TASO Legal Appeal Keeps High School Playoffs on Schedule AUSTIN, Texas –The Texas Association of Sports Officials (TASO) applauded today’s agreement in Federal District Court that will allow sports officials to call critical upcoming football and volleyball games as scheduled. In a hearing in Austin before Federal District Judge Lee Yeakel, the University Interscholastic League agreed to drop its demand that sports officials must register with the UIL by Nov. 1 to be eligible to officiate high school athletic contests. The hearing was in response to TASO’s lawsuit challenging the UIL’s attempt to create the registration, regulation and licensure program. “We are extremely pleased the UIL has once again backed off its unauthorized attempt to require sports officials to register with the UIL as a pre-condition for officiating games. The student athletes of Texas are the big winners today because important district and playoff football games and volleyball matches will go on as scheduled,†said TASO Executive Director Michael Fitch. The UIL was threatening to prevent, or lock out, officials from calling games unless they were registered with the UIL by Nov. 1. That would have had a severe impact on week 10 football games and the volleyball and football playoffs because TASO estimates as many as 20 percent of their members would not register and therefore be locked out by the UIL from calling those games and the playoff games. Judge Yeakel set a Nov. 10 hearing on TASO’s lawsuit against the UIL, promising to rule by December 1. In addition to abandoning its Nov. 1 registration deadline, the UIL also agreed in open court that it will not give preference to UIL-registered officials or UIL-affiliated chapters when assigning officials to games. “Today’s agreement is very important because it means officials do not have to be registered with the UIL to be eligible to work games at this time. The very important week 10 football games can go on as scheduled with the crews that have already been assigned to those games and the volleyball and football playoffs will proceed uninterrupted,†Fitch said. “The UIL registration program will do very real damage to the high-quality officiating system TASO operates that efficiently serves Texas student athletes, parents and school districts†he (more) 3737 Executive Center Drive, Suite 151 - Austin, Texas - 512-345-9640 - 1-866-283- TASO (8276) www.taso.org said, adding the UIL left TASO no choice but to go to court after the UIL adopted a program that will cripple TASO and high school sports officiating. TASO officials say many of their members who will not register with the UIL are the more experienced officials and a UIL lockout would result in a shortage of officials and a noticeable decline in the quality of officiating. TASO views the registration requirement as the first step in a government takeover of the most successful high school officials’ organization in the United States, with the UIL’s ultimate goal being to tax, license and regulate sports officiating in Texas, which is outside the UIL’s authority. “The UIL knows it is on shaky ground and has been backpedaling since springing this program last year by announcing concessions in hopes of making its registration program seem less of the power grab that it really is. Without today’s agreement, TASO believes the UIL’s actions would have created a shortage of officials for the upcoming volleyball and football playoffs resulting in a scheduling nightmare for athletic events throughout Texas,†Fitch said.

Indiana playoff system makes the BCS look great

Sounds like something the good Doctor up in the UIL office would be interested in so he can make more money! -
What you people are not understanding is that the good Doctor up in the UIL office does not want to change the way the games are scheduled. So if coach so and so likes a particular ref he can still choose to use that ref. The coaches have a big gathering in the spring and decidewhich officiating crew will call their game. That is not going to change if the UIL wins. The only time the UIL assigns a game is if the two head coaches playing each other on that Friday Night can not agree on a crew then a call is made to the UIL and the UIL sends a crew from say College Station or Austin, or Dallas all of this has to be paid for with your school taxes by the way! What the UIL wants is for the officials to register with the UIL and pay $50 annually. Also if this happens, there will be a push for National Federation rules in High School Football in Texas. Right now we are only one of two states that still play ball using NCAA College rules with a few exceptions. So what is all the fuss about! Well let me explain! TASO recieves $50 from each member across the state. TASO uses this money to pay insurance for officials, hold rules clinics, furnish rules books etc. UIL wants $50 from each official on top of what they are already paying to TASO. UIL will provide from what I understand nothing. I refuse to give my money away and recieve nothing for it. Why don't each one of you send me one of your paychecks each year and I will give you nothing for it! I will just put it in my pocket and go on with my everyday routine just like I always have only I will have more money and more money makes life so much easier. Think about it, ever since the individuals that run the UIL have taken office they have added more playoff games. There are two state champions in every classification now. Why do you think these individuals did this for the good of the kids? NO, they did it because the UIL sucks 15% off the gate reciepts of every playoff game in every sport across the state. More games more money! So see the uil could care less about your kids, they are just a couple of guys who went to college and became Doctor's and found a way to make easy money. I for one hope that this clears up the situation for some of you that want to rag on us Refs when we spend 5 hours at your school on Friday night so that your kid has the oportunity to play the game and we pretty much do it for free! On a good night at a 1,2,3 a game I make about 50 or 60 dollars. I pay for my own gas and meal. And the UIL wants the rest of it! That is why TASO is in court today, fighting for my $30 that I have left over after calling a game at your stadium on Friday Night! The Ref!
