I'm afraid the Astros will make their debut in the AL much like this year in the NL. They will be at the bottom of the list... While I do like some of the youngsters y'all have pointed out, they desperately need some pitching to be able to compete. The rebuilding process does take years. I'm just hoping for more positives along the way.

Mr Buddy Garrity, I have a ticket for you. I'd love for you to join me and my wife to enjoy this ballgame. Of course it is on the PNG side. I'll even scrounge up a purple shirt for you to wear and an Indian stadium seat cushion. I'll even treat you to a chick-fil-a sandwich. I will ask that you respectfully stand whenever Cherokee is played. How about it?

Scooter, you are like a broken record. Since there are four teams from this district going to the playoffs, I'm willing to bet that PNG will be one of them. Would a friendly wager be in order? I'll bet you a platter of 50 Buffalo Wild Wings that PNG Makes the playoffs! How about it? -

There was no mention of SHSU or SFA, but included the other 3 slc schools because they have actively pursued a move to FBS conferences. Still think that a failure by LU to move up could have a negative impact on the non football sports in that the big boys will try to eliminate the smaller guys from getting a piece of the pie (money from the March Madness tournament).
They will make the SLC and similar conferences auto-play-in games.
I beg to differ. I think they will eliminate the lower tier conferences (those that play FCS football) from being in the NCAA Basketball tournament. No play in games or anything else that would give a red cent to "smaller" school conferences. Can no longer be in the "fraternity"!!!
WOW, that is extreme. The big name conferences would have to leave the NCAA to do such.
Not necessarily. They will tier it like the football. The NCAA already has tiers. They will present this as the smaller schools/conferences "water down" the tournament. I assume you understand how rich poeple operate. One of their codes is to work to keep their "club" restricted from the lower classes. If you don't have money, you can't get in the game (no matter what color. Money separates more often and more exlusively than color or ethnicity). The UT's, ND's, Alabama's, Ohio State's et al... are no different from the Rockafella's or Bill Gates and Warrren Buffet. They operate just the same. With money comes power.
As much as I want to disagree with your post... I can't. Money is what separates the winning schools from the others, be it in football, basketball, academics or anything else. Money doesn't guarantee success, but the successful programs all have money...I guess that is one reason I pull for the underdogs, Cinderella teams and Lamar!

I hope y'all dont take this the wrong way, but I'm not in favor of Lamar going after every player that gets booted from a D-1 university. Nothing against the players; I hope they all get their act together and maybe they deserve a second chance. I just don't like Lamar being the dog that waits for crumbs to fall from the table. I would rather see Lamar assemble a first rate coaching staff, recruit the best players they can (focusing on local talent), then developing these players into a winning football team. Maybe I'm being too Pollyanna here...

Like y'all, I agree. Good trade. Lee brings nothing to the table long term, and for now he is a cash drain. Maybe the change in scenery will help him out.

Brad Mills is trying to make chicken salad out of chicken poop. He cant be expected to win with the product he has on the field.
Since the Astros are in a what you call a "rebuilding process". Is this the manager to do it with? Actually doing better then I thought so far r this year.
I agree king. I don't expect much from these Astros, but watching these youngster play is still entertaining.

Jose Altuve All Star at 22. Is he the next Craig Biggio?
shovel replied to king's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Altuve is an all-star because they need one person from the Astros to represent the team. Altuve is is a up-and-comer, but to compare him to Biggio right now is a stretch. Wishful thinking, at best. -
It looks strange seeing Stephenville and LaMarque on the 3A list. They have been atop the 4A lists for so long... I agree with y'all about WOS. They will make some noise this year as always.

My head tells me Florida, my gut says UCLA. My heart goes with Stoney Brook. After watching that incredible series against LSU, you gotta pull for these guys!

Several locals competing in state finals rodeo

This is cool! Quite a few local kids participating. Good luck to them all! I hope to see more news coverage of these events. -
Enjoy your spoils while you can Brenham Fan & Smoking Baby. Good luck to your teams and I hope you bring home some State trophy hardware to brag about. Meanwhile, Our girls beat your girls! and... Will football season ever get here??? :)

If Pujols can wait 'till next year, he can FEAST on Astros pitching...

Astros Brett Myers will be our closer now..
shovel replied to king's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
It really doesnt matter. I cant see Myers having too many leads to protect this year. -
I dont disagree with what he said, but I'm not sure he should have said it like he did. How is throwing your players under the bus a recruiting tool? If you were a star recruit considering Lamar and saw that press conference, what would you think? I am a Lamar fan and pulling for the Cards and coach Knight. I just question how trashing your current squad is going to help your current and future situations. Good discussion y'all.

Lamar loses again...SFA 62-52 in BEAUMONT
shovel replied to UNLV's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
I'm not gonna argue Coach Knights perspective, but I do wish he would find a better way to handle this. To speak poorly of his players is still a reflection of Lamar University. He could be a little more tactful, but then again, Lamar knew this when they hired him. The acorn did not fall far from the tree. -
It took me a while to get used to Milo on the radio. He has been doing it so long, I'm afraid I will miss some of those Milo-isms. From "the boarding house reach" to "whoa brother!" and especially "Holy Toledo, what a hit". Yes, Milo will be missed.

They are gonna suck this year. Last year, they were a farm team for the Phillies. I will tune in and watch the youngsters play though. Gotta give Jim Crane a chance; it will take his guys a while to get the ship righted. Not much to get excited about right now, but hope for better days ahead.
-
Crane is trying to create a little buzz and generate some interest again. I dont want to see the Astros change their name. I really dont care about the uniforms, however, I am partial to the blue & orange. I guess my favorite was the shooting star from the late 60s. I really dont like the orange rainbows from the late 70s. Those made the players look like Taco Bell employees. I guess I really dont like any of the unis since McLane took over the team either. The bottom line is even the best looking uniforms (or a name change) wont make them winners. Good, solid ballplayers will make the difference.

Astros to announce new fan friendly initiatives today
shovel replied to AggiesAreWe's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
When Drayton McLane got his new ball park, he jacked up the prices on everthing! From tickets to beer to hot dogs and everything else. Left field ticket at the 'dome was $4. Left field "Crawford boxes" were $38 then. No telling what they are now... Mr Crane has a lot of work to do. I wish he would start by fielding a competitive team! -
Good Morning Vidor Fans! Feels Good Huh!

Astros have a new owner and are moving west lads.
Guys, they weren't gonna let him own the team if he didn't agree to it. It's pretty simple why it happened lol. We don't have to like it, but in the end we may love Crane. After all, Uncle Drayton is the one who raised tickets and concessions prices, cut the team payroll in half, and sent the Astros into their demise. Who's mad about him being gone? If moving to the AL is what it will take for them to be good again, lets do it.
Good post AJ. Bud Selig is the devil. I guess we have to take the good with the bad. I'm not happy about the move to the AL. I'm not happy that McLane gutted payroll and made the Astros a minor league caliber team. I'm not happy that most of the division road games will be at 9:00 pm. I'm happy that McLane is gone. My self-imposed boycott of the Houston ballpark is over. I'm anxious to see whay Jim Crane does for the fans and team. I dont expect a winning program for a while, but I do expect some positive changes. Time will tell. -
You dance half-naked like that in Beaumont and the police will end up tazing you.
You know this how? This thread cracks me up. Smokin' Baby fantasizing about wearing a purple Indian getup. I guess that does beat wearing a chicken-in-a-tutu outfit!
