Was Punishment to Hard on Devin Mccain
ST413 replied to BADSANTA's topic in High School Boys Basketball
As far as discipline for any earlier allegations. We would not know unless someone within posted it as those matter are kept quiet within most if not all school districts. And yes we had a player earlier this year suspended for 2 games for mouthing to a ref. Which was a case where I don't think the player ever mouthed to the ref actually but was animated about getting the first call. And in this instance I was sitting actually at the scorers table as close to the incident as you can get. -

Yes everyone knows that but an adult should be more responsible than making a video of a minor public. He could have withdrawn himself from it and turned it into the school. Or even the news media and the results would have been the same. -

I totally understand that. My statement although I went off on a tangent was just in response to the question of why one would think down on the adult poster of the video. And my disagreement with going viral with the video. There were other more appropriate ways to go about it. -

You did right in my eyes not posting one. I know Devon and know his personality. I have said and I won't make any excuse for his action. But my point on the last comment was as an adult that video should have been turned over to LCM ISD and let them handle it through the proper channels. Not put it online. Sure the behavior needs discipline but give him a chance to learn from it and become better. Sure I understand many feel that it wasn't getting taken care of from past accusations. If that's how he felt then handing it to his sons school to handle it was the way to go. -

Honestly I know many will look at this and view my statement as biased because of being a Tiger fan and yes a Devon fan. But I would say both. This is a minor not an adult. Yes he made a big mistake. But how many of us didn't make big mistakes when we were young. I know I did. And I know many have kids that have made big mistakes. Yes Devons actions warrant a punishment and he has accepted it even if many of us adults haven't. Now to get back to why my answe is both. He is a minor but no adult should make a video like this public. He should have taken it to the administration and let them go through the channels to handle the situation. And as far as the statement, a child's future should in not be ruined by one rash decision in such a moment. He should be able to prove he has seen his error and become the person he should be and receive anything he deserves at that point. If the actions continue throughout the rest of his high school career, then I am sure those scholarship offers will be taken away. Honestly it makes you wonder what motives or issues an adult has when he takes actions like this against a minor. -
The radio isn't either?

Very well stated. Whether you as an individual believe this punishment is too harsh or not. We owe it to Devon to help him through this but not so that it makes him forget that his decision was was wrong and there had to be some consequences. This is young man has a bright future that we will all be able to be proud of as long as we don't lead him down the wrong path. -

I have seen different ideas of this pep rally. I would hope if one is held it is in support of the team and yes even to let Devon know that we aren't turning our backs on him. I don't think this would be an appropriate way to protest the punishment. I have planned on being there to support the team. And I will and already have let Devon know I will be there to support him any way I can. Now if this rally is held and becomes a protest then I will leave. I think if you feel a need to protest the punishment it should be done in a way that will garner a response instead of one that may cause more strife. i have also heard that this rally will not be allowed to happen. -

The question is is the punishment too severe. I have had mixed feelings on this and posted on the silsbee/WOS thread what I thought was a good suggestion. It was a suggestion from WOS99 in response to a similar act by the Celina QB. "I am all for giving the kid options. A harsher punishment - an extended suspension or even removal from the team - or a less severe (but still tough) penalty in exchange for a public show of contrition - maybe an open letter or statement of apology and some form of community service. A show of humility. Let him choose." on the second part I don't feel just an apology and community service but some lesser suspension would be a part as well. This young man has already made an apology and accepted his mistake. I have seen enough of people knocking him down. His responded in the wrong way but none of us have heard or know exactly what caused him to make a bad decision. I am not even going to guess. I have known him for a few years now and he is not the villain some are making him out to be. He will learn from this and be a better person for it. Now in saying that I also have to say I have seen some comments that seem to be wanting to look at this like it didn't happen or was a minor incident. That cAnt be the case either. As much as I feel for Devon he handled the situation in the wrong way and has to pay the price for that decision. i for one will be ther for any support he needs and will be behind my Tigers all the way to SA.Lets quit trying to add to the situation and be part of the "recovery". -
This has been on my mind all day, and I surely can't condone the act. I am still not sure though exactly where I stand on the punishment. It had to be dealt with and had to be dealt with sternly. I still think I feel that in my opinion, the best idea may have been that presented earlier in the year in response to the Celina QB by WOS99: " I am all for giving the kid options. A harsher punishment - an extended suspension or even removal from the team - or a less severe (but still tough) penalty in exchange for a public show of contrition - maybe an open letter or statement of apology and some form of community service. A show of humility. Let him choose." i supported that decision then and I still think it would have been good today. Notice the and in their after the apology part and in addition to the apology and community service a lesser suspension should have gone with it.

I don't know the answer to that but based on them allowing the Celina Qb to keep playing I doubt they would.
-
Have seen that Devon is out for the year , Adams 1 game and no suspension for Tyler supposed to be confirmed from Coach Sigler.
-
Have seen that as well.
-
I can understand that but that wouldn't be right or agreed to.
-
May take a few extra which I am sure will be there anyway.
-
Definitely will be missed. No doubt about it.
-
I listened to JP many times in the 80s. He will be missed.
