1. Hey Liberty Panther fans. I have a question about one of the players. Ryan Melton is the son of an old friend of mine and I was wondering how he's doing. I tuned in some earlier in the year and he was on the offensive line. I tuned in last night and he was playing defense. And I swear I heard the announcer say they attempted a pass to him! What gives? Does he just play all positions? Or is there another Melton on the team?
2. I haven't seen Brenham either this year. Just going off scores and stats. They just present some major matchup problems for us. The one weakness of our defense is against the pass. Although it's improved, it's still the weakest part of a pretty darn good defense. Their strength is the pass. All different types of passes. Not just the quick out to a bubble screen on the sideline. But they also run well and mix it up well.

You're right about the big play makers. JD is turning out to be what we all thought he would. Fowler and Baldwin are great too. The problem is though, that Brenham will take most of the big plays away. They have seen those plays for two years now. To beat a team like Brenham I believe you're gonna have to have a ball control type offense and grind out some long drives to keep Schlottman off the field. I just don't see us outscoring them in a shootout type game.

As always, the Broncos match up better with a running team. That's why we were able to beat a real tough El Campo team last year. That and the 40 whatever yard field goal by a freshman kicker.  ;D
Sulphur Springs, Friendswood, Lake Travis, style teams always give us trouble. Course they give alot of people trouble. I've heard coach Stewart say that teaching pass defense to kids is one of the toughest things about coaching. Kids in space...tough challenge. That's what it's gonna take though. IMO
3. Broncos are looking better even though the competetion level has dropped off some (trublu is right). You can still tell that there has been some offensive improvements. I do believe they will win district unless we have some big mental lapse (or it rains like hell) in the Crosby game.

Now I'm a die-hard Bronco fan, but I still don't think this team has enough to go past the second round. The reason I say that is it looks like we have a good chance of meeting up with Brenham in the 2nd round.(As long as we both win our districts and the first round games  ;)) And while we played them tough last year, I believe Brenham has a better team than last year and the Broncos have about the same team. A little better defense, but a more inconsistent offense.

The Bronco offense relys on the big play too much. Brenham will take that away. Unless our passing game improves to where we could convert 3rd & 7 or 3rd & 8 at least 50% of the time, I don't see the Broncos moving the ball too well against a quick, stout defense. Just my opinion and I hope I'm wrong.

"taxpayer" Hum....let me think about this one...that word always comes up when it comes to school "business"...I guess that means teachers and coaches, who are taxpayers, pay themselves. Just saying. Everyone has an opinion and it's a free country. Now back to football...

I thought that's what we were doing. Or trying to do. But it turns out that it was criticizing coaches by asking when the last time we ran a trick play was. So from now on..........the hill is for reel! hehehehe Have a chili dog! hehehehe ;D

Now you guys are thinking! I like it. Seriously though, can anyone remember Stewart trying any fakes or trick plays of any kind? I can't remember any for the last several years, but considering my memory, that aint sayin much.

All I can think of is the one wher AJ would go in motion, take the pitch and throw it deep.... usually to Ronnie Powell.

Used to use it with Andrew Thomas as well, Green's Sophmore year. Effective but not usually necessary. Besides its early in the year, we are still in the front of the play book.

I would like to address Dayton fanse questioning the play calling. Nations and Krause spend countless hours developing these game plans based on the opponents defensive scheme and every week it changes. I don't pretend to know or understand everything these coaches do, but please don't question the play calling when you don't even know the game plan. Have you ever questioned a play and then 2 plays later we are in the endzone. That questionable play may have been what set it up. There are plenty of other aspects of the game to complain about and discuss without questioning our coaches.
I'll bite on this one...

Play calling is one of the first things questioned when things aren't going well and it's also one of the first things to be overlooked when you are winning big.  BUT, it's OK to question the play calling, that's one of the things that makes watching a game fun.  Just remember that this can be done without negativity and there is no need to run the coaching staff (or players) down.  With that said, players rarely play "perfect" games and coaches don't coach the "perfect" game.  Sometimes the playcalling will be botched because a human element will always exist.  Sometimes a bad play call will result in a touchdown and a great play call will result in a five yard loss.

Here are a few observations I've had over the past few years from watching the Broncos:

Short/Lateral sideline passes are not as effective against fast teams as they are against slow teams.

A zone read run play doesn't work well when your o-line is getting blown up.

If the opposing defense is blitzing, it's better to throw short or intermediate passes than long passes that depend on routes that take a long time to develop.

If a team relies on these three options in adverse game conditions they are likely to lose.

Sometimes these three options are the only options that you have and you have to dance with the one that brought you.
Once again you are right on, taking all of these things into consideration its hard to question play calling unless your team is getting blown-up. If your team is sucking, you can question play calling.
Questioning play calling just to have something to talk about is permissable, after all it is a forum. Permissable and ridiculous, I just take offense to the criticism of our coaches, especially by our own fans. That said maybe  I am just a little touchy.
Yes I think you are being a little touchy. No one is criticizing coaches. Just a few guys talking about some of our teams plays and what we would enjoy seeing on the field. Thank you for the permission to be ridiculous.

I guess I'll just join in with the 30 pages of the "hill is for real" crap or "flippin weenies" bs, instead of trying to talk football. Talk about ridiculous. ::)
6. I think fans, in a fan forum, have always and will always question play calling. It certainly doesn't mean we/I are bashing the coaches. Speaking for myself, I have always respected the coaching staff (under Stewart) at Dayton and will continue to do so, just as most Dayton fans do I'm sure. But that doesn't mean I can't pose a question on a fan forum such as; why don't they throw over the middle more, or I wonder why they don't try such and such, etc.. Just means I'm an inquiring fan.

I'll be the first to agree that fans don't always know the whole story. But to suggest that we should never question the coaching decisions or play calling is just a bit unrealistic. No matter how successful a coach or staff has been, I don't think they would ever expect to be put on some untouchable pedastal as to not ever have to answer to the fans or public, or in this case, taxpayers.

Besides, I don't recall anyone on here seriously implying that the play calling is way off. And even if they did "question the coaches" as long as it was done with some tact, I think it would be totally within their right as a fan on a fan forum website.

See there...I don't remember that one at all. Well at least that tells me that Stewart is not completely opposed to the idea.
8. I finally figured out what the Broncos need to really get the offense into high gear. A good ol' flea-flicker play! How about a halfback pass, or a throw back to the QB then a bomb. I can't remember the last time I saw a Stewart coached team run one. I take it he's not a fan of the flea-flicker. I personally just like saying it and typing it. Flea-flicker! ;D
9. Nice win Broncos. Good job by the Dayton secondary. Both of the GP offensive TD's came after turnovers by the Broncos on our end of the field. So the defense did a great job once again.

I honestly don't think the fumbling problem (4/3 again last night) can be fixed. At least not like flipping a switch anyway. From this fans perspective, it seems like it's just simple fundamentals of not wrapping up the ball with two hands before the tackle. If the skill guys haven't learned that yet, it may be too late to change bad habits. The first couple of games I thought it may be a fluke, but it's obvious now that it's a real problem. I know for a fact the coaches are doing everything they can.

Congratulations to Galena Park on a well played game. Tremedous improvement over previous years teams. Keep it up and GP will be a force in 19-A.
10. I think we all would acknowledge that GP has a better team this year. Kudos to them for that. It takes alot of hard work by the kids and coaches. Just how much better they are is the question. I'm sure they are looking forward to playing Dayton to find out themselves. But regardless of the score tomorrow, I still congratulate GP on the improvement. It's good for the kids, the school and the community. (It's where I grew up  ;)) So good luck GP but the Broncos are coming for ya!
