Ozen hoping man made hill will help
shovel replied to WOSgrad's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
The HILL is for real. All we need was some photos. ;D
Now I understand. I never got the "Hill is for real" all over this board last year! ;D -
When I think of the D1 players hype, I cant help but think about Dominic Merka at Crosby. This young man is a very gifted and highly recruited athlete. He had limited success at the high school level because he didnt have enough help. Football is a team sport. Remember Ivory Williams at Central? A wide reciever with world-class speed, but they couldnt get the ball to him. Football is a team sport. Brenham Fan, you are right though. It does take good coaching AND talent.

I dont care for the ported chokes. They are louder, and get dirty/sooted up on the outside due to the ports. I think I may have paid more for the ported chokes too, which would be another reason not to like them. I have a Browning skeet ported choke you can have if you want to try before you buy.

The 100 Worst Baseball Players Of All Time:
shovel replied to adminbaberuth's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Interesting article and list. I was kinda surprised to see Jose Lima on the list, though I cant argue his inclusion. "Lima Time" was still fun. While not a fan of Casey Candaele, I'd take hime over Jim Pankovits. If you dont remember, Pankovits was a Astro utility player too, backing up Bill Doran at 2B. He was used as a pinch hitter and had about the same BA as Candaele. I mostly remember him for striking out, ground outs and pop flys to end the inning. -

When Haggequist(sp?) was QB Vidor spread it out and threw the ball around. Maybe he has gone to the Slot T because he thinks that is what fits his personnel best with the talent he has had the past few seasons......Haggequist played fairly recently. I agree with bigdog, Matthews is very respected by the coaches in this area and has done a good job at Vidor. Vidor football was pretty dismal before they hired Matthews. They have a lot better program now than they did for decades before he got there. Just my two cents from an outside observer.
Coach Mathews cannot be judged by just the record of the football team. You may judge him by the overall improvement of Vidor Athletics as a whole. We may not be a juggernaut but the between the other sports be it girl's basketball or boy's baseball the programs have improved since Mathews has taken over.
I think Coach Matthews should be judged by the integrity of his program and the behavior/actions of his student athletes. Judging by the few players I have spoken with, they are very respectful young men and speak highly of Coach Matthews. The win-loss record is secondary in my book.

Ok guys, I'm on board with you now. I did misunderstand what you were saying. I do hope the defensive backfield is strong again. Dre Dunbar was a blast to watch a couple of years ago. I want to see some players like that again!
offense wont be as good.defense will be better= same as last year, which is pretty darn good!!
I cant say last years defense was good. Most of the games were won by the high powered offense. Early in the season, the defense could not make a stop. That is how Nederland beat us. We traded scores, We couldnt stop them and they stopped us enough to win. Later in the season, adjustments were made, but I cant say the defense was good. I am looking for things to be better this year though.

OK, lets say he doesnt retire. In that case, he plays a few games, gets hurt, and misses the rest of the season (like the last couple of seasons.) What is the difference?
-
OK, let the hatin begin! IMO Vidor will look much the same as they do every year. Yes they have some good quality kids coming back and coming up. They will look decent in the pre-district and give some of the district favorites and big scare. They will play hard nosed football and may even surprise someone. But when its all over they will be a couple games from where they wanted to be. Believe me when I say I'm pullin for Vidor and they are my 2nd favorite team in the area, but it will take some big changes for them to play to their full potental. Vidor will someday have to decide if they want to go the next level or not...again, JMO. Still pulling for the Bucs!
Good post wham. The same could probably be said for LCM and maybe Ozen too.
Thank you for all the awesome comments about PNG's o-line last year. I think they were the best in the district, but then again I "might" be prejudiced since my son was part of that amazing o-line ;) With the talented PNG coaching staff in place, I'm sure our o-line this year will step up and fill the shoes that my son and his teammates have left behind. ;D ;D
They WERE the best in district and maybe the best collective group to play at PNG in recent history. Watching these boys play was FUN! I'm hoping (and expect!) the OL will do well again this year.
My biggest question is are they big and MEAN like last year's line? I've seen big and sloppy lines they couldn't block anything and I've also seen small o-lines that have the best blocking technique. Hopefully, PN-G's have a great combination of both...
I have to agree. Last years line was the best I have seen at PNG. These boys have some big shoes to fill. From what I've seen & heard, though, I am not worried about the offense at all. Plenty of talent and I'm sure Coach Faircloth will have them prepared. I am curious about the defense though. New DC and a lot of new faces. Looking forward to finding out though...!

Heady Lunceford impresses all-stars
shovel replied to WOSgrad's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
My favorite memory of last year was an outstanding play Lunceford made in the Texas City game. The Indians went for a 2 point conversion after a TD. Doty threw over the middle and it got picked off by a linebacker that almost returned it for a score. Greg ran the dude down from across the field. I went nuts in the stands. I think I was the only one in my section that realized an offensive lineman was the one who ran down the interception. The Indian OL play was a joy to watch last year. I just hope they schooled the younger players that will fill their shoes this year. Good luck to Greg at Kilgore. I too, think we will see some more of him. Great kid and an impressive athlete. -
As good as Brandon and Caitlyn are on the ball field, they are even better as young adults. It has been a pleasure to watch both of them play ball and mature into the fine young man and woman they have become. They deserve this and more! Congratulations and best wishes to both of these kids and their families.

anybody giving up on our beloved Stros yet?
My hopes weren't that high to begin with so I don't have to give up on them
Amen mat! I am actually getting hopeful now that the team may be sold within a week! -
I am a new poster but not new to the site. I don't have a dog in the fights but this is what I thought about the game. I'm not sure of pitch count but I would have stayed with Stone longer as well. I was very surprised to see him get pulled. I thought he labored through what seemed like every inning. Ned hitter did a good job of working the count and getting to the pin. I haven't seen Nederland play this year but was very impressed with their pitcher and the pace which he worked. He worked ahead in the count and threw strikes. It was a good game until the 4th when the wheels came off the wagon.
Stone didnt have his normal stuff last night. He was throwing high and when he did get it down, The Dogs hit him hard. The strike zone was erratic and there were questionable calls, but that is high school baseball. A 6-run inning is tough to deal with. The Indians are a better team than their record or their play last night. The Dogs are for real. Good win for Nederland.

Pat Knight....Id Like To Play All D1's
shovel replied to KFDM COOP's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
I know y'all are skeptical, and rightfully so, BUT: I like his swagger. I want to see LU play all D-1 schools too. A win (or worse, a loss!) against a Central Nowhere State or Wossamotta U doesn't do anything for the program. Playing D-1 schools will help fill seats, win or lose. -
I hate telling people im a Astros fan. I tell them that and i get laughed at :D
I'm still an Astros, Rockets and Texans fan, BUT: I've been an Astros fan since the 60's when i was a kid. Especially during the 80's when Nolan Ryan wat pitching. I dont even want to watch them now. I hope they lose every game until Drayton McLain sells the team. Then I'll start pulling for them again. I still miss Nolan Ryan,... and the Oilers!
-
I dont know about the PNG faithful being restless, but with the talent on this team, expectations are high. I missed the game tonight, but saw the Tuesday night game. I fully expect the Indians to rebound in a big way. No telling who will win district, but PNG, Nederland, LCM and Livingston will be in the playoffs. (A bold prediction from a casual fan!)

If this is an all-Orange County team, were there no Vidor players worth a spot?

If You could complete your gun collection.

Is a gun collection truly ever complete? -
Watch out for the Houston Astros. They can compete this year.. And are looking 10X better in the future. Signed utility man Bill Hall today.. He did a terrific job in Boston last year in a similar ballpark. [Hidden Content]
Hitting the eggnog a little hard AJ? Actually, I appreciate your optimism, but I cant get on board yet. In my book, they still dont have enough quality pitching (starting or relief) to compete in Minute Maid. While adding and playing the youngsters help, they still dont have enough good bats either. I hope that I am wrong and at the end of the season you can call me out and say I told you so. I wouldnt bet on it though. The best we can hope for is that the Astros gets a buyer that wants a winner. I wont bet on that either. :(

Washington player penalized for pointing to heavens after TD
Maybe, one day, these kids will learn to return the ball to the ref after a score and quit trying to draw attention to themselves.
I think westend hit the nail on the head. Was it Bear Bryant that said "when you get in the endzone, act like you've been there before"? This is about scoring in a football GAME afterall. I think an opening prayer is much more appropriate (and meaningful) than after a score.
