Select Softball Conflict with School Sports
hawkdad replied to Armchair Quarterback's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Girls select softball has really changed over the years. There are so many new college programs that have just started and/or young programs trying to become winners. They are recruiting hard to find those players to help their program. Texas is the 2nd most recruited state for college coaches.(California is #1) The girls playing select softball know this. They also know that some tournaments have as many as 75 to 100 college coaches or scouts in attendance. There may be as many as 10 to 15 colleges watching a single game. These colleges will include UT's, Texas A&M, LSU and every school down to the smallest JUCO. That is a big deal to any kid trying to play at the next level. And the kids also know that recruiting is seasonal. If they miss a tournament they could have missed the golden opportunity. The kids put in alot of work and the parents do put in alot of money to help them reach their goals. Bottom line is this is not just some summer league. Now, I realize the school wants to impose certain requirements to ensure athletes do the right things for their high school sports. One of those requirements is show up to practice. I do understand and appreciate that as well. I just think this rule of missing practice constitutes missing the whole season is way out of line and I think that is the thing that has people wondering what he is trying to accomplish making the punishment so severe. There is an obvious disconnect here. I could see this really hurting the schools volleyball and softball programs (unless you want all you athletes playing only one sport) Maybe both sides can get together and talk this out. The AD may not know what he doesn't know and vice versa for the parents and athletes. I truely believe this can be resolved. But if he does decide to stand by this decision he better be ready to enforce it on all sports and all players because people will be watching. Sorry, wrote this before the 100 word max was enforced. -
Thanks so much for everyones concern. Katy is doing just fine. They diagnosed her with heat exhaustion and held her at the hospital for about 2 hours giving her IV's and running test until they were able to release her. Other than being tired and weak she seemed to be somewhat normal by 8pm. I would like to thank all the nice people that came over to assist us with Katy when this happened. There is no doubt they helped speed her recovery time up tremendously. I am just sorry we were not able to thank everyone personally before we left the fields. It's times like Sunday that makes you feel good to be a part of the Southeast Texas Softball Family. Thanks again to everyone.

Shannon Sain G.T. Shocker Gold player committs to Blinn JC
hawkdad replied to trout's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Congrats Shannon and good luck at Blinn. Everyone in the GTShocker Family is very proud of you. Your desire for the game is unmatched. It is such a pleasure being around you at the ballpark, but it is especially entertaining riding in the same car with you to and from tournaments. It's like Comedy Central on wheels. It must feel great being able to go to the college of your choice. Not often does this actually happen. But you definitely deserve it. Congrats to Mike and Tammy for raising such a fine young lady. She is loved, admired and respected by us all. -

If you choose to push that issue then knock yourself out. I also agree with Slam that the Coaches should do something about the number of players given spots on the All District Team. Coaches are the ones that have "ALL" the control over the selections. If in fact a parent has enough control over any coach to sway them to vote for their kid then I have a problem with the coach's integrity. That kinda stuff should have ended with Little Dribblers. I do have a question for the coaches. Can you vote for kids off your own team to make all district? I have been a coach in several different sports where you could not vote for your own kids. I'm also wondering if the voting process is standardized or if the process is determined by each individual district. And picnroll, your post was a lecture to parents about being real with our kids. Are you talking about the parents that voted. Well, there were none. Are you talking about the parents that swayed a coach to vote a certain way. Give me a break. If you want to preach to someone start with the ones doing the voting. They have "ALL" the control..
No what Im talking about shack is parents who cannot accept the selections of the coaches and then get on here and raise all kinds of heck about the picks. Thats why there are co this and co that. Like I said give everybody a trophy mentality is all around us because nobody can accept losing. Just look at all the playoffs and how they have been watered down.Dont kid yourself about who is in control in our schools, it sure isnt coaches and teachers.First Team Second Team all we need.
If that is true then it's a shame. That I agree with.
