Nederland is gonna have a pretty solid freshman group this year.
Will any be able to make an "instant impact" for Nederland this year on varsity, thereby challenging the upperclassmen?
No. They're not ready for Varsity. If Ned was 'rebuilding', then maybe. But we return 9 lettermen, and 4-5 kids who were on JV last year who will also contribute.
Thanks. Ozen may be young but with 5 players over 6' 4" they have some height for 20-4a!
Could be wrong Bearcat, but I think he's jackin' with us. I'm all but certain they do NOT have 5 players over 6'4". If so, I don't believe they will be on the floor playing much. Their guard play and quickness will make them dangerous. Regardless of their lack of Varsity experience, they will have plenty when district play comes around. -
Sometimes we spend too much time talking about the "next level". There is something to be said for being a real good high school player and enjoying it while you can. In fact for those few kids that are good enough to play at next level some find that HS was alot more fun.
Good call Bearcat. This is a HS basketball forum, and the original poster asked about the best HIGH SCHOOL post players in the area. Colton plays Post for Big Ned unless a taller kid comes along. I have no emotional attachments to Colton, other than he is a good kid who has a tremendous work ethic, and the fact that he plays for the Dawgs. I've watched him play a lot of basketball, and he's only started one year at the Varsity level. MOST kids don't get noticed until after their Junior year, so I think it is VERY premature to say what type of college player he will be. Whoever he signs with will be fortunate to have him. -

He will play the position necessary to help his team be successful. Remember, he will be a junior this year. His game will change and improve a lot over this season and next. As of now, he handles the ball as good any of our guards do! His worth ethic is impeccable, and he will be ready for college ball at whatever position is asked of him. -

Colton Weisbrod from Nederland and Dorian Chapman from PAM. Weisbrod is an undersized post at 6'5", but makes it up with his physicality and aggressive play. He can score at will. Chapman is more of a traditional post player who is long. He's a great shot blocker, and his length is a nightmare for smaller teams. -
One thing for sure, it is NOT easy to win in the Lion's Den. Ozen was defeated by 9 last year, but easily beat them in Beaumont. Excluding last year, Nederland has fought tooth and nail to leave Livingston with a 'W'. I remember 2011 when the Dawgs went undefeated in district, their toughest game was AT Livingston. We only won by 1 or 2, then beat them at home by 15+. Same happened in 2009 & 2010. With that said, I think it gives them the slight advantage at the 4th spot. But I agree Bearcat, the final spot is wide open.

What happens when Silsbee wins a few playoff FB games? Will they have enough to suit up a varsity basketball squad? -
Ned and PNG dropped from 5A to 4A in the Spring of 1988. The change went into effect the following Fall season of 1988. That was the year Big Ned returned to the playoffs since the mid 1960s. PNG went the following year. PNG moved back up to 5A for two seasons. I believe it was the 94 & 95 seasons? Then back down to 4A where they have remained.
