  1. By focusing on just the racial aspect, the discussion becomes about whether Michael Brown’s death—or that of the other three unarmed black men who were killed by police in the U.S. within that month—is about discrimination or about police justification. Then we’ll argue about whether there isn’t just as much black-against-white racism in the U.S. as there is white-against-black. (Yes, there is. But, in general, white-against-black economically impacts the future of the black community. Black-against-white has almost no measurable social impact.) - Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

  2. Finally, your federal government has decided to help build the long awaited border fence...in Ukraine.

More than $400,000 has been allocated for razor wire to -- quote -- "defend the newly imposed borders between Ukraine's mainland and the Crimean Peninsula and to strengthen Ukraine's eastern border."

That spending is not sitting well with some.

One lawmaker tweeted -- quote -- "So Obama can give money to Ukraine to build a border fence...but can't find the money to do that here? #Unacceptable."

  3. Its getting to where football players can go to camps and 7 on 7 and get college offers. So, lets include almighty football in your equation.

Glad to hear that. I knew of both of those (camps and 7 on 7) just wasn't sure of the opportunities. Thanks for adding....so, do you agree with a potential movement of HS sports moving to a intermural type format, leaving the "high level" to club/select programs?

  4. I also Posted this in another forum....

Sports in schools, what's the main purpose anyway?

    A) Athletic Scholarship
    B ) School Pride
    C) Keep kids off the streets and in school
    D)_____________(other)

    A) Most if not all (other than football) are earned in a "club" or "select" atmosphere anyway
B ) IMO the most reasonable purpose because in most cases (other than football) it's watered down competition anyway, so it really serves no other purpose.
    C) This is a parenting issue and could be a topic of it's own (schools shouldn't be babysitters before, during, or after school)
    D) To give a person the highlight of their life, when i played ____ (fill in the blank) in high school, i was this, or I was that, and I made the All _____(fill in the blank) team....I was good man.

Moving in the direction public school intermural sports would not be a bad thing....wanna play...PAY! It's not a "right" , they don't "deserve" the opportunity, HS sports shouldn't be the highlight of your life.

What about the "poor" kids? Well, they exist in "club" or "select" sports already....fundraisers and/or sponsors pay for them to play....I would know (15 years in select sports...softball) Several kids (almost like my own) that would otherwise not have been able to attend college, have gotten scholarships, including from our select organization.

And before I get bashed - my kid is a Div I athlete....honor student. Nothing HS sports contributed to that. Did she enjoy it...absolutely! Did she learn things other than or different than her club/select program? Sure, but that's not where she got seen by her college coaches.

Point being, her personal work ethics (academics and athletics) is what gained her, her opportunity, along with exposure outside of HS sports....

Are HS sports really needed? (leave emotions out of the equations)
  5. Ahh yes, I agree.

But even in my scenario I don't think it's fair (assuming consumption means consumer goods)

Well, If it means anything other than FOOD....I'd have to agree with the tax. If you don't have money, one shouldn't be purchasing "toys" (unnecessary) items anyway.

That's part of the problem, people aren't "ENTITLED" to a certain level of life, just life itself. But this has been discussed many times on other threads....the battle of those who believe in entitlements and those who don't. OR is it...the argument of what one should be ENTITLED to.

  7. Lower and middle class families spend more on consumption as a percentage of overall income than than a wealthy family.

Example, family X makes $25,000, spends $20,000 on consumer goods (excluding tax) and with an 8% consumption tax would pay $1,600 in taxes. The tax would be 6.4% of their overall income.

Now, family Y makes $1,000,000 a year and spends $200,000 on consumer goods (excluding tax) and with an 8% would pay $16,000 in taxes. The tax would be 1.6% of their overall income.

Family X pays more as a percentage but family y pays more in absolute terms.

I should have read better the first time...."consumption tax" as in FOOD. That already isn't taxed. So, I assume TVC meant to leave it that way....if that's the case I agree, it should remain un-taxed.

  8. Across the board, black people get paid less. This is what I was talking about on another thread. You guys said that black people were treated equally.

I think you missed the point. The point being made is that democrats treat blacks more "unfairly" than the GOP...but you continue to blindly support the party of racism and sexism - DEMOCRATS.

I remember not to long ago a similar article showing the Dems also discriminate against women more than the GOP...go figure!

  9. Nash......that is a question I raised months ago........when I was in school and a young adult, there was a stigma attached to being unemployed that no one wanted to be labeled with. That has changed.....not saying it has changed for everyone but for many, they just don't care. And, in our politically correct world, we do not say anything to them because it might hurt their feelings or give them low self esteem.

I was laid off once with a 3 month old baby........I drove a beer van delivering kegs for $60/day. I worked 5 times as hard for a quarter of the money but I would not take a handout. I still believe there is work to be had if any able bodied person wants to work. It may not be that managerial position you desire but you can work.

in 2009 the company I worked for went out of business (Engineering $100K plus per yr income) For 2 years until things picked back up (I went from office to hot and cold being outside) I mowed grass...pulled weeds...landscaped..built fences, etc...cut the cable...cell phones...sold extra cars and toys to make ends meet.....YES...work is out there if you want to EARN your way.

Unless there is truly ..TRULY a disability OR senior citizen....I DESPISE welfare recipients.....

  10. Here is a thought (for all schools) why not have players pay for all of their own uniforms, insurance, etc. After all, there are several groups (non athletic of course) that already have to do that. Then we can see who puts their money where their mouth is...EDUCATION FIRST....hence the "STUDENT" athlete. All the savings can go to new computer labs, higher teachers wages, etc.

After all, isn't that what most people are complaining about with BISD. They stole from the kids, depriving them of a good education....fire the admin, not the teachers, who provide the kids with an education....

  11. cute way to answer my question is Ben qualified yes or no.

By what standards? The standards that were set by electing this president? The answer is more than qualified, since the president has been set, or in other words, the bar lowered, he is MORE than qualified.

Having said that, NO, I do not think so, IMO. I like him, I like his credentials. His education, work ethic, family value, etc....but not qualified to run this country....but hey, that hasn't stopped some people from getting elected.

  12. You never stop stop huh. I hear a lot about Obama being unqualified... Ben is seriously unqualified. Or it don't go both ways.

If Ben is seriously unqualified having run an entire medical department at one of the top hospitals in the country for many years....then yes, you are correct, running the neighborhood picnic for a few short years is seriously unqualified...I agree with you!

  13. Along this same line of discussion a question was asked of me (even with research) it was very difficult to answer, but here goes.

What is the difference in an abortion (within the legal trimester) and a person causing the death to the unborn child during the same time frame of legal abortion?

In other words why is one legal and the other potentially charged with murder of the unborn?

In my limited findings, in short, (California law) it was stated that the definition of when life began was defined differently between the 2 senerios...made no sense to me.

  14. America Is deciding to let people be who they are for the first time. This new generation (my generation) is saying no to discrimination We're saying what a person decides to do with their life is their decision. To say some is against a controlling government. They show have no problem with the government telling you who you can marry or what your allowed to do with your own body. Hmmmmm

So you agree with prostitution and polygamy?

Bingo so your not against abortion because of religious beliefs. .. It's all about the all mighty dollar

Bingo, so let us be who we want to be Christians who don't believe in abortion and don't want to pay for it.

  15. Why are you guys against the President granting amnesty to illegal immigrants ? Reagan did it.

That is the KEY word, it's you people who make it about THIS president (or race).

With that said, just because one person (president) screwed up doesn't mean it's ok. Y'all like to defend fast and furious on the same basis, Bush did it. Yes he did, but HE recognized it was a fail operation and terminated it himself. Why on earth would your savior try the same failed operation? Then to take these failures to a whole new level of FAILURE!

  16. Are all muslims radical terrorist? I bet that people thought that president Lincoln was to symathetic to blacks back in the day. Everyone was derived from the same creator, some good and some bad. how can some on this board claim to be christian and hate so many groups of people.

Not the people, the sin! When will the NON believers learn the difference. Or is it they know the difference, it just isn't to their advantage to acknowledge it...

  17. you are lying. You cant have a car that is less then 7 yrs old and receive assistance. People on TANF get about 125 per kid. The average SSI disability payment is $710/mo.

Wrong again, for a "so called" educated person you sure aren't very bright.

Fact is, the law is based on a value (currently $11,000) not year of the vehicle. Even with that the states have the flexibility to adjust that or even discard it from the formula in which deems a family eligible.

"Aligning Food Stamp Policy to TANF-MOE-funded Assistance Programs . States may now use in the Food Stamp Program the method for valuing vehicles that the state has established under a TANF/MOE-funded cash or non-cash assistance program[1] so long as it is not more restrictive than federal food stamp rules. For example, Alabama, Ohio, Kansas, Utah, and Maryland are among the states that exclude the value of all vehicles in its TANF cash assistance programs."

  18. It's rather amazing that the "race" topics have 10 times or more dialogue than this topic....the reason however is quite simple....one directs blame to others, while the other demands accountability. One finds excuses to fail, the other finds means to succeed. One turns out free loaders, the other turns out productive citizens. One votes Republican, the other votes democrat. OH, and one last note....One drives nice cars that they pay for themselves, the other drives nice cars others pay for... :D

And to respond to another comment I can not find in regards to their being people driving on "22's" in the trailer parks also....no no...trailer park folks use tire sizes, not rim sizes....so they will driving on 35's  :D
