In this day and age I think some sort of conference call does sound right. Great suggestion. Who knows why it is done that way. It's the UIL's thang.

The whole key to that is, there is a line that a coach shouldn't cross when arguing his point. That's what gets them in trouble. Most umpires are only going to listen to so much about a strike zone mainly because it plainly states in the rule book that arguing balls and strikes is an ejectable offense. I have my way of handling coaches that for the most part works fairly well. One thing also is, just because a coach is thrown out of a game, that means reports are written and then the UIL board brings the coach in and makes a decision about what happened. Last I heard from the UIL, about 95% of ejections were upheld. So in 5% of the cases the coach was found that he was wrongly ejected and such was not disciplined or his name mention in the UIL leaguer for a violation or possible probation. So there are checks and balances to the system to try and make sure that a coach is not falsely accused of mis conduct.

I don't care what position I would have been in, but there would have been some paperwork on that !!!!!! Some coach would have received a trip to Austin lol

Yes it is a fair ball, but since I was at that game last night, I didn't see that happen in that way. There was a bunt called a dead ball strike because the home plate umpire said that the ball hit the batter in the hand when he went to bunt. That was the right call. There is no such thing as hands are part of the bat. If you are swinging or bunting and the ball hits your hands then it is a dead ball strike. If that is the play from last night, the batter was not pulling out of the way that i could see and the home plate ump said it hit his hand which is why the call was made as it was. I was at first base in that game.

I have no idea, even being in the back of the box, how a pitch could cross the plate and still hit the batter. That tells me he stuck his leg out, I would call a strike if it was in the zone, and then tell him not to do it again.

it is a foul ball. This was a question at an Astros game once I was at and I missed it lol Thats how I can remember the correct ruling.

I have trouble believing the field umpire would say something like that....If so they should have got together and corrected the call. Umpires don't show each other up, they back each other up. I wasn't in this game but my experience from calling at many different parks is a foul pole that extends a good distance above the fence is quite helpful. Having that standing alone gives a much better perspective about where the ball is when it is crossing the fence. Untill you been there and have to make that call close to the line, be careful about packing stuff and heading home.

In Recent times I would say the best that I called was a kid named Tucker that went on to play at I believe South Carolina.

If the field umpire which is closer than the other called it a no catch, then that is what he saw. To appeal to an umpire that was farther away and maybe not in the best position is not right. It is true that the homeplate umpire is the umpire in chief but we do not over rule other umpires that had a better view. You just don't get to keep asking until someone calles it your way. I have had my share of getting yelled at for not over ruling my partner over the years, but that is what being a team is all about.

Hopefully they will be able to attract some big playoff games there but our location in this part of the state may make it tough. Will have to get some folks to drive over. Our local teams using it as much as possible is not enough. Big time gate from big schools is what they need.

Closest thing I find is this. Fair Batted ball touches spectator. Ball dead immediately , Penalty: Award or penalize according to umpires judgement. I would say in most cases, this would be a 2 base award. Reasoning is , for it to touch a spectator or in this case a player warming up, it most certainly would be more than a single. Now lets say it was down the first base line instead of third base, and the umpires judgement is the runner would have gotten a triple. He has that right to make that call. If you do something like that, more than 2 bases, be ready to explain to a coach why you are going to give more bases. Forget about the part where you ask since it didn't affect the play - does it remain in play. Once it touched anything it wasn't suppose to, it has altered the play.

I was suppose to call at West Brook tonight but that game was moved to Baytown. So far I have not been needed but you never know what last minute thing will happen and someone will cancel and I will have to make a flying trip somewhere. Maybe it will be a quiet night.
