  1. Actually it is in the works right now for all classifications 1A - 5A to move to an area meet.  You could see this in the next year or two.  So all classes would go District, Area, Regionals, and then State.  I was told it was going to happen next year at a clinic this past summer, but haven't heard anything recently.
  2. It was pretty awesome.  I would have liked to see them run Division II to see what they could have done if pushed.  Too bad they didn't.  Where will WOS run for Regional Qualifier? That might be the only place they get some comp for the rest of the year.
  3. Actually 1:58.30 is 3rd in 3A in the State and top 40 in the State of Texas 1A - 5A more elite than you think.  I was just looking at all the times/marks the 50.9 and 51.3 where the only one's that didn't seem to fit.  It does look like Shawn Lewis is the favorite to win the 400 at the district meet.  I wasn't trying to get everyone all upset.  Ozen's fastest@1906 I have always agreed with you that A'lexus Brannon is in a league of her own, so don't get upset just needed some clarification on what should be mentioned. I understand kids need press. there is a girl at Huffman who is #2 in 3A in the 1600 and has run 5:26 but you didn't see me put her time up because it wasn't elite even though it is probably leading the SETX area by 20 seconds minus K-Park.  I promise you I know a little about distance running and where times rank Mr. Playa  ;). 4. No offense, but what are you considering to be elite?  Is 51.30 or 50.99 elite? The 50.99 by Shawn Lewis is ranked 122 in the State 1A - 5A according to txrunning.com, and I promise you that doesn't include all meets and times.  So that is probably ranked more like 150.

  7. I totally agree.  No coach/school would say you couldn't bring your two best athletes.  That is crazy.

  10. Too many to list.  Also, depends on what you qualify as a Star.  Are you talking about state qualifier, district champ, or possilbe college athlete? IMO: Here are a few stars:  A'lexus Brannon OZEN TJ, LJ, HURDLES; Trey Franks WOS Sprints/Relays; Phillips Jones Sprints/Hurdles; Jeremy Johnson Silsbee Jumps(If he even competes). Also, it is way to early to be saying who is a star.  Go back and look at Local State Qualifiers from last year (on this forum) that will be a good measure for people to look out for.
  11. I don't know if any of you have been paying attention to what he has done in the 60 indoors this season.  He just won the USA Nike Indoor Championships 60 meters in 6.49.  He is fast...

  13. The only reason I say they don't count because honestly if you do a little hard work a talented athlete could get on at one of these places.  They don't all give ATHLETIC scholarships...  How many of these kids that don't go D1 initially end up at a D1?  If they do end up at a D1, then it was probably an academic problem initially that kept them from going D1.  How many kids, besides drafted baseball players, want to go play D2, D3 or JC? If they don't go D1, we all know that they have aspirations to end up at the D1 level.  The whole point about my post earlier was that kids and parents don't realize what it really takes to get an athletic scholarship.  They get a letter in the mail, and then you hear that kid a week later saying they are being recruited by Texas, USC, LSU....So, then every kid assumes that hey surely some of the smaller schools like Lamar or Sam Houston would give me a scholarship if he is getting looks from Texas.
  14. Just out of curiosity how many D1 Athletes have come out of HF in all sports in the last 10 years?  Not that many.  I am a coach and people don't realize how talented you have to be in order to get an athletic scholarship.  I can think of 3 or 4, and D2, D3, and Junior colleges don't count. What people don't understand is at the 3A level it sometimes takes more than being the District MVP or making it to the state meet in a particular sport in order to get an athletic scholarship.
  15. 86Hawk if you read my post I never said we were a powerhouse or had a dynasty.  I was just replying to what you said about HF ALWAYS has lacked in basketball. Sal, HJ was 3A in the year 1998-99.  I have a very vivid memory of playing HJ at HJ in a 3A District game in which HJ didn't make the playoffs: I believe it was HF, Liberty, and BH.  Probably the only time HF and Liberty were better than HJ in basketball.  Which we did have Brian Delord, which helped a lot with our success. I would have to agree that HF does have a decent little dribblers program, but again like some of you have mentioned it is Little Dribblers.
  16. 86Hawk what exactly does lack in basketball mean?  In '99 District Champions and lost to the eventual state champs Mexia by 6 or 8 can't remember, and lost to Kountze by single digits in the YMBL (Kountze lost that year to Mexia in Regional Finals).  And I think two or three years later they went 2 or 3 rounds deep in playoffs.  Now were we a Kountze or HJ defnitely not.  Since Tarver left a lot of things have been different at HF.  Not only in Football but Basketball and Track and Field as well.  Is it talent?  I have no clue, but everyone has their slumps.  HJ wasn't that great for sure in 98 and 99, and maybe a few years after that.
  17. Well I coach at a 3A school Huffman, and I would like to think that we have Track Athletes (4 State Qualifiers in Track last year, and one State Champion).  If you wanna be the best, shouldn't you practice like the best.  Cutting out practices isn't going to make you better.  If you have a kid who is good enough to help out your Track team while still competing at other sports, then they will make it happen (practice that is and making it to the meets).  How many baseball/softball games are on Saturdays besides tournaments?  Not many I promise you that.  The track season is long enough to coordinate games and meets, if you are at a smaller school then your coaches should get together and plan tournaments opposite of track meets, and if one overlaps then the baseball/softball kids miss the track meet.  It is as simple as that, and it is that simple with a little communication among coaches.   You have 2 scenarios:   1)  Thursday - Track Meet; Friday - Baseball/Softball Game and possible track practice if you can get them to come after a LONG THURSDAY NIGHT usually till 11 or 12 pm; Saturday - softball/baseball practice (Dual Sport kid beneficial, Track athletes not beneficial missing out on practices and quality track meets, Lazy Coaches - beneficial) 2) Thursday - Track, baseball, softball practice;  Friday - Baseball/Softball game, track practice; Saturday - Track Meet, Baseball/Softball Practice (Track Athlete beneficial, Dual Sport Beneficial, Lazy Coaches - Not beneficial) Hopefully that makes since. I understand that I am a die hard track/cross country coach, but believe it or not all kids aren't good at just football, basketball, baseball, volleyball, and softball.  ALL SCHOOLS 1A - 5A have kids that are willing to put in the work, but the problem is sometimes the coaches aren't.  You have to find them!  Track is a sport that can benefit all Schools Athletic programs, if they take it serious. I ran track at McNeese State University, and I always talk about every football player that went pro either was on the McNeese Track Team or came out their every week during offseason for advice or workouts from the track coaches.
  18. What days do you think schools like the Woodlands, Kingwood, Skyline, Rowlett, and other high powered track teams run on?  Let me answer that one for you on Friday and Saturday.  Seriously if the whole team has to suffer for a few individuals that is retarded.  You should practice monday - friday and then have a meet on Saturday.  Most coaches would rather sleep on Saturday that does a disservice to the kids and coaches who love track.  There are way too many Thursday track meets.  When I was in high school in '99 we never went to a Thursday track meet.  Just doesn't make any sense.
  19. Not that I care who won the game, but you weren't at home, so you won't get the calls you usually do.
