Best High School Football Players you have ever seen
ndn2016 replied to HORNSHATER08's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Joe Washington - Lincoln (70-72) Larry Mayer - TJ (70-71-72???) Jeff Bergeron - PNG (70-72) All american with Tony Dorsett Briles -Stephenville (98-99) Steve Worster -BC (64-66????) J. Rodgers - LC (06-07) -
I remember the Texas City - PNG game well, I was a photographer on the sideline. The whole game was played on one end of the field. Neither team crossed the 40 yd line on the North end of the field. We won 9-7. If you are showing your age I was probably 17 that year. I remember after the game it started pouring rain and we had to jump my car in it. Brutal weather, but a very exciting win for a team that was picked to finish 4th in the district, but finished 4th in the state.

Tonight the coaches tried this. Livingston picked off 2 early passes for TD's. Livingston defense was in Harrison's face all night. He was sacked several times and had to hurry all night. IMO Livingston has a better Defense than Nederland based on the PNG - Ned game and PNG - Livingston game which I watched. So my data base is somewhat small.

What do we know after the second district game?
ndn2016 replied to Foyce's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
I don't see anyone going undefeated in this district. Nederland and Central are the obvious possibilities but one of them will beat the other and Vidor, Lumberton, and even Livingston may have a surprise for the other. Nederland was flawless against PNG. PNG shot themselves in the foot several times at key points from a momentum standpoint. It is always possible for high school players to fall apart on any given night and the end result is a better team on paper loses to a lesser team. The potential for upsets in this district is one of the things that makes it such a fun district to watch. -
No shirts mean no cheers at Silsbee High School

Seems to me that a parent was banned from LCM baseball games about 2-3 years ago for being unruly. His son was on the team. It looks like the public property argument did not hold water in that situation. -
PNG-Lincoln 1971 - 72 school year. Bergeron and Little Joe put on a show. (28 to 21 final score) cant remember who won (Sr moment) PNG - Odessa 1975 state championship PNG won 21 to ?? 1974-75 school year TJ - Lincoln 13 - 13 tie which led to PNG being the distict champs because TJ & Lincoln & PNG each had 1 loss. with very little time left Lincoln( I think) scored then missed the extra point. PNG went on a run that year and lost to eventual state champion Brazoswood 14 - 7 in the dome in the state semifinal. I agree with Purple 4 ever on the TJ - PNG game in 1980. Drug a friend of mine from Ohio to that one to show him how crazy people around here are about football. I told him there would be about 10,000 there and he said no way. turns out he was right there were about 14,000. Also saw Highland Park and Plano in around 1978 at Texas stadium in a regional. Plano scored 28 points in the last 13 or so minutes of the game to come from behind to win which was almost a carbon copy of what had happened 3 years before when they met in the same regional with Highland Park winning. Uh oh thread says game, not games never mind.

just occurred to me that it just might be the difference in the closeness and pace of the setting with baseball, softball vs. football. Parents typically or more involved in coaching diamond sports than football which makes it more tempting to keep coaching. Football has school organized programs from the 7th or 8th grade on up with a lot more coaching support (6-10 coaches vs. 1-2) than dia. spts. Although they start in the 9th grade in baseball, not many coaches to go around. There are some very good parent/little league, etc coaches out there and some of them have definite ego, etc.issues, but the HS coaches in this area or handed some pretty well coached players and I am not sure that all of them recognize how good they have it here from a talent stand point. I seem to remember an article about the Central HS softball team a couple of years ago where the coach said that some of her players did not know which hand to put the glove on when she started. If I remember correctly they ended up forfeiting some of there schedule before the year was out. Some of the parents have spent significant amounts of cash and time taking their children to camps and select tournaments. I know one particular coach named on this thread who seems to have the same answer for any one who questions him about what he is doing that goes something like I do not tell you how to do your job that puts bread on your table and you are not going to tell me how to do mine. OK, but my job does not involve his children nor does he contribute tax money that helps pay my salary. I have watched for the last several years as several talented players that had good heads on their shoulders and good attitudes walk away because they did not want to play for this coach. I know a coach has to have a my way or the highway mentality to a certain degree to keep from having chaos, but I think a good coach can keep a balance and get better results all the way around. With that said I do not think that I have the make up to be a 'good coach', but I am not making a living at it either. My son does not play HS sports so this does not directly affect us.

Nathan Minshew should be mentioned here. Sorry, do not have specifics on his list of achievements, my understanding is that he got a full ride to Lamar for engineering. Any one out there in hiring capacities should go ahead and sign him now. He will make a great employee some day. He is a very determined ball player and student. He approaches both with ' a leave it all on the field ' mentality. He reminds me of John Cangelosi that played for the Astros a few years back, not real big, but very big hearted.

Now that the regular high school season is over when is the Babe Ruth Senior League going to start? ???

ndn2016 replied to oilerfan4life's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
how big was the crowd? looked pretty good on highlights. -
I've been thinking that Lumberton may soon be headed for 5A with the growth in that area. They are talking this week about building a new elementary and middle school because of the growth. If that happens it will be kind of sad because the potential for rivalries with the 22 4A schools is just beginning to heat up.

Today's enterprise had an article with a headline about Dayton being the last team from Setex, then the context of the article was mostly about Lumberton.

agree with PP4ever - Central and Ozen always have athletes with potential. Png has some offense back to build on, but the defense is gonna be hard to replace. There is about 100(slight exaggeration sp?) guys on JV, and God only knows how kids will develop in the off season. I think Lumberton is in a similar situation, but I do believe their underclassmen will be very motivated to work hard in the off season because they saw how much fun it can be to win. Vidor is loaded with Jr's and Soph's so they can be a factor. Dayton will be very good again and the extended season will only make them better. With all the blowouts there Jr's and soph's are getting some valuable experience. If Dayton is in the district they will be picked 1st. The more I type and think about it. It is very tough to pick in this district. I think PNG, Ned, Lumberton,Central,Ozen, and Vidor all have 2nd and 3rd place potential. I said all year no one would go undefeated in this district and I believe it will be true again next year. I think next year it is highly possible that 2 of the 3 playoff teams will have 2 losses. It will be a real head scratcher at the end of the season to sort out the head to head and point spread factors to determine the 2nd and 3rd place teams.

NO TAILGATING AT DP STADIUM? ARE THEY CRAZY?
ndn2016 replied to ^Gusher Fan^'s topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Rule 1 is more of a concern than tailgating. I was at the Lumb/ned game and it took us about 30 minutes to get out of the stadium and that was after I sat in the stands and let the crowd thin for about 20 minutes. they better open up more than 1 hour before game time. -
hey 88, I just found you a toy. it is a red power megaphone with a sirene. located on Southeasttexas.com under miscellaneous/ item 69

District 22-4A - 117......District 21-4A - 14
ndn2016 replied to akifan94's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
very interesting. PNG was very balanced tonight. 4 different guys scored and 33, 81, 2, 29, 9, 8, & 6 had plays where they gained 10 + yards.
