Can Nederland win state this year?
Honest Abe replied to Mr. Buddy Garrity's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
I watched G-Ball in the Nederland tournament and there is no way that Nederland can hang with them. They don't have the big's to contain their big's. Come on people, get real they barely beat PNG. 20-4A is extremely weak this year.
U can't base an entire season based on one (rivalry) game! Come on, get real! They can't hang with them??? That's funny b/c Ned beat Ball last summer in a tournament... I'll b laughing at all of you when they surprise everyone except me! -

How many games have U seen them play this year, and have U seen the other 'top Dawgs' in the state??
Nederland sure hasn't, and when they do, they'll probably lose. They're going to have to beat at least 4 teams better than any on their schedule up to this point in order to win state. They're a very good team in this area, but this area is way down in 4A/5A basketball this year.
That's not my question ; I did not claim that they have faced an echelon team other than Christian Life. My question is; Have YOU seen these other teams play personally? If not, then how do U know how they will match up? For instance, I watched G. Ball play in the Nederland Classic. Nederland matches up very well with them-so it's not crazy to say they can get out of their region... -

I said both sides behaved poorly after the game. Nederland fans didn't clear off of the court for about 30 minutes after the game. What I meant by this is the PNG administration were the only ones trying to get thier fans out of the gym. Nederland administrators should've made thier fans leave once the mouthing started. Remember the game was at PNG. Grant it, there were alot of fans on both sides which made it hard to get any thing accomplished. Two players punched? Are you sure on that because I was next to the officer working the game and nobody said anything about that.
I am positive! I spoke to both of the kids myself. Just b/c it wasn't reported to the officer doesn't mean it didn't happen.
Come on now, let a 17 or 18 year kid punch another in the back. There would've been an all out riot in there. I think you may be stretching things .a little. There may have been some shoving, but I don't think any punches were thrown. I'll ask coach Abel to look at his video since his son was still filming after the game. Heck, it might of been a Nederland fan punching him because they let PNG hang with them into the final second of the game ;D
I am NOT a kid making this up-I'm an adult who spoke to both kids. Why would I make this up? I'm not trying to start anything, just giving the facts. It seems though that y'all don't want to hear the truth?? Do U find it impossible that this happened. It happened to 2 players who are smart enough not to retaliate against angry fans (kids) b/c their court got 'stormed' by a bunch of other students. BTW-The adults did not 'storm' the court. They waited until it calmed down a bit b4 going out to properly congratulate the kids-the Nederland fans do that every game (regardless of who it's against or where it's played).
I was at the game and walking my young kids out of the gym after the game. Both sides were mouthing off at each other. I think the NDN fans took offense because of the heated game and then afterwards students from the visiting school staying on the court mouthing. I guess I'm going to be a homer and say that if you win a game at somebody else's house, take the win and move on. There was no need to linger around and play the mouthing game with the team that lost. It went both ways, and it was parents involved also. The PNG administrators had to grab several Ned students and pull them away from the PNG side, they may have had to do the same with the PNG students, but I didn't see it. Some of the conduct I seen from both sides was a depressing end of a great game. Good luck to the Dogs and NDNS for the rest of the season.
Two Nederland players were punched in the back by either NDN fans or NDN players. Don't b a Homer here and think it was a one-sided ordeal. It was an emotional game and an emotional victory. U r suggesting the kids just say yeah, we won and walk off the court, fans (kids flooded the court immediately, not adults) too???

To answer your question Soulja I would much rather have the other team score with the clock not moving because then I would have time to score. PNG would have had no advantage in OT. The crowd was 50 50. And Ned made a great comeback to get it to OT so they had the momentum. Plus when you have the ball you have more control. By playing sound defense for that minute at least gives you the ball or time to win. You play to win. PNG played not to lose. Also #12 for PNG deserves great respect. He played the game of his life. Very small but a great stroke and used his ball fakes to perfection. Nobody played harder than him. Finally how about that atmosphere? Coach English has a tape he showed us and still shows his players before every Ned PNG from when he was playing. He scored at the buzzer to beat PNG much like Kelvin just did but the game was at the Dog Dome and about 500 more fans sto rmed the court than last night. Its great motivation and glad to see the rivalry is finally back to where it was 30 years ago. Its been a long time since a basketball game has been that relevant in this rivalry.
Excuse my last post as it was done from the Cell Phone with the misspelled letters and punctuation errors. I had completely forget that PN-G led the entire game and Nederland grabbed momentum late. I'm assuming that Nedeland had the momentum. Now I can see the argument. I'm normally for letting your team play defense, but in this case, I see why you would have forced the issue, ForeverADog . But I also see what PN-G's coach was doing and it may have worked if they would have carried out the play as instructed. I'm willing to bet that the PN-G coach, one of his last words during the last dead ball, was to 'please box out!' Had they boxed out, I'm sure the Nederland players would have still went for the offensive rebound and it would have been called over the back foul, probably putting PN-G on the line to win the game. BTW, was Nederland in the penalty at the end of the game?
#12 was AMAZING last night. That kid played his heart out! Nederland was not in the penalty. Abel COULD have fouled with 3 secs or so, and Ned would have had to take the ball out of bounds.
Can someone post career records of the above mentioned coaches. Including trips to the playoffs.
English helped validate his elite status last night. Down the entire game to PN-G, English coached his team from a late 6 pt. Deficit (his son did help out a bit by draining back-to-back threes and a runner-8 strraight pts) to a last second put back by Kelvin Smith. Stalling the ball for 90 seconds was brilliant!! I say 90% of HS coaches lose that game-not English ...
That was the most bone headed coaching decision I have ever seen. You have to go out and try to force a turnover, a bad shot, etc. Worst case is Ned. scores or shoots free throws. You still have plenty of time to score yourself. Letting Ned. get the last shot was plain STUPID!!!!
Have U ever coached at the High School level/or higher?? If not, then U have no right to comment on the coach. If U think U can do better, maybe U should get out there urself and see how 'easy' it is. I'm sure U would never make a 'bone headed coaching decision'. Come on man, how about some respect for the hard work and hours upon end coach Abel and others put in every season. Have U ever even played high school b-ball or higher??
I would love to see it, but state championship-caliber teams don't squeak out two point wins against PNG three weeks before the playoffs start. They should make a nice run, but I don't think they are an elite team. I can't see them beating the upper echelon teams from this region at this point. Hopefully they prove me wrong.
I'm guessing U didn't see them play against Christian Life in the Nederland Classic?? If you've only seen a few games this year, you're missing the boat... -
Never right to call anybody that. But Ned used to chant that at Brandon Arceneaux back when I was in high school. Great game. I hate there's no shot clock in HS ball but PN-G did the right thing by staying back they just didn't box out. Dogs keep finding ways to win period.
WRONG!!! That was the worst coaching job i've seen in a while. Why would u wait to let the other team have the last shot? At worse, Ned scores, take the ball down and score urself or kill a 3 ball for the 'W'. Did they really just stand there for 90 secs and wait for Ned to attack? WOW!!!
I said it a couple of months ago: 'Bigs' win District Championships, guards win U state titles! I agree w/Ur remarks about the matchup not being in favor of Nederland. The guards for Yates r too quick for Nederland's guards. I will disagree with U regarding Ball. I watched Ball play twice this year. They're impressive, but beatable. Ball and Nederland played the same team (Houston Christian Life) in the Ned Tourney. Ball beat them by 3, and Nederland lost by 8. Christian Life is 'STACKED'!
