Did you know....Not one team who qualified for state in '07 returned to state in '08 (pretty tough to repeat), Houston Bellaire ('60, '61, '62, '71, '72, '78, '86, '94, '99, '08) and Corpus Christi Calallen ('93, '95, '96, '98, '99, '00, 02, '03, '05, '08) have the most appearances with 10. Bellaire has 7 state titles in those 10 years, Calallen has 2. No-No's by local players in state history: Phillip Hennigan, Jasper (4A), 1963, lost to Dumas 2-0. Most runs in game 3A, Jasper (14), 2007. #8 on Top Hitter list for 3A, Chantz Pryor, Jasper, 2007, .625 avg. Just a few facts taken from the state tourney program. A bit of thanks goes out from the Buna Cougar faithful to those from our small town who made the 5 hour + ride to support the Coogs and also to some of our area coaches (ones I noticed (Jasper, Woodville and others I am sure I did not recognize), and also some local players who made the trip to not only support the Buna squad but also enjoy the atmosphere of the state tourney and enjoy the outstanding confines of Dell Diamond.

Friendswood falls to Calallen in 4A Baseball Semi
bruno994 replied to KFDM COOP's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Corpus Christi Moody, 6-3 (only loss for Calallen). After the first inning today, it looked like it was going to be worse than the 7-1 final. Calallen came out crushing the baseball. Very impressive team, almost as impressive as Salado. -
upandunder, you have way overstepped your boundaries! This is a forum for opinions, merely opinions. Were you at the game? Noone here in Round Rock or here on this forum blamed Coach Terrier. Opinion at the ballpark was that he should have pulled him earlier also, but he chose to stick with one of his hosses who got this team here. The Cougars more than held their own and this team will be in the hunt again next year! My pick after watching the sticks that Salado had in game 1 today, is that Salado will torch the pitching of Mildred and win the title for them. The Coogs will be in the house for the 'ship game. Great season Coach T and the Cougars!!! I hope I didn't misspell any words here....

Yeah, I was doing some research on the web earlier also. Looks like he is without a doubt, the best they have (not putting the other pitchers down, but he had 16 decisions). If we can get to him, the Coogs should have a great chance. Lots of patience at the plate, we tend to get a bit anxious early and let the opposing pitcher have some 10 pitch and under innings. I think we are coming in there with alot of confidence and rest. Go Cougars, they are on their way to Round Rock as we speak!

Great win for the Coogs, not as dramatic as Thursday night, but still a state bound win. The Hemphill boys never gave up, they were a classy team in defeat, unlike the disgruntled players and coaches from New Boston. Also, us Buna fans would like to send our appreciation to the Kountze Lions baseball team for coming and supporting the Cougars through several series and alot of gas money (New Caney and Jasper)! Thanks guys! See you in Round Rock!!! Bring your swim trunks, Dell Diamond has a hot tub and pool inside the stadium.

I'll be there.

Best Buna Cougars Baseball Team ever?
bruno994 replied to Luther X's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
The '91 team was pretty solid. I would like to think that some of my (Class of '90, #16) mentoring and guidance helped that team to the level they reached. LOL! A solid lefty starter and youth coming of age all following the lead of their catcher (Ross). But this years boys have been down in 3 of their 6 playoff wins, with only 1 blowout win. They just never say die. The mark of a true champion. These boys should know, the whole town of Buna is behind them. Jasper will be packed with blue and white come Thursday night. -
Buna Cougars....15 out of 16, the only loss coming to Jasper, in Jasper, in a playof warmup game. Beat the #33 ranked (by the Sporting News) prep player in the nation tonight (Trey Haley, Nac. Central Heights).

What is the ruling on field size for H.S.?
bruno994 replied to stacey10's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
That rule is in Little League, must be at least 200' fences. If fence length meant anything, Minute Maid Park would have been ruled ineligible in '05 for the World Series with the 300' wall in left. -
13-1 Cardinals snubbed by 21-3A
bruno994 replied to KFDM COOP's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
My question is why did the game that BC lost to HJ mean nothing? The article mentioned that at least twice. Going 14-0 was not a priority to BC? I think it was, they threw Hicks. If it meant nothing, theywould have thrown some other guys who had not worked much during the season. Congrats to all the area all-district ballplayers and to the Cards on their district title. -
The Pirates played Buna hard in Buna. Gotta figure with playoffs riding on the next few games, it should be another good game between the teams. Gotta go with the Coogs.

EC vs. Anahuac/12-1 EC Wins/Comments
bruno994 replied to white_mex's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
EC impressed me against Buna yesterday evening, and by the looks of the score against Anahuac, they are rolling along right now. -
East Chambers played a very good game, Hillin struggled with control, Bucs pitcher threw a solid game, throwing alot of strikes, kept Buna swinging all evening. This is just the game Buna probably needed, the blowouts do nothing to prepare you for the playoffs, but when you have to work for a win, that just makes you better, gives the boys that confidence that they can win a dogfight. Great game by both teams, look for EC to make a serious run at the postseason.

Someone from LCM might want to speak up here, I believe those boys have been dialing 8 for long distance quite a bit. -

I wish Central the best of luck, and nothing nasty being said here, but quitting? What are you teaching the kids? Sometimes you have to take the lumps when they come. -
Buna vs. HF/3-2 Buna Wins/Comments
bruno994 replied to KFDM COOP's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Live from The Diamond in fridgid, Buna, Texas.... Buna Junior Brandon Hillin struck out 12, gave up 6 hits and walked none in route to a 3-2 win. Buna Junior catcher Ryan Sheppard, tattooed a 3rd inning pitch over the left center wall to get Buna back up 3-2. In all Buna had 6 base hits, struck out 5 times while walking 5 times also. Hillin worked out of trouble only twice all night. In the 6th, after a leadoff hit followed by a HBP, Hillin set the next 3 down in order. The other time came in the 3rd inning, back to back hits to leadoff the inning followed by a sacrifice, put Horns at 2nd and 3rd with 1 out. Hillin struck out the HF leadoff batter, then got a groundball to first to possibly end the inning, but the ball hit the first base bag and bounced off into short right field allowing both runners to score. The next batter promptly flied out to right. Great ballgame if you missed it. -
Hardin-Jefferson knocked off Buna 6-1 in the days first game. Hardin-Jefferson continued their winning ways by beating Ozen in game 2, 10-5. In the final game of the afternoon, Ozen out battled Buna in a 6-4 ballgame.

Welcome to February high school baseball. Never too pretty until March when district rolls around, the biggest reason for 3 and 4 game tourneys to shake the winters rust off. -
*Silsbee vs. Buna/Buna Wins 4-3/Comments*
bruno994 replied to KFDM COOP's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Pitchers duel in Buna at The Diamond, Buna 4-Silsbee 3. Neither team hit real well tonight, Buna had 3 hits in 20 AB's, Silsbee went 4 for 24 as well. Buna combo of Hillin (5 1/3) and Clark (1 2/3) combined for 7 K's and 7 BB's, while their counterparts from Silsbee, Skinner (1 2/3) and McDonald (5) walked 7 while striking out 11. Silsbee tied the game up in the top of the 6th, but Buna was able to push acrossthe winning run in the bottom of the 7th with a base hit by Hillin after Baxter had doubled over the right fielders head. Both teams played hard and left everything on the field. If you stayed home, you missed out on a good opening day. -
Silsbee 3 Buna 4

Lots of Buna doubters out there. We will more than hold our own. Pitching will be strong. Gotta get the sticks going with 3 starters back from basketball less than a week, still shaking some dust off. Plenty of underclassmen trying to make names for themselves starting tomorrow night. Should be a great game, come on out to The Diamond.
