5.
It helps in some ways I agree and hurts in others that they play year round.  Year round basketball started in the late 80's/early 90's and has grown even more, almost to the point where it reaches all places, where it used to be just in the Big Cities.  I think it takes away from skill time, alone time in the gym, 1 on 1 play, and alot of players are focused more on their AAU team then their school team, which is a shame.  It is becoming tougher and tougher to get players to buy into the school system at most places because of AAU.  It is just like most things in life, a fine line seperates what is good and what is bad.  I believe that the focus should be on the High School and AAU second, but that is JMO.
I agree, I think the focus needs to remain on HS ball.  However, AAU can offer great competition, and it provides a forum for kids to be exposed to college scouts. IMO Coach E has developed the best of both worlds in Nederland. The summer AAU program (M.C. Flight) is made up primarily of Nederland boys within the school program. There was even a M.C. Flight 7th grade AAU team last year. This way, the AAU ball provides a direct "team" benefit to the school program.
 6. IMO,  what makes some of today's HS basketball athletes better is that they can more easily specialize in only that sport and also have opportunity to play practically year-round, starting at very young age. You can get a whole extra season in playing summer ball each year.! :)
Yeah why should anyone work to be a "complete" player anyway?? Just pick a couple of skills and work on that.  ::) :o
I assume that you are belittling my last comment.  I am all for strength training and endurance training but NOT at the cost of skill training/improvement.  If you have a player who looks like Adonis and can dunk flat footed and run the 100 yd dash in 9.5 seconds, that is great.  However, if he can't make a free throw when it matters, or doesnt know how to "take care" of the ball and not turn it over, I would gladly sacrifice some of that strength and speed for a better set of skills.  I think Larry Bird is probably a good example of what I am suggesting.
Not belittling, just some fun debate.  I agree you have to have the fundamentals, and jumping ability isn't  the first priority.  But a LOT of kids with a good skill set don't work on improving their jumping ability. I just find it very frustrating when a good athlete doesn't meet his full potential, either because he has a bad work ethic or because of a lack of appropriate guidance on how to achieve it. I believe it's the "details" that can make a good athlete a great athlete. And I agree with Dove, the athletes of yesteryear are FAR different from the athletes of today, apples and oranges.

Caught four bulls with just one rod out. Also had fun with some whiting. Left before noon. A really enjoyable day.
What's the best bait for the bull reds?
 10. I am a firm believer in appropriate weight training. Another mode of training I think is really underutilized is plyometrics. I have seen players verticals go through the roof with appropriate use of plyos.

 12. I hear there is an important game in Nederland.....8th A:  CO Wilson vs Lumberton. Lumberton beat Vidor black, Vidor black beat C.O., so if C.O. Can beat Lumberton there will be a 3 way tie for 1st place. Should be a good middle school game.
 13. I misunderstood your initial post and I truly apologize.
 14. Settle down!! Don't get your panties twisted. Read her quote above. "I know a few other parents who are big into football like me and my boys and also held thier child back". To me that sounds like she held him back for athletic purposes. I hope you are right, and I misunderstood her quote.
 15. You gotta be kidding me. YOU love football, so you held your son back a whole year hoping he would be better in football??  :o I know this happens but to all parents who do this I say "Wow you gotta be kidding me". Priorities, priorities, priorities.

 17. Good luck to this young man, in whatever sport he chooses. Some can be good athletes in multiple sports, but to reach your maximum potential you must focus solely on one, IMO.

I am getting tired of weighting, and don't think I can weight much more. As for the NBA it looks like we will have to weight a whole year. ;D
Maybe those NBA players will join some cross country teams this season.
I do know for a fact Perkins has been in the gym hittin the weights pretty regularly lately, but I can't vouch for his cross country routine.  ;)
YOu may not want to post this type of information.  If bball players are working out with cross country team after school but do not participate in any meets, that is a big no-no in the eyes of the UIL.
Just wondering why you post this, and then yourself ask me why wouldnt bballl players participate in the cross country program after school. You confusing me Nash . See, even UIL knows basketball players shouldn't run cross country!  ;D ;D
Hmmm- Let me see.  Basketball players participate in cross country practice AND meets as well.  Competition is good for them, they improve endurance, and the UIL is happy.  Excuse me, but it would seem that this conclusion is not rocket science.
I agree, it's not rocket science. Simply put, these "basketball" players are running cross country to prepare them for the cross country meets, not for basketball games. Again, sport specific training. Nash, it seems you keep making my point for me, but you simply refuse to agree with me.  ;D ;D Let me say I really have nothing against cross country running, and I know it has many benefits. Again, my point is simply that it is not the BEST mode of conditioning for BASKETBALL players.  OK, time to take break and watch OU/TU. I have enjoyed the debate maybe we can continue over on the "Weights" thread.  :)
 25. Would love to see JY move out of 4A
