Sorry, I must have been mis-informed by his head coach. I'll try to do better research next time before I post. Maybe someone from the coaching staff or the team is on here and correct me if I'm wrong. Certainly looks faster than that when he ran away from Livingston last week. I haven't missed a game since 2002 though in case you were wondering. -
Man I have to agree. 22-4A has fans like we haven't seen from those Houston Schools. I couldn't get that PN-G fight song out of my head for 3 or 4 days after that game. It was 40 something to 7 with 2 minutes to go in the game and the band and the fans were almost as loud as they were for the opening kickoff. There wasn't an empty seat on the visitor side until the clock read 0:00. Contrast that with the past 2 weeks when the Texas City and Livingston Bands were the only people left in the opposing stands IN THE MIDDLE OF THE THIRD QUARTER. I'll drive the 2 hours to PN-G or Nederland or LC-M (I live in Houston) to watch Dayton get the crap beat out of them as long as it's in 22 4A. It would be fund to continue the 13 year (or whatever it is) winning streak over the school my mom and girlfriend teach at - Crosby. How PO'ed are they...finally get us out of their district and they meet us in the first round of the playoffs the next 2 years and get BLOWN OUT again. I don't think they've beat us since they gave us our only loss and ruined our 1990 playoff run. Someone help me out here because I moved away for about 10 years. HS Football in New England sucks by the way.

Texas City was as big and fast a team as I can remember seeing. Livingston was big, PN-G was big, Friendswood was big, Central was big. Again, big is great when you're trying to stop the run. You have to change your defense to play a 4 WR team that spreads it out and it tends to negate the size advantage (see Hawaii over Washington, Florida over Ohio State just to name a few). From what I've seen and heard, it's going to be another size versus speed match-up offensively. Defensively for Dayton I still can't figure out how the heck they do it. Linebackers 185lbs, Defensive Line 200-240lbs, and they absolutely stuff much bigger and seemingly more talented smash-mouth offensive teams. Maybe it's the 3-4 they run, I have no idea, but they play some amazing defense and they just don't seem to miss tackles. I've never seen a high school coaching staff make in-game defensive adjustments as well as Coach Stewart's staff. -
I talked to Coach Stewart the other day and these are his words "AJ isn't that fast, he only runs a 4.8 but he runs great routes, he's hard to tackle, he's a great athlete, and you just can't catch him." Football speed and track speed -2 completely different things. Someone correct me if they've got some first hand knowledge.

Who beat who, when, where, and why doesn't matter. What is Dayton's record since Gregory Charles came back from injury? Big D-Lines stop the run, I'll give you that. Can they rush the passer and can their secondary cover 4 good wideouts. Most teams don't have the athletes to match up against 4 wideouts. Oh, and Gregory Charles is no statue back their either. Defensively, Dayton hasn't seen a triple option veer that I can remember. The only team I've seen move the ball consistently on Dayton this year was Friendswood and they did it through the air and a couple of fluke long plays. I hate predictions, but Waller will have to get to the QB with a 4 man rush, control the ball on offense, and win a close game. If they try to make it a track meet then it will get ugly. -
Dugat is a special player and he's been there all year. Charles missed the first part of the season. Dayton's offense would still roll even without AJ as John Gable, Sommers, Fontenot, #81, and #2 are all top notch players as well. I'd like to see a Dayton guy as that's where I'm from, but that running back from Lumberton would have to be my choice. I guess his name is Cody Hussey. He's the most valuable player to his team of anyone in the district regardless of AJ being probably one of the best 4A players in the state. Amazingly enough, word is he only runs a 4.8 forty. Funny thing is that Jerry Rice never ran faster than a 4.6 - football speed man.

I'm going to have to disagree, Dayton doesn't RELY on anyone. The perceived reliance on AJ is just due to the fact that he's amazing with the ball in his hands. Just like the rest of Dayton, on paper he's not all that impressive - 6'0" 200 lbs (maybe) 4.8 40. Fortunately, football is not played on paper. Defensive Tackles can dominate all night...what's that gonna do against a team that runs 4 wides and throws about 65% of the time and very seldom runs up the middle. Dayton's biggest lineman is only about 240...not exactly the formula for running the Nebraska veer. As for the L-Train - Keep posting, that's what this forum is for. -
dayton broncos build on new horizons

Strangely enough, when I played in the early '90s we had PLENTY of size but lacked the coaching. We've always had the athletes. Too bad Jerry Stewart hasn't been our coach for longer than he has been. -
Great job this year Lumberton. Your fans have a team to be proud of and your team has a class group of fans to be proud of as well. I hope to see you continue your success and build off of this year. To have never been to the playoffs and then to get to the third round is something to be EXTREMELY proud of!

I'm not going to overlook anyone this late in the season. Waller should be a tough match and they put a fairly good whoopin' on Lumberton (they did beat us remember, no excuses about our 3rd string quarterback either). We do have Coach Stewart though and you know he won't let anyone overlook Waller. As for Highland Park, I've got 2 good friends from there and got to watch them early in the season and I'm just not sure that they've seen the type of athletes that SETX brings. No one can really tell how good a team is from the stands though so I hope we get to find out on the field (although they'd have to beat Ryder for that to happen I believe).

Being originally from Dayton, I've been thoroughly impressed with ALL the teams in the Beaumont area. When we moved to this district I didn't understand it because of the distance between the schools and because we're really an outsider to the greater Beaumont/Orange area. Even after somewhat dominating the district for the last two years as the new team, I haven't seen much in the way of any ill will demonstrated by any of the teams or towns and I'm THOROUGHLY impressed with the sportsmanship of everyone I've come across. To hear and see as many people as I've seen promoting and rooting for Dayton from outside our town, I feel like we've been embraced by the entire area even though we're no-where near any of the other schools. I really hope we stay in this district regardless of the long drives and even with the proximity of the Galena Park/Crosby district. Let's just say their sportsmanship falls far short of this district. Of course, the lack of sportsmanship shown by Texas City in defeat and what I heard from LaMarque after they lost to the Raiders, I'm not impressed by them either. For those of you that didn't see the game, Dayton could have scored 70 on Texas City and they still had to nerve to say "we'll remember how Dayton ran up the score." They stopped throwing the ball after the 99 yeard drive in the third quarter. Good luck to all of you in all the other sports, I will be rooting for you. From what I remember, Lumberton always has a good baseball team. Go Broncos

Unfortunately, I missed the Dayton/Lumberton game so I'd like to see a pre-district game. Can't say I'm dissappointed about leaving the Beaumont District because of the high quality of the teams and well because Dayton is not exactly close to ANY of the schools in the district. Maybe the superintendent from Galena Park will ALLOW us back in his district. I understand being upset with the same team winning district for 8 straight years or however many it was and beating your team 12 consecutive. Put us in with New Caney and Livingston at least.

Dayton 43 Livingston 0 Final/Comments
rollinac replied to KFDM COOP's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
First off, congrats to Lumberton on a great season. We sure were hoping for a rematch. Congrats to Livingston as well. As for the game, the offense got it going early with a few wrinkles on some of their basic plays. The fake QB draw pass to Dugat worked well on the first drive. Livingston actually changed their defense up throughout the game to try and combat the 4 WR look unlike TC from last week. Livingston just didn't have the talent to match up with the Bronco Offense and really didn't stop them all night. Defensively, the Broncos didn't play their best game but were bailed out when Livingston decided to pass uh I mean throw the ball up for grabs. They were actually able to run the ball fairly well and kept the defense off balance with some wing-t plays followed by 4 wide. Their 0 points didn't come because they couldn't move the ball but they killed themselves with turnovers. They had the biggest line I've ever seen on a high school football team though. 2 guys at least 6'6" and another 6'4". All 5 at least 270. I haven't seen or heard much about Waller but they're in the regional final so my guess is they don't suck. Hope to hear more happy news next weekend. PS - I don't like to get on refs too much because I've done it myself and it's no fun. However, a dead ball personal foul on an interception return for a touchdown is assessed on the kickoff and not from the spot of the foul (thus negating the touchdown). Try re-reading the pass interference rules as well because that was one of the poorest overall jobs of officiating I've seen in some time. Officials out of position, making calls out of position, incorrectly enforcing penalties called, and missing the most blatant pass intereferance in the middle of the field with NO ONE ELSE AROUND! Aren't the playoffs officiated by the highest graded officials throughout the year?
