1. Some names from back in the late 70's and early 80's for Nederland would be: Weaver(probably the best I have seen at NHS) ('83); Greg Macon('83) great shot and quick hands on defense; Brad Watson(believe he played at a University/College)('81); Kevin Austin('81); Hefner;English; Pat Wilson(late 70's); Wade Prejean(late 70's).  That was when they played 4A in the 70's and 5A when it came into effect.  Would have made the playoffs several years if multiple teams could have gone back then.  There are probably a few in the early 70's as well but I wasn't watching high school then. Of the players my sons played with only a few match up against those listed above: Kelvin Smith Chris Cunningham Colton Weisbrod Zach English Heard but wasn't watching at the time that Cody Becnol(sp) was pretty good. Did a little research and Nederland has had one player on the list of state basketball all stars listed by school: 1948 Walter Davis [Hidden Content]; That was a little bit before my time considering my dad was 8 year old then so I cannot vouch for how good he would be.
2. Great bunch of players and proud of their accomplishments.  They have continued the success began 5 years ago. The article is mistaken however, three years ago Zach and Colton were the only members of the current team that were on Varsity.
3. Does Nederland have workouts/tryouts tomorrow as well?
4. Just to clarify what qualifies as better multisport athletes?  I don't recall there ever being a lot of multisport athletes involved with Nederland basketball ever.  If it involves football, Nederland only had Forney that played football during Coach E.'s 3rd-6th years at Nederland and no one the first 2 years.  Chris Cunningham decided to play football his senior year so he was a basketball player who went and benefitted football and then came back to basketball.  He had Jordan, Josh Dean, and Jacob Pitts that played basketball and baseball during his first five years at Nederland.  Prior to Coach E. there were no multisport athletes playing basketball.  That issue is irrelevant and isn't indicative of Coach E but maybe how many athletes are discouraged by other coaches/parents not to play basketball due to it's conflict with the sport(s) they are most concerned with....I do agree Coach E's teams are more finesse and need to be more physical but that is a difference of philosophies.  It's unfortunate but typical for Nederland football loyalist to put down the athleticism of non-football playing athletes.  The truth is several players were repeatedly asked to play football which would indicate they were and are good athletes not lesser athlete because they choose to focus on one or two non-football sports.  I could be wrong but only 5 multisport athletes out of 7 seasons doesn't sound like a lot to me. This year I think Ozen and Central are better talent wise but Nederland still has the better coach with enough talent to win if they execute on any night.  I felt it would be a three way race and have not been disappointed.  Nederland can still finish anywhere from first to third and should be proud wherever they place in the top 3.  Now days, with 4 teams making the playoffs, it is not about winning district but making the playoffs and going as deep as possible.  I learned that from Nederland football;)
5. Nederland will be in the hunt as they always are......Last years let down should have been expected due to the number of 3 year players that graduated the year before being replaced by quite a few underclassmen with no varsity experience....This years returning varsity players gained a lot of experience last year and in the summer.....Based on what I saw during the summer, I expect the offense to be much improved and defensive errorrs to be minimized. Good Luck and Go Dogs!
6.

Looks like an upset in the making...  ;D
Not really. HJ has won a few state titles, Nederland zero. Ned has only beat HJ once, which was two years ago.
I'm not sure about 2 years ago but Nederland beat HJ in @ HJ 2008 with seniors: Josh Dean, Jordan Pitts, Francis Torres, Chris Hammond, Evan Fitch, Freshman Dionte Forney...It was the first year they played and Torres was like the HJ players last night...he couldn't miss and scored 40.  HJ went on to have a good year as did Nederland.  These early games rarely reflect what a team will be by district.
7. You don't bump them up now and expect them to hit....not that they can't hit varsity pitching but it will take several games to adjust and it's the end of the season.  I say this having seen players, including my son, hitting .700 at JV look foolish in their 1st few games when moved up to varsity midway through a season.  If Cody thought undercalassmen were the answer then he would have already moved them up.  Hitting was the one area I thought might hurt them this year after losing most of the offense from the previous 3 years.  They just have to focus on winning with pitching and defense during the playoffs and hope they eke out 1 or 2 run wins. I agree that Ozen was better than their record implies this year.  They were in a lot of games against teams that normally 10-run them.
8. I echo the entire thread's sentiments about Brett.  He's a workhorse that sets the example for all the players around him but more important is how good a young man he is.....a true rflection of his parents and grandparents.
9. Chris is good coach and will make a big difference there, especially hitting.  I did not always agree with him, (but then again I have never agreed with any coache 100% of the time......it's too easy to coach from the bleachers:)  I will never doubt his desire to get the most of a player and be a positive influence on kids.  I know he worked with my son and made him a better player.  Wish the program nothing but success.
10. PNG should win this based on talent.  Vidor lost way too much talent but you can never count out Kyle's ability to coach.  He has a way of getting the most out of his players and putting them in a position to win.  Mark will keep his players focused making it a good game to watch.
11. He moved for baseball because there was no chance he would be able to play for Nederland this year due to his own actions. Trouble at HJ and move; trouble at Nederland and move; now to Vidor, where will he go next year?  Do we see a pattern here? First time might be bad judgement but second means lessons were not learned from the first move.  At some point you have to acknowledge there are similar re-occurring issues and address them!  Currently he has learned to run from all accountability.  It's a shame because he is a talented player with alot of future potential but not if he doesn't correct the behaviors that have caused him to change schools.  There are life lessons that need to be learned outside of baseball.  My parents would have told me to live with the consequences of my actions....not moved so I could play sports.  Will be disappointed in Kyle if he lets him play this year knowing the kids history.  He could teach a lesson and have him play next year.
