1. Shepherd would be doing a great thing by hiring Coach Keel.  Coach Keel was on the staff that went 7-3 and 5-5 but just so happened to be playing in the district with Jasper, Silsbee and Kirbyville.  In those 2 years Shepherd would have easily been playoff bound in 22-3A.  For some unknown reason UIL decided to make up a random district with the above 3, shepherd, coldspring and buna.  The '04 team was easily one of the best teams to come through shepherd in a long time.  They lost to silsbee 18-2 (went 3 rounds deep) Kirbyville 14-6 (went 3 rounds deep) and Jasper 34-7 (State finalists).  They had i think 2 all-state guys on that team (a RB and a LB).  The QB off that team started 3 years at Howard Payne and the really good linebacker played all 4 years at Iowa State and had several NFL tryouts.  Anyways what I am trying to say that is given the right situation Shepherd has the potential to be competitive.  I honestly believe Coach Keel gives them their best opportunity.
2. In year's past Coach Finney has ran a "small" amount of plays but just formationed the heck out of people.  If you can draw it on paper, Coach Finney has ran it.  It was not uncommon to see Maud in 5 wide on 1 play and then be in double tight wishbone the next.  He is definitely going to give people a variety of looks.  So in all seriousness you will probably see all of the above offenses that you just mentioned.
3. Thanks! Just curious because it was definitely a move done to deceive the runner, so i didn't know if that constituted a balk or not.
4. What does the pitcher's knee, if anything have to do with it?  What this particular lefty would do is bring his leg straight up and then cock his knee back "behind" the rubber, not necessarily his foot and then make the pick off move.  It was in my eyes, it was done strictly to deceive the runner, which i think is not allowed.  What should be this ruling.
5. MrUmp, At the HS level, what is the rule for a left hander on the mound making a pick off move to 1st base?  I think I know the rule but I heard a coach of the said pitcher's team say something that intrigued me and would like your take on the rule. Thanks!
6. I agree with steelercrzy in that Deweyville will be a good game for SA.  Its a game that SA SHOULD win but they are going to have to play good solid fundamental football in order to do so.  There isn't a game on the pre-season schedule that will be "easy" for SA.  Tyler-Grace is a consistently good team at the TAPPS level that is going to lack the athleticism of SA but be very good at what they do.  I've already stated what I think of Deweyville.  Garrison graduates some key players, but they are Garrison and will be rebound just fine.  Hemphill will be alot like last year (i think losing the older Twine will hurt more than some may think) but you still have to stop Justin and that is no easy task.  Tenaha is going to be young but they are not going to be short on talent.  SA is more than capable of winning every game on the pre-season schedule.  If the kids will buy into what Coach Hubbard is preaching in the off-season (and all of my reports say that they are) then this team has the potential to be special.  But all potential does is set you up for failure when you don't take that potential and work to turn it into results.
7. oo oo oo I was right! GO ME! Lets just not resort to name calling etc guys.  Both sides had very valid reasons to believe what they heard was correct.  I just had a hunch that the SA-Harmony wouldn't hold because thats like a 2.5-3 hr bus ride
8. All I'm saying falcon is that maybe it wasn't SA who backed out of the Harmony game, maybe Harmony found a game closer to home.
9. Just remember 89Falcon, things are in major flux right now with people trying to fill out schedules.  Just because you may have been told one thing on Thursday doesn't mean it held up through the weekend.  SA to Harmony would be a trek and it wouldn't be preposterous for a coach to want to get closer to home if possible
10. SA's schedule is not set in stone...I think steelercrazy may be on to something
11. Justin is a very impressive athlete! And from everything I have heard and seen in person he is an even better kid! As a football player, Justin could be a very dangerous running back or slot receiver and return guy at the college level.  Get him in space and let him go to work.  He gets to top speed faster than 98% of the people i've seen play, and he can stop on a dime.
12. newton will take jefferson to the woodshed...
13. SA wins 40-35! NW scored with 35 seconds left but could not get onside kick
14. San Augustine leads New Waverly 34-21 at the half
15.
Why has Hemphill's defense been so bad while their offense has been pretty good?  Why can't the same athletes that are successful on offense be successful on defense? It's a 2a school.  Surely their best athletes are playing on both sides of the ball?  So what's the deal?
actually Hemphill's 2 best athletes don't play a ton of defense.  If you take those two away the offense would be just as woeful as the defense...but with those 2 Hemphill has a good chance to put up alot of points.
16. Hemphill wins this one going away with a BIG point total to end the year
17. SA needs to put Groveton away early in this one...You can't let a team like Groveton hang around, especially when your playing in their stadium.  Hopefully the wolves come out and take care of business
18. HUGE win for the Wolf Pack...gotta keep it going next week though.  Can't suffer a let down or they drop themselves right back to the rest of the pack.
19. big win for Deweyville...sounds like they got after it for 4 qtrs (which I said they would have to do to have a shot in this game).  This district race is now wide-open with SA at 2-0, Corrigan-Camden, Deweyville, Hemphill and New Waverly at 1-1 and Groveton at 0-2.  Next week shall be dubbed "Seperation Week" as the 4 1-1 teams battle each other, win and you have the upper hand, lose and you've got to win out and get help most likely.
20. Gonna find out a lot about San Augustine this week as they host perennial contender Corrigan Camden, if SA wants to take a step to be a big dog they can't let this opportunity get away.  It was no fluke that San Augustine beat Deweyville either, if anything the fact that the score was that close makes it a fluke.
21. If Deweyville plays as hard as they did against San Augustine then they will have a really good chance to pull out the W
22.
@ jlc......SA has athletes every year to win year in and out.....SA does have the tendencies to squander their talent for whatever reason.  SA should be in the playoffs in football and basketball EVERY year.  They certainly have more overall athletes than Hemphill.  I know hemphill has the Twine boys but if you take the Twines out of the equation, how good would the be?  Probably be Ofer IMO.  Maybe its different now at SA. No disrespect toward anyone....just an opinion!
Yes its just a tad different...they have a new head coach  ;) Hemphill is obviously a very talented team...we just won't truly know how good they are until this district race wraps up. Just for comparison's sake here is this district through 6 games San Augustine is scoring 32 points/game (42, 28, 35, 44, 29, 12) while allowing 22 points/ game (0, 59, 0, 16, 59, 0) Hemphill is scoring 52 points/game (14, 77, 56, 60, 38, 64) while allowing 42 points/game (35, 56, 44, 64, 13, 38) Deweyville is scoring 31 points/ game (55, 26, 34, 42, 0) while allowing 11 points/game (2, 13, 13, 16, 12) Groveton is scoring 31 points/ game (13, 33, 48, 14, 42, 38) while allowing 26 points/ game (35, 0, 6, 24, 28, 64) New Waverly is scoring 17 points/game (14, 12, 27, 6, 20, 21) while allowing 26 points/game (34, 6, 14, 28, 28, 46) Corrigan Camden is scoring 33 points/game( 42, 31, 7, 44, 30, 46) while allowing 31 points/game (14, 14, 49, 32, 56, 21)
23. Deweyville is fixing to see a level of speed that no one on their schedule has shown them to this point.  San Augustine is one of the faster teams in 2a-DII East Texas...and they have some big boys up front.
24.
Yes same year.  We were the first playoff game to use the new format for overtime.  We intercepted garrisons pass and almost ended it on a pick 6.
Yes I can remember that game, that kick was something else
25.
The '96 football season we (EC) had the number 1 defense in the state and we lose by 1 in Area to Rosebud-Lott.  They jumped out to a 28-7 lead before halftime, and we come back to lose 34-33.  Our all-state kicker missed 3 xp's and a game winning attempt of 50 yards.  Can't blame the kicker though, our defense did not show up at all in the 1st quarter.  We win that game and we probably go a few more rounds because we would have played Arp next and they were a pass happy team, and we gave up 20 yards passing per game.  This was the same year that we played Deweyville in Winnie in a horrible rain storm and won 21-19.  We were #8 in state and they were #10.
Was this the same year that EC kicked the long field goal at the end to beat Garrison in the first round?
