I sure forgot about that little detail! I hope the schools calling off practice yesterday remember that little detail? Since they have to be in shorts and t-shirts for 4 days according to UIL, missing yesterday means no pads till Saturday. I bet there will be someone turned in for this before this years is out. I wonder which coaches ego will be put in check by challenging this detail and putting pads on Friday even though they had no practice Tuesday? NOW WAIT A MINUTE DIRK!!!! You can't say on one post that HF will beat Lumberton in the upset of the year and then say Lumberton will win by ten? Which one is it???? Lumberton or HF??? You got to get off the fence.

Had a friend of mine tell me his son plays at HF and they had two long ones today and will be going at 5:00pm tomorrow but NO CANCELLATION in Hamshire. Business as usual.

Since the two teams did not play last year from what I can see or remember, there is little to go on except what is on the field this year. I saw HF play and although QB's are important, it probably matters less for HF. Let's pose the question the other way, who is calling the signals for Lumberton? And Lumberton by 3 TD's, i'll will take HF plus the points and take any and all action if you want it, otherwise I would be very careful with perdictions like that. I do believe they scrimmaged last year?? Good luck to both teams but I think this one will be REAL CLOSE but give the edge to HF at home, but what a great matchup in week 0, 4 weeks from today!!

I read in some publication don't recall which that HF has 24 or 25 seniors on this years squad. If they carry standard 32 or 33 players that is going to be alot of experience and should mean many returning starters from a pretty good team last year. They did beat Silsbee last year and had a JV I think that went 9-1 so I have to say HF will be one of the three in the playoffs, with WOS and probably Silsbee.

Do not know the specifics of Jasper HS but in other district HS (AAA) in old district they (coaches) are on a 8 period day so they teach 5 academic classes and 2 athletic periods (freshman and varsity) with 1 conference period. But if they have 1 athletic period only and are on a 8 period day they could still have a conference period without doing athletics on their conference. It all depends on there situation. But it is illegal to make a coach or teacher teach on their conference period unless compensated for the extra class this would include an athletic period. This I know.

Well, I definitely appreciate your explanation and apologize for my assumption of reading negativity into your comments. I guess when you read enough of these posts it becomes a habit of hearing negativity. I truly believe Coach Mahaffey will do a wonderful job. I have only met the man twice over the last few years but I feel comfortable saying he is a tremendous asset to your kids and your district. And if you truly believe what you just said, then congratulate your administration and your AD because HF just became better to be, and from what it sounds like, this has been the norm recently. Well, since I was the one that made the statement, I feel that your response to the comment "doubting Thomas" has done nothing to change my perception of your comment. You again only supported my perception of your original question and feelings of negativity in the hiring of this coach. You are (without merit I may add) are questioning the intentions of administration and their motives for hiring Coach Mahaffey. In particular you are publically bashing the intentions of the AD. You still feel that this man was hired to coach football "and by the way how do feel about coaching our baseball team on the side" feelings. Are you not? Anyway, doubt if you want, and hide it behind unmerited reasoning but this was a tremendous hire for your kids and your district, especially YOUR BASEBALL TEAM, and your being totally unfair to all parties involved in the hire and the man that chose to make HF his home. All I can say is I hope the other SUPPORTERS of HF athletics are not as distrusting, and critical of the AD and his future decisions for that district because if they feel as you do you will first eat your words and next probably run these good coaches off including the AD in no time. kentucky beat LSU this year does that mean they're a better team? On that day YES!!!!! I dont believe LSU was the best team in the country but on that day how can you say they weren't the better team????

I really believe this is a top 10 poll for all GT schools no matter the classification, therefore I find it hard to believe there are people that feel a Newton and Kirbyville could play a Westbrook, or dayton?? Another doubting Thomas?? I don't even have to look at a resume to know this was a great hire for baseball! Why must you? He has as much baseball experience as the coach that left and then tack on 25 more years of experience to boot in running entire athletic programs. Any questions??

Now that it has become official I want to commend the community of HF for a great hire!! Wayne Mahaffey is a great coach, no matter the sport. He will be an asset to your district in whatever capacity. I will say it again you are lucky to have him and his family as apart of your district. The rest 21-AAA should take note because the Longhorns are better and no games or practices have yet to begin. Congratulations to Coach Mangan and all the kids, good luck.

I'm more curious about the 3 district games BC is projected to win. I do not think they can count WOS, or Silsbee, so I assume they sweep the other 3 including HF and OF. I thought I read HF had 6 on offense and 7 on defense returning from last year and the score was 60 something to 21 I believe? That is a lot of improvement in one season. I will give them being optimistically speaking 2-8 or 1-9 at best by my account. But no doubt improvement! Baseballfan43: For the HF community's sake, I hope all this talk is true about Coach Mahaffey being the hire. And no disrespect intended, but I couldn't your original post in anyway but a complaint, and I have no dog in this fight!! Your exact words were "...but this was our concern from the get go is that the AD would go out and get a football guy and say 'oh yea, here's the baseball team too.' Just wondering why we can't have a baseball guy for the baseball team." If that wasn't a very unfair complaint against the hire and AD's choice, then I will apologize but there was no other way to take it in my eyes. I will tell you what, if you guys don't want him as your baseball coach, we will take him. TRUST is what makes the world worth living, and I don't know all the history but where did you lose the trust of the people making these decisions? Has the current AD and administration hired others in the past that gave you your distrust? Because I will say it again, if this is truly for real, you should be applauding those people. And swampdude, I do not know the current assistants, so I have no reason to or intention of disrespecting their abilities with my words, only that they can truly learn alot from a man with his experience, which will make them better head coaches when it's their time. Am I really hearing this correct??? Are there people actually complaining about this hire? You don't know what has changed? For one thing the people, are any of those coaches above interested in the job (Sims, Kay, etc.). That is the first thing that has changed. Secondly, promoting from within ain't always the best decision, so you don't do it just because this is the way it has been done before. And last, are you really complaining about this hire, if it is true???? Or are you mad because you didn't get the job???? Because this guy is a great coach, period, not just football, not just baseball, but a great coach, and you are not happy. Wow, what a world. Besides, if the assistants that didn't get the job are really as good as you think, they should help OVERCOME THIS COACHES "Inadequancies" in the area of baseball, but if they really wanted to become head coaches they would really try and learn from this guy. Just a football guy??? Questioning this hire, and the AD's motives on hiring a coach with his background??? Very, very, unfair, and uninformed, to say the least.

I understand your analogy but why does a guy with all that time and experience as a AD/HD FB coach take an assistant FB/Head Baseball job at HF??? But main questions is tru and is it official??? I'd say a great hire all the way around for HF. I would call it the biggest hire in the Golden Triangle for a school this hiring season. JMO but if this is true this is a great impressive hire by the administration.
