield for Humberto Sanchez and two Class A pitchers. It's a great deal for New York at first glance, as Sanchez has great stuff and profiles as at least a middle-rotation starter for years to come. Baseball Prospectus's Kevin Goldstein ranked Sanchez as the 11th best right-handed starting prospect in the game, holding him back only because of elbow concerns. The Yankees should have young guys comprising 60% of their rotation by the end of '07.

Benoit Vs Chavo-US Title Match At Survivor Series, Chris Benoit will defend the United States Championship against a man he considered a good friend until recently – Chavo Guerrero. It was just this past April that Chavo and Benoit, along with Rey Mysterio, inducted the late Eddie Guerrero into the WWE Hall of Fame. But late this summer, Chavo took a turn to the evil side, costing Mysterio the World Heavyweight Championship. Chavo then began a rivalry with Mysterio, claiming Rey was making his career off being a Guerrero despite not being one. Vickie Guerrero, Eddie’s widow, joined Chavo in the crusade, which ended with Chavo putting Rey out of action following a brutal I Quit Match on SmackDown. Enter Benoit. The week after Chavo defeated Rey, he and Vickie stood in the ring gloating about making Mysterio quit. The United States Champion, who had been ignored by the Guerreros earlier in the night, came looking for some answers as to why their attitudes had changed; unfortunately for him, Benoit was once again ignored. The following week, Rey made one last appearance on SmackDown before his knee surgery. Once again, Chavo and Vickie came out to taunt Rey, and Chavo viciously attacked Mysterio’s injured knee. Benoit rushed to Rey’s aid, chasing off the opportunistic Guerreros and preventing too much further damage. All Benoit wants is an answer; at Survivor Series, he will have the chance to beat it out of Chavo. Will the Rabid Wolverine get what he wants from the third-generation Superstar, or will another Guerrero’s name be etched into United States Championship history? Check back tomorrow at 3 p.m. ET for the announcement of another Survivor Series match.
