In Silsbee, the basketball players that do not play football run with the Cross Country team every day after school. They also combine this with speed drills. This type of conditioning will pay off.
YOu may not want to post this type of information. If bball players are working out with cross country team after school but do not participate in any meets, that is a big no-no in the eyes of the UIL.
Just wondering why you post this, and then yourself ask me why wouldnt bballl players participate in the cross country program after school. You confusing me Nash . See, even UIL knows basketball players shouldn't run cross country! ;D ;D
You clearly understand "energy systems" and the difference between "red and white muscle fibers". However, it is obvious that what you don't understand is the UIL rules and limitations with out of season workouts. Outside of the season a coach cannot coach his kids in that sport (ex: basketball in the fall). However, a coach CAN coach his kids during the athletic period each day (in any sport all year long). We all agree that this time of year basketball players need to spend time getting in shape for their season. So, should a basketball coach use his court time during the athletic period to condition or to develop skills? The ideal answer would be both but, as we have discussed earlier strength and conditioning are a large part of a successful program and with an athletic period only being 50 minutes to 1 hour there is hardly any way to do skills, strength, and conditioning all in that time frame. So what is the best solution? Well, since cross country coincides with what is considered basketball pre-season then why wouldn't a coach have his kids be part of that program (especially if one of the basketball staff is the CC coach)where they can do their strength and conditioning after school and use the athletic period where the coach can coach them for basketball skill development?
Nash, maybe we're further apart on our opinions than I realized. You say, "we all agree this time of year the basketball players need to spend time getting in shape for the season". I believe they should already be in shape, what in the world were they doing during the summer? As far as the UIL rules, I fully understand what a coach can do with his kids in the summer, and during athletic class during preseason. I would think a good coach would have his kids fully educated on the appropriate individual off season conditioning program, one in which the coach was not involved in. Next, you ask if the coach should use his court time during preseason athletic class to condition or develop skills? This is not necessarily an either/or option. You would do both at the same time, that is the whole point of sport specific training/conditioning. I understand there is "down time" for instruction in offense, defense, press, etc., but I don't consider that skill development. And back to the cross country running, if you would otherwise be at home sitting on the couch then by all means go cross country running.
You all are far too sciency, all this talk about red and white muscle fibers and to twitch or not twitch, man we just want to put the ball in the hole more than the other team. :D
You're right! And if the bball season doesnt get here fast we are all gonna be "twitchin" ;D

They said C.O. Should have taken a knee at end of game instead of trying to score. Can you explain why Groves decided to win tonite 40 to 0. Isn't it showing a lack of sportsmanship and class to continue to score on an opponent, at any point in the game, when the outcome of the game is already decided???
When their 2nd string is in, it's not unclassy.
Just curious if Vidor agrees with that.

Nash, you and I are not as far apart as it may seem. I do not underestimate the mental aspect of the game at all, however, I believe an athlete's mental strength comes from being physically prepared. As far as the guy who believes he has fuel in the tank at the end of the game, well I agree, he probably believes that because he is physically prepared, otherwise it would be obvious he had no fuel left. And I certainly agree that cross country training develops a mental strength. And as far as cross country running better preparing someone for multiple sports, I wouldn't argue that it doesnt (I came back and added this: as long as sprint work is also included...lol), I was only arguing what was specifically best for basketball.
Talk all you want about twitches and aerobic/anerobic. The bottom line to me is the FACT that if some type of training improves a players conditioning, then he is gonna be better off toward the end of the game. If he BELIEVES he has an advantage, he WILL likely have one. At the high school level, its a different story. You cannot do what Loyola Marymount does. You have limited time and resources. You go ahead and keep your hundred yard dash champion and I will keep the 5 K guy and we will just see who has plenty of gas after running up and down the floor for 90 minutes. As for the NBA training, it is my understanding that LeBrons main method of training is Yoga. I am further guessing that Dirk Nowitzky, Paul Pierce, Tim Duncan, and Kevin Durant among others, do very little sprint training. I can remember some years ago when a tennis player named Bjorn Borg was technically incorrect in hitting the ball with an open stance. All of the "experts" pronounced this method as inefficient and ineffective. Today, EVERY player uses that method.
You say If you believe you have an advantage, you likely will. My opinion is that the better prepared athlete will have the advantage. If I believe I am faster than my opponent, am I? If I believe a can do a 360 slam dunk, can I? Don't we only wish that was true. You also mention "limited time and resources". Thank you, that is exactly my point that to be most efficient, athletes should train in a sport-specific manner.

Tamulonghorn: NBA players do not have sprinters legs because they train differently. I was comparing sprinters to long distance runners. My point to be made was specificity of training. Also whether you run a mile in 12 minutes or under 6 minutes it is still primarily an aerobic activity.....basketball is predominantly anaerobic. Again, specificity of training. Lastly, I agree 5k runners include sprint work, can you tell me why??

Basketball Conditioning "A former college basketball player shares his thoughts on conditioning" While I was playing high school basketball a team came out of nowhere in California to catch college basketball by storm. Loyola Marymount University was an amazing team to watch. I grew up in Utah and would stay up as late at night just to watch them play on television. It was a show. The thing that made them most unique was their desire to score lots of points and to put lots of shots up. They wanted to average a shot every 6 seconds. They had great players like the late Hank Gathers, Bo Kimble and a baseball player named Terrell Lowery. They would full-court press, run as fast as possible and score lots of points. They had a shooting guard named Jeff Frier and he was my idol. He was my idol because he was able to shoot whenever and wherever he wanted to. It was crazy to watch. They were coached by Paul Westhead who used to coach the Los Angeles Lakers when Magic Johnson was playing. Westhead was interviewed on ESPN and gave his secret to how his team could play this way. It was no surprise that the answer was conditioning. How he conditioned them was what set them apart from all the other Division 1 college basketball teams. Westhead described making conditioning something that wasn't associated with punishment. Instead he tied it to playing time. Nobody could play on his team if they weren't in shape. If you ever watched them you know what I'm talking about. His off-season workouts were grueling, but the players knew if they wanted to play that had they had to sacrafice. In season was just as bad, but the key to truly conditioning players is to make certain that it isn't a punishment but something that is directly tied to playing time. Nothing impresses a coach more than a player who is in shape. It shows dedication, responsibility and that the player cares about his or her basketball career. Then he focused on the conditioning not being strictly lines or ladders, but associated directly with basketball. Meaning that many of the drills for conditioning were done while backpedaling or doing defensive drills or running fast breaks. Players were asked to jump rope because of its direct correlation to basketball. I thought often about all the conditioning that I did that wasn't basketball related and it made me understand the true point behind conditioning. The best coaches I ever played for were coaches that timed drills and segments of practice and everything was done full speed or as they called it "basketball speed".
Someone mentioned to me last week that their kid participate in cross- country running as off season conditioning. Not sure of the reasoning why this is done unless it gives the players something to do while the gyms are being occupied by volleyball games and practice. I am from the school of thought that cross-country training does not adequately prepare one for basketball. Distance running uses a whole "nother" set of muscle fibers and energy than basketball.
Cross country training utilizes and conditions slow twitch muscle fibers. Fast twitch muscle fibers are utilized in sprinting, jumping, all explosive movements , etc. Just compare a long distance runner's legs to a sprinters. There is what's called "specificity of training". In other words if I want to improve my vertical I wouldn't choose seated knee extensions, I would choose an exercise that's works the muscles in the specific manner they will be needed, so I would choose jumping movements, esp. plyometrics. There is also aerobic and non-aerobic activities. Long distance running is aerobic, and believe it or not basketball is predominantly non-aerobic, short distance sprints with decreased activity in between. Yes, basketball has an aerobic component, however, my lengthy point is "specificity of training". If you are engaging in cross country running to condition yourself for basketball you most definitely will not achieve optimal results.
