I remember 15 years back when I was a kid and my dad took me, we stayed in the Omni downtown and I met Robert Duvall, Bill Paxton, Willie Nelson, and more. We always had to book when we left the tournament for the next year and they were charging 250 a night back then. I would hate to see it leave the Drum, alot of memories for me there, and being at State Capitol and in Austin always had the right feel, but if they have to I would rather see it moved to San Antonio than any other place. JMO
The "Drum?" Man, I just found out this year it's not a Gregory Gym anymore. Now those are the memories ;D
Can't believe you thought the state tourney was still held at Gregory. It's been at the Drum since 1978!!!35 years!!! You are completely out of touch, you should be banned from any basketball talk. Your credibility is totally shot!!! Your future posts will be subject to immediate deletion.
Busted! LOL!
Dove, they took the peach baskets down @ Gregory 20 years ago !!
So I guess next you're gonna tell me Naismith is no longer with us ::)
Who'se Naismith? ;D -
;
Did that qualify as real basketball?
;D

Just finished the book"The First Season".... Johnny Carter (23) Won a state championship in his rookie year as the coach at Kennard. Good read if you are a high school basketball fan. He won it three out the first four years there. Those old Kennard teams were in a different class than their recent teams. Always a battle when we played them. They could put a press on you.....
No- Look- I was thinking that the Dove was suggesting a situation wherein one DIVIDES $425 by 4 rather than multiplying. Additionally, I am sure you would be entitled to a Gestapo discount.
The Dove will have a comeupance soon enough. ;D
You guys forgot about replays happening this year! That was an awesome addition to the tourney...unless I missed them last year. Also, I thought that there were more games than usual that refs were very inconsistent. Would also like to talk about how White Oak gave a medal to one of their fans who was a student and was literally going bonkers in the stands for his team...he was probably more tired than the players after the game. He was leading that fan section like a boss. haha.
Replay was a good thing. WO had a ton of fans there. Would have been a good time to rob the town bank...lol

Will have to check it out next trip....
Rumor mill among some coaches at the state tourney was that the Harrison twins were entertaining going to Oak Hill next season....YES, the weather sucked......Vivo's is my new favorite state tourney restaurant.....it was great seeing coaching buddies from all over the state.....AAW saw every game but ONE.....4A and 5A title games were both great....Alamo Heights had the best fan section.....Dallas Kimball had the worst fan section, followed by FB Travis....if one more coach asked me if I was going after the Wheatley job, I was going to scream!.....MY STATE TOURNEY NOTES! 8)
What kind of restuarant is Vivo's?

* Should have taken a thicker jacket. * Double Tree wanted 425.00 a night(gouge) Had to stay in Round Rock. *Got to meet AAW! super guy. *Clarksville is the real deal in 1A. *Good championship game in 2A. White Oak pg # 11 was quick! * Argyle was impressive. I thought LeVega played down to Miller. They looked a lot more disciplined at the regional tourney. I believe Athens,Silsbee and HJ all could have beaten Miller by 15. * I thought Kimball would have handled the Yates press a little better. Kimball's shot selection wasn't very good especially in the first half. Game got exciting in the fourth quarter. *5A was a different level. Fun to watch the Flower Mound machine....Pg for Travis couldn't miss in the semi's. Next year should be Travis's year. *All in all it was a fun tourney. This makes 17 in a row for us. Hope for the next 17 years we can all still be debating which games was best....

FACTS about Yates/Kimball game

Actually I thought Yates was more diciplined than Kimball. The last quarter was exciting to watch. Enjoyed the 5A better. Thought the refs in the 4A were in over their head. -

Argyles defense is very good. Very fundamental. -
Okay, here are my two cents. For those of you that don't know, I am, well, I WAS a player as of last friday at around ten o'clock. I have played HJ basketball for 4 years now, and I can honestly say that in all my four years, I have never seen a team as disciplined as LaVega. They were in a lot of ways like Nederland except far more athletic. They did nothing dumb or flashy, they just played solid, fundamental basketball. Players from LaVega were where they were supposed to be at all times. When we went up one with forty seconds left and tried to make the pass up the court to get it across and stall, the LaVega players knew they needed to get the ball. They knew who our go-to guy was Prudhomme, so they stuck to him like glue. No timeout was needed to tell their players where to be. The defense they played was awesome. Not perfect, but awesome. They started out soft and let you get the ball up the court for the first part of the game, then around the third quarter, they started a little half-court trap defense, then once crunch time came around, there was full-court pressure! HJ knew how to beat it and had prepared for it, but Friday night, after getting ready to take the floor because Athens was shooting free-throws to win it basically, and then having to wait through TWO overtime periods did something to both teams that night, I can promise you that. LaVega was a [s]good[/s] great team. Their will to win was just like that of HJ's. They were not unbeatable, and anyone who watched Friday night could have told you that. HJ, I dare to say, COULD have one that game, but I don't think SHOULD have one the game. Were we capable of winning that game? NO DOUBT!!!!! But capability, probability, and actuality are three totally different things that can be extremely painful when they all don't agree. Now for the most important part of my post. LaVega's basketball team (not it's fans, because I am hearing differently of them, although I'm not positive about them) was the classiest group of young men I have seen in a LONG time (aside from HJ of course). They were extremely happy that they one that game, but when we went to shake their hands, there was not an ounce of sneering or disrespect coming from them. All they had were positive things to say about us and I think that is the most important aspect of High-School athletics. After the game when we were waiting on the bus to come pick us up at the back of the Coliseum, they came out AGAIN and shook all of our hands, congratulating us on a great season and complimenting all of us. They were extremely well-mannered, and if I HAD to lose to anyone, I'm glad it was them.
Good post 2012.......Are you sure you're a teenager? LOL
