Weaver Ned. '83
Jamie Weaver was a very good player but not the best to come out of Nederland.  That honor belongs to Buddy Davis ('48).  Davis was 6' 8" and averaged over 30 points his senior season at Nederland and accounted for 60% of the Bulldogs' points that season.  At Texas A&M Davis became an All-American in basketball and an Olympic high jumper.  Davis won the gold medal with an Olympic record in the high jump at the 1952 Olympics.  In 1953 Davis set the world record in the high jump.  He also played six years in the NBA.

I realize that this was over 50 years ago but the discussion of who is the best basketball player (and probably best athlete) to come out of Nederland starts and stops with Buddy Davis.

second to him has to be George DeVries..
15 letters out of 16 tries
all four years in track
all four years in basketball
all four years in baseball
three in football
won state as runnning back for nederland in '57
and went pro in baseball
Wow!  I Knew Mr. Devries was a good athlete but didn't know how good.

SHE SHOULD NOT ONLY BE SUSPENDED - SHE SHOULD BE ARRESTED !!!!
Enterprise says she was arrested and taken away in cuffs.....They also said she waited for the Jaguar player to take off the face mask she was wearing for a broken nose....I would say that shows intent to inflict serious bodily injury and should result in Aggravated Assault charges but I doubt that will happen.

Ned Fab five:
1. Francis Torres 2009
2. Brian Hefner  late 80s
3. Jamie Weaver early 80s
4. Corey Loupe 2000ish
5. Dionte Forney PRESENT
THIS GROUP COULD SCORE IN BUNCHES...
I can agree with Hefner, Weaver, and Loupe.  Forney may become a top five by the end of his senior year if he gets to playing consistent.  He has a ton of talent.  Torres was good but no way is he top five from Nederland.  He averaged 10-12 points a game.  I started watching Nederland Basketball in the 70's. Pat Wilson(70's), Wade Prejean(70's), Rory Hanley(70's), Brian English(80's), Mike Mayes(80's), Kevin Austin(80's), Greg Macon(80's), Cody Becnol(90's), Buddy Davis(see prior post) etc. all averaged more than that. Wilson and Prejean knew how to pass the ball better than anyone I have seen in modern Nederland Basketball.  I think a lot of those players get missed due to only one team going to the playoffs in the late 70's and early 80's.

Thanks for the info.  IMO it's hard to compare where anyone absolutely falls because the game has changed so much over the years but you can't argue with and Olympic Gold and NBA career.  It's one of the reason's I like this type of question because you find out some history.

7. Congrats Dogs!!!  It wasn't pretty but a win is a win.  PNG played hard and will contend for a playoff spot.  I think their coach will have to use his bench to get his starters some rest.  A minute here and there would have made a huge difference.  It was obvious Nederland was fresher at the end of the game due to English using his bench to rest players.

1.Central
2. Ozen
3. Lcm/Nederland/Lumberton/Livingston/Png/Vidor

It's to hard to pick right now
but if i had to guess i would take LCM, Nederland, or Lumberton to fill in those last two spots.

This district play will be real interseting!
I wouldn't consider nederland right now
Why not? I've seen most teams play and there doesn't seem to be a dominate team that is playing consistent including Ozen and Central.  It will be an interesting year.

Some kids are NOT scholars, if not for BB I would have had to pay some serious $$$$, although mine was recruited and signed early with Lamar in 98 he elected to go the JUCO route, he/we have not regretted going that route, you will find most JUCOs are in a small town inviroment and easy to fit in, some are indeed Baseball factories. Some how mine even got a scholarship for summer school, I asked no question and got no lies...
Your exactly right not all players are scholars but those that are and/or those that could be with a little more effort, need to know the realities of what is available.  If a player is a good student, they should apply for scholarships at several colleges in the Fall of their senior year.  You could end up with several academic offers from which to choose.
10.
In most cases, you can actually get more money from an academic scholarship at a DI school than you can an athletic scholarship. Kids really need to focus on their grades very early on.
Very true!  Even at a JUCO you don't necessarily get a full ride.  I believe Josh Dean got 50% from Blinn.....Jordan Pitts received an offer from a JUCO but it couldn't match what he has academically from McNeese.  As a parent that academic money makes a difference, so do not minimize the importance of grades.  Also take the SAT/ACT early and several times.  Most students improve each time.  There is also the added benefit:  if you get an academic scholarship all you have to do is maintain the GPA whil athletic scholarships are a year at a time meaning you may not keep it or it may be lowered due to injury, poor play, better player coming in....  A players goal should be, like Jordan and Jude Vidrine, to have the option of going on either an athletic or academic scholarship.  It just increases oportunity.

It was a defensive game...lots of 3's and ball movement which slowed the game down...but all in all Barbers Hill came out on top.
Based on the score, it does not appear there were "lots" of anything, especially 3's. Do you mean 3 pt attempts?
You are correct.  Neither team played well.  People can twist it how they want, but it's the first game of the season and it looked it.  Both teams need a lot of improvement if they intend to contend in their respective districts.
12. Not sure that Harper is even playing in this tourney with the Show. I know he played a few games with them in Arizona, but left early to tryout for the USA National Team. Have not seen or heard his name in any of the Blogs on the Perfect Game web site. I feel certain if he was there, he would be getting a ton of coverage from them.

Harper wasn't there.

San Diego won 7-0

WP: Josh Gonzalez (SDS) 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 K, 4 BB

LP: Matt Hicks (GTB) 4 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 3 K, 0 BB

Jacob Pitts pitched the final two innings with 4 K, 2 H, 1 R, 1 HBP

CF Cody Smith (SDS) 2-3, 2 R, 2 RBI; DH Kane Beniot (GTB) 1-3

Finished 3rd in pool with 2-2-1 record.

13. You wanna bet?....Nederland, PNG, will NEVER win 20-4A as it is set up in basketball....NEVER...Ozen will dominate, and in down years I would pick Livingston or Central....As for PNG?...Not even in the playoff discussion...No foot in the mouth here, thats just facts..

To ever be able to claim district you have to prove you can beat Ozen until that happens , I will pick them.  However Nederland tied for 2nd this past season they didn't need the 4th spot to make the playoffs as you stated would be the only way they would make it earlier.  Nederland will be better this year than last.  Are they ready to compete with Ozen?  Only time will tell.  Forney would be better if he only played basketball if for no other reason than he has to do football workouts to include squats during basketball season whether he has a game or not.  That takes it's toll.

14. Isn't Bryce Harper's team in this tourney?

Plays for San Diego Show and will play GTB tomorrow.

San Diego is 3-1 and GTB is 2-1-1 in pool play.  Sets up to be an important game in pool play tomorrow.  If GTB wins thye will be at least tied for 1st in the pool depending on outcome of Indiana Bulls and NCBA game.  Bulls are 2-1-1 and NCBA is 2-2.  GTB needs to win and have NCBA win.  PG website indicates Hicks and Benoit will pitch for GTB.  GTB has allowed the fewest runs in it's pool so far.
