I am wondering? At 58 is he too old? He will be 60 by our first game.....I still would like to see what a 30-35 year old OC or DC could do....How old was Ray Alborn when he came in? Nice guy, funny guy, but he was washed up when he came to Lamar....I know I have been negative in the past, but if we are going to have it, I really would like a winning program. Think how long we had a poor basketball team before Coach Roc?

If we are looking to restoring football to change our perception, we are in pretty sad shape..... Look folks, I am not against football, I am against doing it on the backs on the student body with an additional tuition "fee." If we really want football, let those who want it, pay for it, not the kids, most of whom are working to put their way through college, or they are dependent upon Mom and Dad for tuition, many of which who are working to put their kids through school. Oh puhlease...with a puuuuuuh. We are talking less than $40 a month during school months , $9 a week, or $1.15 a day. How much is a big mac meal? I'll tell you what, that is another $1200-1300 to add to tuition over 4 years, and trust me, tuition prices have shot up like mad over the last 10 years, I know, I have been writing the dang-gum checks. To me, $1200 ain't small potatoes. Maybe YOU can afford it, it is to the point if you have 3-4-5 kids, you just can't afford a college education. And do not preach to me about not having kids, that's really none of your business. Am I tight with a dollar? Yes, I am. I can't see spending $1200 for a GAME. BTW: That same $40 a month could get me an improved health insurance policy at my work. That $40 a month would sure help at Christmas, that $40 would let me take my wife out to a nice restaurant and a movie.

I know I am the minority here, and I know the University Board is going to approve football, but I spent hours in Cardinal Stadium, in the heat, the cold, the rain, heck, I remember sitting in a tropical storm for one game and there was no one there, NO ONE. I just see the money spent better someplace else on campus. Aw heck, it is going to probably be academic for me anyway, I retire in two years and plan to move to the farm in Northeast Texas. The only time I will have any contact with the team will be if I read about it in the Mt Pleasant paper..... Man, I wish I was as close to retirement. Congratulations!!!! With my three kids 14, 13 and 12. I'll be paying tuition for several years to come. Wonder where my children will be attending college? ;D I am guessing LU....I went there, as did my wife, mother, brother, kids....Good school.....

It's football man! Yes, I remember the 70s and 80s and the empty seats at Lamar. By 2012, the seats will be empty once again.... You are an idiot. Who cares if the stands are full. It's not about having the stands full. (Of course, the reason the stands aren't full is because of people like you.) I want to thank you for calling me an idiot. That shows where you come from, your education, your background....... Empty stands= A loss of money, something today's economy needs.

It's football man! Yes, I remember the 70s and 80s and the empty seats at Lamar. By 2012, the seats will be empty once again.... this is the real dilemma for Lamar. If they can't get over 500 within three years the empty stands at Cardinal Stadium won't be pretty. The head coach hiring is one of the largest decisions Lamar will make in decades. If Tubbs is involved I think he will guide the decision process to the best choice available. As a member of the last football team that played at Lamar, I can rember how devastating it was when they axed the program. The players were on the verge of really succeeding and then all of a sudden they were without a program. GOOD LUCK TO THE ADMINISTRATION AT LAMAR THAT IS INVOLVED IN THE HIRING OF THE NEW HEAD COACH. They must make a successful choice the first time, and for goodness sake... Any one from New Jersey (ex - Abatamarco) SHOULDN'T EVEN MAKE THE CUT! I can't wait to see the home openner! I wish they could build a HUGE backdrop and hide the sulfuric acid plan ;-) Only 1000 of the 8000 students voted.....It already doesn't sound good. People who go to Lamar, go for degree, not for sports. As I have said in the past, look at the student support for basketball.

Keep hoping my Cougars are going to get better, but it is hard to do so when we're on our 3rd new head coach in 4 years. The kids just can't get a system down before the coach is gone.....It could be worse, the Lady Cougar girl's basketball team in on their 4th new head coach in 4 years... :-[ -
Lamar's first football coach

Who Would Coach the Lamar Football Team?
KDOSullivan replied to kville_extreme's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Above the Rim you are correct. If we are going to do it right, he has to be a college head coach or an up and coming OC or DC who understands the game and even more important, knows how to recruit. Hooks, Barbay, Stump etc. would be a disaster.....We have to pay the money to someone who is proven at the university level, not a high school coach.....Folks, I am still not gung ho about this Lamar football, but if it comes to be, let's do it right. -
10,000, 15,000 tops for the first game....I would like to see Lamar get football, but I just do not see it as being cost effective. We'll be the cupcake for several years. Our first years will be dominated by JUCO transfers from places like Blinn and TVCC. People of the Triangle will bore of the football program very quickly, and they'll be lucky to get 3,000-4,000 people. As far as the coach is concerned, they'll hire someone out of the local high school ranks with some name value, who just doesn't understand the college game....or they'll hire someone like Ray Alborn, washed up when he gets to LU.....Nice guy, Ray was, but was done when he came on Lamar's campus... Folks, we need to think about this before we jump in head first..... ???

I am a Lamar graduate, B.A. Class of '80, was a member of the Cardinal Marching Band for 4 years, met my wife of 26 years at a Lamar football game, all this said, I must say NO.....Part of the no comes from the fact that the new football program will come on the backs of students and their parents. A rise in tuition, is nothing more than a tax, anyway you look at it. Some of you forget the crowds at the Lamar games back in the 70s-80s. Maybe 2000-4000. Not enough to carry a team. I remember playing old USL ( Now Louisiana Laf.) and we band members being able to fold down empty reserve seats into words like " USL SUCKS." and it stayed that way during the game because the reserve seats remained empty.... How many Lamar students now go to the basketball games? Very few....Oh we may have a big crowd the first couple of years, but the newness will wear off and we'll be back to the same white elephant, just like the teams at Ford Park. How many people go to those games???? Besides if you are really a stud football player in this area and your choices were A&M, TCU, Univ. of Houston, or Lamar, just how many of these guys are going to stay in Beaumont? If we really want football, let some of the big money people in the area step up.
