The teams play two completely different styles on offense. Friendswood passes almost every down, but they balance it well with a good running game. Giddings runs the triple option and MIGHT throw the ball once or twice per game. When you look at the talent level of each team and their execution on the field, Friendswood is clearly better.
Summed up nicely Griff. FWD did not play their best, but I personally think that is more due to WOS than to our failings. I think WOS played outstanding and FWD managed to play just good enough to win. I do think we had a little luck go our way, but those things balance out by the end of the Season. I also agree that this is one of the rare games that both teams, after emotions have settled, can be proud of their efforts and come out a better team. After this game WOS can really know that they can beat any team they face this year. FWD learns that; (1) any team can show up and beat you if you do not absolutely bring it all every game, and (2) that we do have the intestinal fortitude to stand up and come back when knocked down. Good job Mustangs, all of em. PS. WOS, a buddy in Gilmer says they are hoping to see you again in the playoffs. Here to yall gettin to see em again, and this time, yall teach em some manners.
Thanks for the compliments. Here's to agreeing with you that we'll see Gilmer again this year. That would be a wish come true. We have to first take of business and win our district. Even before that, we have Jasper, Kirbyville, and Giddings to look forward to. This is gonna be one heck of a year to follow WO-S. With that said, I don't think we'll see a team as good as FW the rest of the year. I thought that before the season started and I'm convinced of that even more now. Best wishes for winning your district and making a deep playoff run.
-
As one of my buds said after the game, "I don't believe in moral victories, but this is one of those rare moments when I feel good after a loss." My sentiments exactly. WO-S was not expected to win, but as the game unfolded, we saw a WO-S team that was every bit as good as FW (except for the kicking game), and definitely good enough to beat them. I congratulate FW on this win. They were as good as advertised, and I was not suprised by that. I live in the Houston area and am familiar with the FW community. Coach Van Meter is a good man, a good coach, and my best wishes go out to their players and fans. WO-S has matured leaps and bounds in just three weeks and I expect we will continue to get better. This year's team is looking real good. We'll have time to develop that kicker, I'm sure. Having an open week comes at a good time. I think the players and coaches need to exhale a little after this game. We'll regroup for our next game in two weeks and march ahead toward the goal of winning district and priming for a playoff run. To be this worked up after only week 2 is cool stuff! Go Stangs!
If you were to take this thread and put it next to the thread of a certain 2A team WOS played last year it would look alot like the shoe is on the other foot with SOME of the posters... I'm referring to the refs and their excessive penalties, not stopping the clock, and the being outcoached and outplayed by a smaller school.
I did not attend the Kirbyville game, but I know what you're referring to on the posts. Your team definitely gave us a scare and coulda won that one. Looking forward to playing you again this year, and this time I won't miss it. Glad you're back in 3A.

It went from we are the bigger and better coached team to they outcoached us and there little small school (thats 3A) almost embarrased us. Come on FW WOS was all you could handle. Good thing there not 4A. Great Game WOS you did SETX proud
Oh no Hammer, but they played bad... Even though they only had 2 turnovers, both in the first half, and only 6 penalties for 50 yards and MAYBE 1 dropped pass all night. It's easy to "play bad" when your opponent has their collective foot in your rectum all night! LMFAO :D :D :D
Gas, sorry I missed the 23 page exchange fest this week. I'm now trying to make up for lost time.

Several of those on WO-S were late in the 4th Q. Crucial moments. Those hurt.
Try to argue about the roughing the passer call on number 43, ball away for at least 2 ticks no one blocking him or pushing him into the qb, and he goes after maetzolds knees. Try to argue that one! That one helped our drive very much. The pass interference was clear, the defender grabbed the reciever as he was running by him. Nice try saying you played bad, I watched the film of your hole game vs Nederland. Yall played well vs FW. Watch our game film vs Angleton and you will see we did not. Now I already said the opponent was part of it, so do not start the bashing about oh not giving us credit.
Mister, who's arguing the roughing the passer call? You got your call there, and deservedly so. Clear your head a little. Pay attention to what I'm saying...there were bad calls (and missed calls) by the refs, especially late in the game. For example...the receivers for FW pushed off A LOT throughout the night. They were not used to having CBs that could cover them. NOT ONE call was made by the refs for offensive pass interference. Bad officiating there. Also, the receiver wasn't "running by him" when the defender was BEHIND him. YOU were the one being disingenuous by saying, "believe me, we played terrible. Some of that was due to our opponent, some of it was all on us." What kind of crap is that? Talk about not giving credit. I just gave you a little sarcasm prescription by pointing out areas where we played bad. I gave your team credit. I think FW was/is an impressive team. BTW...we played better against FW than we did against Nederland. I watched film of your game with Angleton. 'Got news for you. We are not Angleton.

Rack this up to simply playing a strong opponent.
Believe us, FW played terrible! Some of that was because of the opponent, some of it was all on us!
Well, believe me, we played terrible, too. ::) The interception our QB threw into two-deep zone coverage never should have been made. No receiver in sight, and no pressure. 'Shoulda ran with it or thrown it away. Also, late in the 2nd quarter when our receiver was dashing down the sideline and had the ball stripped. I thought we would score on that drive. Every time we had the ball (with the exception of when we were pinned inside the 10), it looked as if we could score. But., like I said, we played terrible. I guess our opponent had something to do with it...maybe. :-\
As an unbiased observer I have to point out that the officiating was not as bad as some people on here are saying. There was a couple of questionable calls (both ways) but it did not change the outcome in my opinion. The interference call in the fourth quarter on WOS was definitely interference. The ball was in the air and the defender made contact, pushed, whatever you want to call it, the receiver. It did look like there should have been one or two seconds left on the clock after the last play. The worst thing about this whole game was when that official got knocked out and the WOS fans were applauding. That was inexcusable. And it wasn't just one or two people in front of me.
I will step forward and be the "some people" you're referring to. You don't have to be a neutral fan to see something wrong with an official's call. I think I'm the only one who has gone in to detail about this so far. I disagree with you on the pass interference call. The defender was BEHIND the receiver. Furthermore, the receiver pushed off the defender. If anything, they should have ruled 1) no call because the ball was uncatchable or 2) pass interference on the offense. I'm interested in seeing the stats on penalties. They were heavily weighed against WO-S, especially late in the game. As for cheering the official getting hurt...I didn't hear that. You should know there are always a few knuckleheads on every side of a game, so don't bother broad stroking "WO-S fans" into that, Mr. "unbiased observer." Where I was sitting (50 yard line), we were all wondering what happened. 'Didn't see how he got hurt.

Wow...what a game. This one had a playoff atmosphere. It was like a 15-round championship fight. To those who thought FW would blowout WO-S...much of this opinion seems to be derived from the fact that Dayton "beat" WO-S in a scrimmage + Dayton is 0-6 against FW, therefore = WO-S will lose big. That is not the right way to judge these games. It always comes down to MATCH-UPS. WO-S matched up well against FW and I knew going into this game that was the case. WO-S had an obvious speed advantage at the skill positions and it was evident all night. Also, THIS year's WO-S team has a real running game with a good O-line and a rotation of three backs that is very effective, something that has been missing for a few years. We still have big play ability, too, so that combination gave FW more than they could handle. After watching this game, I'm convinced WO-S is every bit as good as FW, and FW is impressive. FW fans, congratulations on a hard-fought win. WO-S had a legitimate shot at winning this game. The first drive WO-S had at the beginning of the second half was pivotal. We marched down the field to the 5-yard line, then have two bad snaps that put us back to the 25. We would've and should've scored there. 'Woulda changed the final score. The officiating in this game has to be pointed out. This takes nothing away from a well-played game by both teams, but the refs were terrible. The penalties were very one-sided and you can't ignore that. The pass-interference call late in the game where the WO-S player was TRAILING the receiver (he looked like the intended target) was called when, if anything, it should have been offensive pass interference or a no-call. Unbelievable. The refs allowing 2-3 seconds to tick off the clock at the end after an incomplete pass out of bounds was awful. It seems the refs were very flag-happy late in the game after the Mustangs continued to make stops on defense and it kept drives alive for FW. Also, in the first half when our QB reached the ball past the first down marker as he went out of bounds was easily a first down play. The officiating definitely had a bearing on the final outcome. Again, I take nothing from the hard-knocks play by both teams. I just hate to see officiating so much an influence on a game like this, especially when several were phantom calls.

This is nice progress after only three days of practice since the Dayton scrimmage. It also says something about how far along and how good Dayton is this year. If Garrett will maintain some poise, and get SOME pass protection, he will have a big year.
ok this is gonna sound rude but it seems like the only way to tell you guys that WOS is still a million miles ahead of Nederland! We had our worst season in about 6 years last season and easily dominated nederland last year! And say what ya'll want about the dayton scrimmage but we actually played it like a scrimmage and looked to fill holes and tried certain plays out, while dayton played it like a serious game. And i dont see how anyone can say anything bad about our defense. We have a great defense each and every year, you cant just a defense by one bad game! Once we get the right people in the right places everything will be fine! Watch!!
That's the kind of thinking that lead Mike Tyson to get whipped by Buster Douglas. You ALWAYS respect your opponent. It's a good thing the WO-S coaching staff doesn't think like you do, and I KNOW the players will be following their lead. Gasilla was on the mark - "real" Mustang fans know this will be a close game.

For what it's worth, remember that we had LCM on our pre-season schedule, but the game was dropped by LCM. Hooks has always preferred playing a tough non-district schedule.
