here's the difference, TCU and Lamar are both D-I in basketball, that wouldnt be the case now for football would it? Thats the big difference between football and basketball is the number of D-I schools. I'm all for LU playing football again, but I think some of the names being thrown around as possible coaching candidates are way over the top and unrealistic. I'd attend some LU games depending upon work schedule and what other top 25 games are on at the same time. Maybe take a page from the old Southern Miss playbook and play some games on Thursday nights or try to?

the realistic problem with that philosophy is that if you got a D-I assistant, even if its a pay raise its a step down the coaching ladder realistically. If you are a D-I coordinator chances are your games probably half or so are on tv, so your work gets some exposure which leads to better jobs. Who is going to see LU play? The 10-12 thousand people if that who show on Saturdays???? Look at McNeese they've been a strong program in I-AA for what 10 years or so?? How many of their games get picked up by FSN southwest?? 1 if any at all. So yes, its going to have to be a JC coach or D I-AA coordinator.

some people around here really need to back away from keyboards..... listen to yourselves. Bobby Bowden???? one of the top 5 coaches in NCAA history in terms of career wins.....he's not hurting for a job or for money and not like Beaumont is a jumping metropolis. Mike Stoops? Even if he got canned at Arizona brother Bob would make him defensive coordinator again and a DC job at a top 20 school will pay as much if not more than a head coaching job at little LU. If they bring football back the coach will be an assistant from another I-AA school, a position coach from a D-I school, or someone local, its not going to be a big name. The only shot at a big name they would have would be Switzer and ONLY because of him knowing Tubbs, and Billy may be able to talk him into it for a year or 2, but even that is terribly far fetched, its not like LU is going to pony up 1 mill a year for a coach. Roc I'm guessing here probably makes 200k a year give or take for basketball, if LU brings back football the coach will be somewhere in that 200-250k pay bracket and the names some keep mentioning arent going to do it for that amount. I know the top assiatnts at UT make 300k+ per year. With all he talk about must have local kids if LU brought back football they should be checking into the coordinatiors at SHSU, SFA, Texas St, McNeese etc for their head job.

how many years has it been now that "this is the year that LU brings it all back"??? I'd like it to be better than 16-13 as much as anyone but until they prove me wrong I'm staying with the status quo, which has been .500 plus or minus 2-3 games.

it shouldnt matter if LU has 85 kids from Samoa the result on the field is what matters, not whether the kids are from WB, Ozen, Nederland, PNG etc. Now thats not to say there arent talented local kids but I dont care where someone is from only what wins on the field. And to realistically think the kids who are 3-4-5 star recruits getting offers from Big XII, SEC schools who would then play on TV week in and week out to stay home and play I-AA at Lamar is a joke.

Wildcatters opened preseason last night in Anchorage against the Alaska Aces and pulled off a 5-3 win. Marco Rosa had the hat trick for the Wildcatters capping it off with a short handed goal late in the 3rd period. The Aces had a crowd of 5,662 for a PRESEASON game and tonights rematch with the Catters is a SELL OUT in fact the Aces put 200 standing room only tickets on sale this morning. The two teams play again tonight at 10:15 our time and the can be heard or watched on the internet through the Alaska web site alaskaaces.com. Catters regular season home opener is October 27th.

which would be more important...recruiting local kids and have a below average record say 4-8 ish or recruit other players and go 8-4?

one trade to remember.... Larry Andersen to BOS for Jeff Bagwell when Bags was their #1 prospect as well and as damaged goods as Lidge is he is better then Andersen was at that time. Not saying its likely to happen, but there always a chance.

just what the Rockets need another me-first player with an attitude problem :

Brad Lidge to BOS for prospects Bubba Bell recently called up to AA from high A and local Lumberton product Clay Buchholz. Bell was hitting .370 with 22 HR and 10 SB in high A before his call up to Portland joining Buchholz who is 7-2 1.77 ERA as a starter with 116K in 86.2 IP in AA. Bell has Houston ties as well before playing college ball at Nicholls State. It's a deal you could realistically see Boston goign for since it only costs them 2 mid-level prospects both in AA right now, with Texas ties, who you could justify giving a September call up to to see what they have. Boston is said to have interest in Lidge for a while and would provide additional back up should something happen to Papelbon.

the book on how to pitch to Pence is still being written this year, he may still hit .300 for the season but the more he plays against each team I look for his average to drop in the 2nd half, not that he doesnt have tools or know how to hit but I doubt he keeps up at a .340 clip.

thus the problems start they havent even said they are bringing the program back and already talking they need more money.

and FYI did you know Lewis's dad started for Lamar in the late 70s. The name Ki Lewis ring a bell to any old fans out there. Just think of the possible lineup LU could have had with sons of former players with Rashard Lewis and Kendrick Perkins.....

I dont disagree with that, but everyone knew before he even stepped foot on campus in Austin that he was leaving after one year, I dont see rewarding that mindset.

honestly....no. While we all knew he was a great talent, we all knew he was probably a one and done for a college career and that shouldnt be rewarded.

if he had stayed 3-4 years, won a NC, or even gotten to final 4 then I'd be for it but as it is now....no

Sorry I just dont agree with this one. KD is a great player, great talent and fun to watch, but to retiren his number after playing one season? No. UT hasnt even announced plans to retire VY's number yet and they're already going to Durant, though there is some behind the scenes chatter that VY's bye week coincides with UT home for K-State this year so maybe. I like KD, but national player of the year or not, one season should not qualify for hanging your number in the rafters.

unless Barry is going to coach for say 150-200k it's not going to happen. Granted doubtful Barry needs the $$$ though. I put this on the scale of it will happen when they hold the winter olympics in Beaumont and do downhill skiiing down Calder Avenue.
