Question for the Basketball Gurus!
Wildcatter replied to mammagotjuice's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Not a guru but do have a couple of opinions, first with no disrespect, if a kid gets a letter at this age I used to call them an everybody letter, just add a kids name and bulk mail. Even going into senior years kids will continue to get them. As I am sure you are aware it is when the money starts coming for the scholarship is when the letters matter. Those letters for Div 1 are few and far between. Granted there are alot of schools out there but most kids think if a Lamar comes calling its a joke and they are way to good for that. Reality can be a strange thing. Was watching KY play tonight and and their 9th man was the former Mr Basketball in Kentucky. Now barely plays. The next level is something that most kids do not have the dedication for because of a couple reasons. First, if they are really good then they are not really used to getting coached aka yelled at, cursed at, having to work harder than they ever have. In college sports they own you, plain and simple. There are not alot of one and done's out going to college. Second, as long as football coaches are the AD basketball will always be 2nd or 3rd or whatever. The reason this does not and will not happen at an HJ is because of the success of the program. Could you imagine the fb coach going to Sutherland and saying, not gonna have your kids to day unil they get that work out done. Believe me, it happens mnost other places. Get rid of the FB AD and make it a separate position. On the other hand, good luck with the year. -
saw it in a girls varsity game last night

So if the flag is thrown and then a timeout is called its within the rules? Thanks for the clarification. -

I don't claim to be a football wizard but I was not aware that you could get a penalty called on you but if you took a timeout they would just pick up the flag and could say my bad. Not sure who the crew was last night but they need to have a little refresher on the rules. They should also learn that if a guy calls for fair catch but is not the one who catches the ball you can actually run with it. Again, not the wizard but know enough to be dangerous. Bigg effort by OF last night, agree could have been different had OF not of knocked out qb. Moss and Shores hit the qb hard on the first drive, he was never the same after that. Moss also big on special teams with the block of pat and hand on it in the first half. Great strategy at the end bwhen EC was trying to let us score so they could get ball back. We did what we needed to do to win. Hope the kids ankle gets better soon, he is a good basketball player as well. -
Evans, Shores, Burton,

Not much to this one. Vidor scores on last play of scrimmage. OF looked pretty good on defense especially with some starters out but could not move the ball at all today.

In this district you can never do that. I will agree you do have some good kids coming up that I saw in the Jr high level a few years ago. Great hitters.

Still have to have the players to get it done. Mean no offense to HF, just saying in this district.

Take a look at Nederland incoming soph class as an example. If you look at most of them athey are not very strong looking, not the greatest athletes but have you seen them on the floor. They are fundamentally sound, can shoot the lights out and play great defense. They even won their group in Houston a few weeks back against faster and more atletic teams. How, by being a better basketball team. BTW how many 250 pound basketball players have you seen be a success in high school? Could they shoot, jump, or even get up and down the floor? No, But they did great in universal off season. -

Why call it universal off season if the other sports are IN SEASON? Why not call it football off season so everyone else can do our program plan so that the football program can get better and my non football playing guys will have something to gripe about program? I like it and think it will work. ;D -

Actually, I was at the game and they hit alot of 15 footers. My point is this and pretty simple I think. If I play just football, should I do a basketball workout during the period or do a football one? Does a football player need to know how to take a charge or set a pick and roll? Does a basketball player need to know how to do grass drills? I understand that you have after school, but why punish all other sports? During baseball season do a track workout, during football do a cross country, and football during basketball. This way all of your programs are screwed up. You can't win with lineman if you don't have a qb that run or throw, they block, someone else has to hold on to the ball, that's why they are lineman, they have a job to do but if the others can't do theirs they will not be a good team. -

And who won that state tourney, a group of kids that were fundamentally sound and knew the game better. How did Kountze do at State tourney? Not bashing Kountze just making a point. So, according to your argument, you don't need a qb or rb or recievers so long as there are strong lineman? That would be like saying that a bb team does not need shooters or rebounders just people who are strong and can't throw one in the ocean. We could just play to 10 makem takem would be your theory. If you never have a chance to work on the basics how can you get better? At a certain point it does not matter how good of athletes you have you are gonna lose in basketball. Look at HJ on a court when they walk out and tell me why they are such a good team. The reason is simple, those kids know exactly where to be on the floor, where a rebound is going to come off the rim etc.. It's not beacuse the old fb coach had them in weight training on game day. -

I do know that most football players take about a month to get into basketball playing shape when they come in for football so if the workouts are the same then why do the football guys struggle? No one has said not to lift, just why would you max on game day? Basketball workouts are not about the max weight, its about getting quicker, jumping higher, and working on your skill set such as free throws, ball handling etc. It has nothing to do with grass drills and such. If it is such a great idea then on Friday afternoon go to your field house and be a spotter while they max out on weights. You will have easy job cause no one will be there. It's funny, I grew up in basketball country and it is the total opposite as far as positions. Most schools have separate position for AD. Of course an AD wants success as long as it does not overshadow their program. -

I agree with you about established programs, but how are the other schools going to get better if they do not have their kids to work with? It would never happen at HJ or Silsbee but what about the other schools that are trying to close the gap? If you have non football kids they should be running cross country and working on their sport of choice. JMO -

Do your straight bball kids have to do football workouts during the season? That is where I have the concern. If a kid has never played football why should they have to do football workouts? The workout for bball is totally different. For example, do football kids work on jump soles during their workouts? Do they work on shooting a basketball during football season? Of course not. All I am saying is that a football coach should not dictate a basketball program. Could you imagine the HJ football coach telling Southerland that his non football players are also going to be doing football workouts during the period or they will have to come in before school to do them? Southerland would laugh at him. Correct me if I am wrong but I doubt the football guys are there at 6am do do a workout. I agree that lifting some during the season is ok but the head basketball coach should decide what it looks like. -

Disagree, if you look at WOS last year those were straight bball kids on the court. All I am saying is I watched kids last year who were having to max out on game day because a football coach said they should. My son plays fball as well and his time was spent on game day watching film not maxing out. In order for our baseball team to be able to use their period as they wanted the kids would have to be at the fieldhouse before school to complete their off season workout even though most did not even play football. All I am saying is if you are going to do it on bball game day do it on the beloved Friday night. -

Just don't see how grass drills help your jumper?
