1. Lumberton  just got even younger. Coach Gohlson just pulled up a Freshman to the varsity.  Last year this team was 10-17. If he can turn that around to 17-10 it would be a great move in the right direction. I doubt that any team in this area is working harder right now to improve. This new coach is really getting after it, with practice like we have not seen in Lumberton for a while!
2. Dang! Does this mean that HF is now the new TAPPS State Champ? Congrats! I guess Lumberton can take that title if they are able to upset HF Tuesday?   LOL
3.
Lumberton fell off after the two really good girls graduated. I forgot their names, and going by their 13-14 yr old Little Dribbler All Stars, it's going to be a while before they have the same kind of sucess.
It is deceiving because most of the better 13-14 year old girl players got out of Little Dribblers and have been playing tournament ball in Houston the past 3 years. But the main question on this thread about Jr High success not turning into high school success is a valid question. I know in Lumberton it has been due to many of the better players decided to walk away from basketball the past few years. Some played soccer, some played volleyball, some played nothing. You would have to ask the players why they left the program... My older daughter just graduated, and when she was in 7th-8th, their girls teams were undefeated in seasons and tourneys.  Last year only 2 of those 10 girls remained in the program as Seniors.  But the Lady Raiders have a new young coach this year and have more kids out this year than they have had in a while. Optimism is high that the new coach can get the program back up.  Good luck to Coach Wolf Gholson and the girls.  ( My youngest is a Freshman this year  ;D  )
4. Cathy? Is that you posting?  ;D    ( Cathy Burbank is Paiges mom.)    Vidorianplaya, you are doing her no favors! Let her game speak for itself. If she is that good this year, we will all hear soon enough.   Paige is a terrific young lady and she should have a fine Senior year. Here is wishing her the best!
5. I know she was having some injury problems early in the Summer. She is a very hard worker and a terrific young lady. I wish her the best of luck whereever she plays.
6. There are local schools that are "open campus" from what I have heard. You can pay and be accepted at that school district from outside. I am pretty sure Kountze falls in this category.
7. Lumberton hired a new girls coach. Roy "Wolf" Gholson comes from Mount Enterprise. His team this past Spring placed second in District 22 A. Went to playoffs and won first game, then lost out in the second round. Wishing you the best of luck, Coach Gholson. ( And good luck with that nickname while coaching HS girls! LOL)
8. My daughter is the one you mention as saying before the season she "was not playing." And that is not entirely true. I can only say that there is more to the story than I will go into here. Coach Hopson and Coach Wilson are both good men. I don't want to disparage either. I like both men. My daughter likes both coaches. But in this particular case, I was upset by what I saw as neither coach willing to work it out for her to play two sports. And Lumberton has a history of the same situation with other players. So I said that girls basketball and soccer don't do a good job of working it out, past and present. We'll see about the player next year. I hope the coaches are better with her than they were to my daughter. Anyone who is interested in this is and disagrees with me, is welcome to give me a call. You guys know who I am. ;D Take care all. I am done on this subject. Congrats to the Lady Raiders on a fine season. We are all proud of yall.
9. Dogbone, (whoever you are) call me and I will share the exact wording of the email. You have no idea what you are commenting on. There has been a power play in Lumberton HS between the girls basketball and soccer programs for a few years. At least since Laurie abbo and Brittany Holmes quit basketball as Freshman to play soccer. There has not been much evidence of either side "working it out". And no, the softball players do not attend every practice, according to what they tell me.
10. Hey CoachL, It is like I posted above, the basketball girls at Lumberton were not allowed to attend soccer tryouts or any soccer practices by the basketball coach, til after BB season. In emails to me from Coach Hopson, he stated pretty much what you said above. That in his opinion, the basketball girls would be so far behind learning his system of play, that it would pretty much be a waste of everyones time. I happen to strongly disagree with that opinion. Espcially when these girls have played the game for 11 years already. But it is odd that the softball players can attend soccer tryouts and some practice, and contribute GREATLY to the team. Doesn't that disprove the missed practice theory? My beef is that the coaches are in a power play, and the kids are the ones that are hurt.
11. Dang, I knew I would forget someone. Sorry Nessa. Last year the basketball girls were allowed to practice soccer by the bb coach(Wilson). This year, they were not. Hayley ended up having knee surgery in January anyway and could not play soccer even if she had been allowed. Coach Hop was not real big on basketball players coming over to soccer either, though. That is another topic I could talk about for a while. Maybe on another thread! Good luck to all of the young ladies in Saturdays game! Play hard, play fair, play with class! ( Or suffer the wrath of Crusty the Clown .)
12. There are quite a few! Not only from this past year, but prior years on the Fillies. Players like Brook keeper Lauren Lauher. Lauren played a couple of years with us. Great, great young lady. I wish she had stayed with club soccer. But she is devoted to tennis, I believe. But since she likes to play, is on the HS team. The Fillies players may not have played their seasons at the upper levels of "Select Soccer" competition, but they played agaist many upper level S2 teams and D1 teams in tourneys. Always were competitive, and even knocked off a few D1's over the years. They had the good fortune to be trained locally by some of the best trainers around. Guys like Jorge Cruz, Graham Harrison, and Bryan Arrendale. The training from those guys is as good as the training at big Houston clubs. Anyway, here are the local HS players that have worn the Fillies uniform. Forgive me if I leave anyone out! Westbrook- Michelle Sladaritz Bailey Goins Lauren Lauher Nederland- Lauren Washburn Austin David PNG- Breanne Martin Lumberton- Katie Barnett Kaylee Begeman Haley Corley Molly James Meg Johnston Ashley Mauer Alex Mitchell Ashley Norton Randi Paine Stephanie Williams Taryl Hamilton Also, there are some very good club players that don't play HS soccer because of their basketball duties- Taylor Sutherland- HJ( An excellent defensive midfielder that could play anywhere on the field) Hayley Miller- Lumberton (Would be a Super Gold Keeper if not for playing HS basketball.) Kaila Johnson- Kountze ( Volleyball and basketball) Brittany Best- Kountze Did I miss anyone? It has been a great ride coaching these young gals. Next year I will be coaching my younger daughters team in BYSC. Mostly Lumberton high school players again in the U-15 to U-19 age group. Coach W
13. Just to clarify here. Several of the Lumberton players are Div 1 level, and all are Super 2 level. But chose not to play up because of a variety of reasons. Playing other sports, distance to games, having a life outside soccer are a few. But I promise you that they can play the game. (Same can be said for other local players.) Just because a player is not playing in the ELITE LEVELS OF HIGH DOLLAR SOCCER does not mean they are slow and stout. What an idiotic statement. For the Friendswood Bozo to post that they are slow and stout shows that he has never met any of them. For him to say they are classless for running up the score proves he how little he knows. The COACH controls the score in these things, not the players. Anyone who knows sports should know that fact. The players do what the coach tells them. GOOD LUCK IN THE PLAYOFFS TO ALL OF THE FILLIES PLAYERS ON LUMBERTON, PNG, NEDERLAND, AND WESTBROOK- Coach W
14. OOPS! That score is reversed. Lumberton won two games this week vs HF by one point each time.
15. If anyone entering a high school girls team in the Lamar Team Camp (Aug 1-3) needs players, give me a call. I did not have enough to form an entire team. Willie Miller 751-6454 hm 781-2058 cell
16. Looking at the schedule, Ozen girls come to play at Lumberton tonight in soccer... ;D
17. Nobody touched your coach. Get YOUR facts straight. I did see a referee (not calling this game) approach and say something to your coach about sportsmanship. (or the lack thereof) I know he did not touch the coach because two police officers were standing there watching.
18. Congrats Ozen. With a minute to go, up by 30, and your coach has his starters in a full court press against the LR backups. What a way to make friends.
19. How do you know that has not already been done? Maybe more than once? The thread starter asked for opinions about what was going on. There has been some good honest discourse here about the subject. (Other than a few inserts from some posters that are not close to the situation.) This is not a coaching witch hunt. It is a head scratcher.
20. How did OF do against Sulphur? I believe OF got beat by them, right?. The Lady Raiders beat Sulphur. See, you can play this who beats who beats who game forever. It does not prove anything. THUS my point here all along is that the Lady Raiders are CAPABLE of playing very well. But for whatever reason, are playing up and down, all year. Looking great one half, and terrible the next. If you want to discuss how fantastic OF Lady Bobs are, then start a thread that starts- THE TOUGHEST TEAM IN THE STATE. This thread was about the up and down play of Lumberton.
21. Where in my post did I say Lumberton was the same caliber as Central and Ozen? Did you even read it? I said that Lumberton is as good as OF. But OF is not in the same class as Central. Play them now, and OF loses by 39 instead of 24. The Lumberton girls played Central close in the YMBL tourney. Actually led at the half. But Central is at another level now. And Lumberton has played up and down all year. Hence this discussion thread. Orangefield? The toughest team in the toughest district in the state? And you call me a dreamer?
22. Central is the best girls team in this area. There is no shame losing to a great team. Ask your Lady Bobcats. (Central by 24 over OF) Coach Gwen Boyd coaches many of those girls in AAU, and you can tell. And actually, the Sophomores got most of the minutes in the second half last night. As far as the OF-Lumberton game, you were not there. Lumberton dominated those players you mentioned in the first half. The only way OF got back in the game was because Lumberton played the 2nd half with 4 and half players, trying to chase in a man D. Have yourself some more orange koolaid.
23. Well when ....... Ok, then here is your answer. They just aren't good enough to beat Central or Ozen or Orangefield or any other team they lost to. If they had the 2 All Staters then they probably would have beat some of those teams, they are lacking talent and you can't coach talent, so maybe he isn't the one to blame. Didn't both those girls play AAU year round? Humm dedication could be another thing lacking. . ;D Bobcat, why on earth would you say something like the above? Lacking dedication? Yes, most of this years girls did in fact play AAU in the Prime Time circuit. And they actually played pretty well. Just not "good enough" to beat Ozen or Central or Orangefield? I agree that the team has no where near the "talent" as the two Beaumont schools. But as far as the OF game went, were you there? Did you see the same game as me? If ever a game was blown by the coach, that was a prime example. Lumberton only brought 6 healthy players to the game, and one injured. Despite this, the Lady Raiders led at the half 27-10. In the 3rd quarter, starting post Hayley Miller went down with a dislocated kneecap, and one player got in foul trouble, causing the injured player to play.(bad ankle) Yet the coach made the decision to remain in a man to man instead of going to a zone with a 17 point lead, and tired players. The OF coach was subbing 5 at a time the whole game, and those Lady Bobcats always do a great job of running the heck out of the flex. Lumberton ended up losing the game by 20. Almost every point was a lay up off the flex. Never did OF show that they could bust a zone by hitting anything outside. Now you tell me. Is that type of coaching move the players fault? The point some here are making is that there have been games lost, that should have been won. The people that are watching the games,(not just parents) are shaking our heads and wondering what the heck is going on? This is a team that has good, but not great outside shooting. But seldom does their game plan involve getting the ball to the posts. Also, His players think that their coach gave up on them before the season started. Coach Wilson has been a very good coach, winning coach of the year twice in 22-4A. He is our guy and we love him. But he has not done the best job this year. He has his job cut out for him to win back the trust and confidence of his players. Someone above stated that the players need to stop whinning, and the parents need to stay out of it. I would say that this forum is the correct place to discuss this sort of thing! Coach Wilson is a big boy, and I believe he can take the heat. And finally, Bobcat, you owe the Lumberton players an apology for your remarks.
24. The above was the original post that started this thread. I could care less about what happened in years past. This years team has got to be tired of hearing about the two all staters of years past. I would like to comment on the 2007-2008 Lady Raiders team. I think that LRFAN put it out there pretty honestly. I have seen almost every game this season, and there have been several games that were lost that should have been won. It has been painful to watch sometimes. And not to pile on the coach, but I think he would be the first to admit that he has not done a great job this year. But the world is not ending, and the season is not over yet. I have faith in those kids. They are a tough bunch, and I believe that they will get at least the 3rd playoff spot. They are playing much better now than earlier in the season. And the Lady Raiders will have 3 starters back next year, including two solid post players, and a dang good shooting guard. Back to the original post- One big reason the girls basketball program is suffering is because some of the best girls basketball players to come thru the Little Dribblers, Jr High, and JV programs quit basketball and instead are playing soccer. The girls are not allowed to do both, so many choose soccer. I am sure that happens at all schools, but has not been happening at Lumberton that much til the last few years. There is strength in numbers, and the girls basketball numbers are falling the past few years. Good luck Lady Raiders, your fans and parents believe in you. You have a chance to finish strong, you just gotta find the faith in yourselves.
