  1. Game One Sam Houston 3, TAMUCC 0 NCAA Box Score, Play by play Game Two Sam Houston 17, TAMUCC 6 NCAA Box Score, Play by play Game Three TAMUCC 2, Sam Houston 0 NCAA Box Score, Play by play Sunday Game Three Jason Graham and Jon Kourie hit solo home runs in the first and seventh innings, respectively, to pace Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to a 2-0 victory over Sam Houston State in the final contest of a three-game Southland Conference baseball series Sunday at Don Sanders Stadium. Sam Houston State (18-9, SLC 4-2) took the series with victories on Friday and Saturday. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (15-13, SLC 2-4) got outstanding pitching from starter and game winner Matt Wilson (5-2) and reliever Trey Maldonado, who picked up the save. The pair limit Sam Houston State to five hits and struck out eight Bearkats. The Bearkats left 10 men on base. Keith Stein went 2-for-4 and Jeremy Holzbach, Heath Pugh, and Nick Zaleski each had a hit. Tim Gray (2-2) was the loser, giving up five hits and two walks while striking out four in seven innings. Saturday Game Two Have mercy! The late, great James Brown sang it and the Bearkat baseball team showed it Saturday, but not before exploding offensively in a 17-6 seven-inning victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Don Sanders Stadium. Sam Houston State (4-1 in Southland Conference play, 18-8 overall) banged out 21 hits, including eight for extra bases against four Islander pitchers. Senior Karl Krailo led the hit parade, going 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs. Three other Bearkats — Clint Mann, Keith Stein and Nick Zaleski — collected three hits apiece, while Jeremy Holzbach, Austin Boggs, Todd Sebek and Heath Pugh each had two hits. After A&M-Corpus hung five runs on the board in the top of the second off SHSU starter Jacob Howard (5-2), the Kats got untracked, scoring four runs in the second, one run in both the third and fourth frames, three more in the sixth and eight in the seventh. Mann's two-run double in the bottom of the seventh, which put the Kats ahead by more than 10 runs, brought to an end an already lengthy game that lasted just short of three hours. “We got down by five early, but we came back and scored what, 17 runs,†Krailo said after the Bearkats notched their ninth win in the last 11 games. “We've been doing that all season. If we get behind, we come back and fight. “We knew we were still in the game. We can get down by 10 and still be in the game.†After the Islanders (1-4 in SLC, 14-13 overall) sent 10 runners to the plate in the top of the second, Sam Houston put together a similar rally. Boggs and Sebek got the scoring started with back-to-back doubles. Pugh followed with an RBI single to center. With one out, Mann and Stein delivered consecutive singles, and Holzbach beat out an infield single with two outs that made it 5-4. The Bearkats tied the score in the third when Zaleski slapped a single to right to score Sebek. Stein put SHSU on top in the fourth, tripling to right-center and scoring on Bobby Verbick's groundout. Corpus' Bryan Gerondale's solo homer in the fifth knotted the score at 6, but his liner over the left-field fence also seemed to wake up the Bearkats. Zaleski started the bottom of the sixth with a solo homer, and before the inning was over, SHSU held a 9-6 lead. Verbick ripped an RBI double to left that scored Mann, and Krailo smoked a shot off third baseman Martin Parra's glove for an RBI single. “We're confident when Jacob's on the mound,†said Zaleski, who went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. “He had one rough inning when they strung together some hits, but we knew we were going to get ours. Five runs, we knew we could overcome that.†After taking a three-run lead, the Kats continued to bombard Islanders relievers Brian Anderson (1-1) and Trey Maldonado, turning what was a close game into an extended batting practice session. Krailo cranked a three-run double in the seventh, Boggs drove in a run, then Pugh and Mann drilled two-run doubles that gave the Kats the runs necessary for the umpires to call the game early due to the 10-run mercy rule. In the final two innings, SHSU scored 11 runs on 10 hits, five of them for extra bases. “We're always trying to get into a team's bullpen,†said Krailo, who has gone 5-for-7 and raised his batting average to .379 in the first two games of the weekend series. “Once you get into the bullpen, you don't know where the ballgame is going to go. “(The relievers) were just kind of throwing it up there. Their curveballs weren't breaking much and they weren't hitting the corners like the starter does.†Howard pitched six innings, allowing eight hits, two walks and five earned runs, while striking out three. Stephen Price relieved and got into a slight jam in the seventh, but Kats coach Mark Johnson elected to bring his closer, Luke Prihoda, out of the pen to stop the threat with the tying run at the plate. Prihoda struck out cleanup hitter Jason Graham with two men on base for the final out in the top of the seventh. “Howard may have had his worst outing of the year, but it's the mark of a good pitcher if he can keep you in the game without his best stuff,†Johnson said. “They are a good-hitting ballclub, and when the tying run came to the plate (in the seventh), we started thinking, who knows, it may rain tomorrow. Luke is the best guy for the job, so we brought him in.†On four pitches, Prihoda retired Graham and set up the Bearkats' biggest offensive inning. The teams conclude the weekend series today at 1 p.m. with senior righty Timothy Gray (2-1) slated to pitch for SHSU. Senior right-hander Matt Wilson (3-3) is the Islanders' likely starter. Friday Game One Sam Houston State senior Karl Krailo was sure glad to see the home-plate umpire twirl his finger and signal a home run in the first inning of Friday's game against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Krailo's classmate Jesse Marshall was even more thrilled. That early 2-0 lead on Krailo's towering fly ball that may have been foul allowed Marshall to settle in and pitch 8 1/3 innings of three-hit ball against a team that was leading the Southland Conference in hitting. Closer Luke Prihoda relieved Marshall in the ninth and nailed down his eighth save in the Bearkats' 3-0 win over the Islanders at Sanders Stadium. “I was a little antsy in the first inning, but I relaxed after we scored those two runs and started throwing my game,†said the southpaw Marshall, who improved to 5-1. “I just tried to hit my spots, and pretty much everything was working. My curveball wasn't working at first, but I felt good after Karl's home run.†With a snicker, Krailo talked about Friday's blast, his third of the season. “It might have been foul, but I'll take it,†the senior slugger said. “Those ended up being insurance runs, and you've got to take whatever you can get. “Their pitcher tried to sneak a fastball in on me. He had been consistently throwing me changeups away, and on the fastball, I just turned on it and let my hands get to work.†Krailo's high fly went over the foul pole in left field and landed on the Bearkats' softball field. But the ball was hooking down the line as soon as it left Krailo's bat. Corpus Christi coach Gene Salazar bolted out of the visitors' dugout and argued his case for a foul ball with the plate umpire, but after a brief meeting with the base umps, the original call stood. “We saw it a lot different,†Salazar said. “I didn't want to be a burden on anybody or be the bad guy, but we saw it foul. Regardless of that, their pitcher threw a gem. He kept us off balance all night, throwing his changeup away, and we were chasing. We didn't adjust. We got runners on base, but we didn't get them in. They got theirs in.†Actually, the Bearkats scored two in the first on Krailo's home run and added a single run in the second on a double by Todd Sebek, a groundout by Heath Pugh and a sacrifice fly from Nick Zaleski. After that, SHSU left six men on base and collected just six hits. Islanders left-hander Will Norman (3-4) matched Marshall from the third inning on, but the damage had already been done. Marshall walked five and struck out eight, while Norman walked two and struck out two. “This was a typical Friday night game,†Bearkats coach Mark Johnson said. “Runs were hard to come by. We hit the ball pretty good for a Friday night against a pretty good left-hander. That's one of our shortcomings. We don't have anybody on this team who can throw left-handed except Jesse Marshall, so that hurts us, especially our switch hitters. “I told the guys before the game, they better play good defense. Jesse had to pitch out of a couple of jams, and I thought we made some nice defensive plays. (Austin) Boggs and (Jeremy) Holzbach made some good plays in the infield, and we made a couple of nice plays in the outfield.†SHSU improved to 3-1 in SLC play and 17-8 on the season, while A&M-Corpus fell to 1-3 and 14-12. Led by Boggs, Krailo, Keith Stein and Todd Sebek, who had two hits each, the Bearkats collected 10 hits off Norman. Trae Williams, Chase Williams and Martin Parra had one hit apiece for A&M-Corpus, which stranded eight runners.

  7. Sam Houston 13, Prairie View 0 March 20, 2007 NCAA Box Score, Play-by-play From The Huntsville Item By Tom Waddill, Sports Editor Mark Johnson summed it up nicely. Tuesday was a good day for the Bearkats. Actually, it was almost perfect. Sam Houston State pitchers Casey Springer and Jon Lindenberger came within one out of throwing a combined perfect game in a 13-0 victory over Prairie View A&M. In his first outing of the season, Springer (1-0) threw five perfect innings, retiring all 15 of the batters he faced with one strikeout. Lindenberger relieved and did not allow a baserunner until Panthers center fielder Greg Ford lashed a two-out single to right in the top of the ninth. Lindenberger, who retired 12 of the 14 batters he faced, earned his first save as a Bearkat. Led by Keith Stein, Jeremy Holzbach, Heath Pugh and Nick Zaleski, the Bearkats (16-8) banged out 17 hits against five Prairie View pitchers. Stein, Holzbach and Zaleski had three hits each and combined for seven RBIs. Pugh added a pair of hits and scored three runs. And defensively, SHSU was superb. Stein and Todd Sebek made a few terrific grabs in the outfield for the Bearkats, while Clint Mann, Jamie Rolmeier and Holzbach turned in some outstanding plays in the infield that kept the no-hitter intact for 8 2/3 innings. “Casey was really impressive,†Johnson said, “and Lindenberger threw lots of hard stuff — unhittable stuff. It was a great day for the Bearkats. “We hit the ball, made some good defensive plays and got two outs in the ninth with a perfect game going. To be disappointed about not getting the perfect game tonight would be pretty short-sighted. That's not a bad ballclub. They're 16-8 and they're 6-0 in the SWAC. They've beaten some good ballclubs.†Again, Johnson was correct. The Prairie View team (16-9) that came to Don Sanders Stadium on Tuesday is a far cry from Panther teams of the past. Last season, Prairie View went 33-22 and won the Southwestern Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament titles. In the postseason, the Panthers nearly upset top-ranked Rice in the opening round of the NCAA regional in Houston. On Tuesday, Springer and Lindenberger dominated pretty much the same lineup that lost a heartbreaker to the Owls 6-5 last June. “Jon pitched well and our defense did great,†Springer said humbly. “The defense needs to be congratulated. It would be different if Jon and I had punched out 26 or 27 guys, but it was our defense that really shined tonight. We also are hitting the ball really well. The guys are finding their swings and our pitching staff seems to be getting in a groove. “Really, I just threw strikes and let my defense work tonight. They did a masterful job.†The Bearkats scored a pair of runs in the first inning. Coming off a sizzling weekend in which he went 7-for-11 with three home runs and 12 RBIs in three games, junior Bobby Verbick crashed an RBI double off the center-field fence to get the rout started. Holzbach added an RBI single in the first. SHSU added single runs in the second, third and sixth innings. The Kats turned a 5-0 contest into a laugher when they hung four runs on the board in both the seventh and eighth innings. Austin Boggs delivered a two-run double, while Zaleski plated another run in the seventh with a double to right. Tyson Mire had an RBI single in the eighth and Zaleski drove in three more with his second double in as many innings. “Everything feels like it's really starting to click,†said Zaleski. “Everybody's doing their part. We're playing small ball with bunts and hit and runs, and we're doing all the little parts of the game well.†The Kats are also hitting a ton. They brought a .326 team batting average into Tuesday's game, and by the end of the night, they were hitting .331 as a unit. SHSU has scored 198 runs in its first 24 games. That's an average of 8.25 runs per game. “We're a great hitting ballclub this year, one through nine,†Zaleski said. “Even the guys on the bench can really hit the ball. “This is great. I love it.†The Bearkats will try to make it four wins in a row when Texas A&M-Corpus Christi comes to Huntsville on Friday to start a three-game Southland Conference series. First pitch on Friday night is scheduled for 6:30.

  13. Sam Houston wins two of three in Central Arkansas series Bobby Verbick March 16-18, 2007 GAME THREE - Sam Houston 15, Central Arkansas 6 NCAA BOX SCORE, PLAY-BY-PLAY CONWAY, Ark.-- Junior designated hitter Bobby Verbick had five hits and eight RBIs in leading the Sam Houston State Bearkats to a 15-6 victory over the University of Central Arkansas Bears in their Southland Conference series finale. Verbick, who hit for the cycle Sunday and also had two home runs on Saturday, had four RBI in the first two innings as the Bearkats (15-8, 2-1) went up 5-0 after two innings. He had a two-run triple in the first and added a two-run double in the second. A two-run single in the fourth gave Verbick six RBI and keyed a six-run inning that gave SHSU an 11-0 lead. For the three-game series, Verbick went 7-for-11 for a .636 batting average and 12 runs batted in. The Bears, who managed only one hit through the first five innings, put up six runs in the sixth. Matt Warren doubled down the right-field line for the first run and Derrick Corso followed with a similar shot to the same spot for another. Payton Seelinger’s sacrifice fly to right brought in the third run and an infield single by Jonathan Ashworth scored the fourth. Tye Throneberry went the opposite way for an RBI single and a run-scoring single to left-center by Kevin Rawls closed the gap to 11-6. However, the Bears left the bases loaded in that inning and again in the seventh and eighth innings. For the game, UCA stranded 12 runners. Corso went 3 for 5 for the Bears, while Rawls, Warren, Ashworth and Craig Nyborg all had two hits. Rightfielder Todd Sebek was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI for the Bearkats. SHSU starter Tim Gray (2-1) went 5.2 innings and got the win. Gray struck out three, walked two, and gave up seven hits. Grant Gatlin (0-1) got the loss for the Bears. Sam Houston State plays host to Prairie View A&M Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Don Sanders Stadium in a makeup of last Tuesday's rainout. GAME TWO - Sam Houston 8, Central Arkansas 5 NCAA BOX SCORE, PLAY-BY-PLAY CONWAY, Ark.-- The Sam Houston State Bearkats got a pair of home runs from Bobby Verbick among their 13 hits and downed the University of Central Arkansas Bears 8-5 in Southland Conference play Saturday. The loss was the first of the season at home for the Bears (9-8,1-1). SHSU improved to 14-8 and 1-1. Verbick, a junior designated hitter, hit a two-run shot to right in the fifth and added another two-run homer to left in the seventh inning. He finished 2 for 3 with four RBI. SHSU starter Jacob Howard (4-2) went seven innings for the victory and left with a 7-4 lead. Jason Prihoda relieved him in the eighth after the first two UCA batters reached. He allowed an RBI single to Graham Martin but got out of the inning, stranding two. After the Bearkats added another insurance run in the top of the ninth, Prihoda struck out the side, all looking, in the bottom of the inning to close it out for his seventh save. For UCA, senior Matt Warren led off the fourth inning with a home run, his fourth of the season. He added another RBI on a groundout in the next inning. Kevin Rawls and Graham Martin both had two hits and an RBI apiece for UCA, which managed only eight hits for the game. The teams complete the series with a 1 p.m. start on Sunday. GAME ONE - Central Arkansas 6, Sam Houston 5 NCAA BOX SCORE, PLAY-BY-PLAY CONWAY, Ark. _ Senior Matt Warren doubled to left field in the bottom of the eighth inning to score Kevin Rawls with the game-winning run in a 6-5 victory over Sam Houston State on Friday at UCA Field. The Bears (9-7, 1-0) won their first-ever Southland Conference game behind a 13-hit offensive attack and a 10-strikeout performance from junior Matt Whitaker. Whitaker (2-2) and Bobby Pritchett held the Bearkats to five hits. Jeremy Holzbach led Sam Houston State the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Five different Bears had at least two hits, with Warren contributing a game-high three RBI. Whitaker (2-2) went eight innings, allowing six hits and two earned runs. The Bears fell behind 4-0 after the Bearkats (13-8, 0-1) put up three runs in the fourth inning. Rightfielder Todd Sebek started the scoring for SHSU, singling up the middle, stealing second, then scoring on a single by Holzbach in the first inning. Karl Krailo singled in Keith Stein who got on base on an error; Bobby Verbick was hit by a pitch and later scored on an error; and Heath Puth's hit a sacrific fly to right field to score Krailo in the Kats' three-run fourth. UCA answered with a four-run fifth inning, sending eight batters to the plate. All four of the runs were unearned off starter Jesse Marshall because of a pair of errors. Warren had a two-run single to left and right fielder Derrick Corso doubled home two more. Sam Houston went back ahead 5-4 in the top of the sixth as another Holzbach single scored Austin Boggs who walked. but UCA tied it in the bottom of the frame with an RBI single by pinch-hitter Grant Gatlin. The Bearkats brought in reliever Luke Prihoda to start the eighth but Rawls greeted him with a leadoff single up the middle. A sacrifice bunt by Gatlin moved him to second. One out later, Warren laced a double to left for the game-winner. Pritchett came on to pitch the ninth, faced four batters and earned his first save. Warren, Dickson, Payton Seelinger, Jonathan Ashworth and Rawls all had two hits for the Bears. SHSU shortstop Jeremy Holzbach was the only Bearkat with multiple hits, finishing 2 for 4. Game 2 of the series will be played at 1 p.m. Saturday, followed by the series finale at 1 p.m. Sunday.

  16. Stupid program? That's funny you would say that, since you have TRIED to be a part of this "stupid program" for the last two years and you quit this year. The question is why did you quit? Let me guess, the coaches don't like you and you were going to play on one of the lower level teams instead of the varstiy. Yeah, I know, I'm right. Hey Kyle, If you want to talk trash about the Silsbee Baseball Program and Coach Trawhon, that's your right, but you could at least hide your email address so people wouldn't know who you are.
  17. Sam Houston 9, Dallas Baptist 6 Heath Pugh March 6, 2007 BOX SCORE From THE HUNTSVILLE ITEM By Tom Waddill, Sports Editor These Bearkats have a little pep in their step. On Tuesday night at Don Sanders Stadium, Sam Houston State made the most of nine hits, two steals and five Dallas Baptist errors in a 9-6 victory over the Patriots. The Bearkats (11-6) didn't hit the ball that hard. In fact, all nine of their hits were singles, but they put together a five-run third inning to take a 6-1 lead. Then after Dallas Baptist roared back to tie the game at 6, SHSU tacked on two runs in the bottom of the fifth and added an insurance run in the eighth. “I've been really pleased with our guys,†Bearkats coach Mark Johnson said. “They continue to have quality at-bats. We had two productive at-bats, a high hopper to third base in the third inning that (Nick) Zaleski gets in play and Jeremy (Holzbach) hitting one up the middle with the bases loaded.†The Patriots (8-7) made errors on both plays. Three runs scored on Zaleski's slow roller to third, and the Bearkats took the lead for good when Dallas Baptist shortstop Austin Knight could not handle the bouncer up the middle off Holzbach's bat in the bottom of the fifth. “We're trying to get them to battle to the end of every at-bat,†Johnson said. “We gave up a comfortable lead tonight, but we didn't get down. We got some help from our opponents, but I felt good that we able to scrap through it and when we got opportunities, we responded.†Stephen Spaugh pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of starter Stephen Price and picked up his first win. Closer Luke Prihoda pitched the ninth and notched his fifth save of the season. Catcher Heath Pugh led the Bearkats with a pair of hits and two RBIs. Todd Sebek and Zaleski also had two hits apiece, while Clint Mann, Bobby Verbick and Austin Boggs each added one hit. In the fifth, Boggs drew a one-out walk. Sebek singled to left and Pugh singled to right. With the bases loaded, Holzbach bounced a hot shot up the middle that ate up Knight. Two runs scored on Knight's error, and Spaugh, Jacob Howard and Prihoda pitched well enough to make that lead stand up in front of 196 fans. “I was pleased with our pitchers,†Johnson said. “Dallas Baptist is a very good offensive ballclub. Spaugh got hit around, but in a key situation (in the sixth, he gets out of a jam by striking out one of their best hitters. Price gives up an early home run, but he settled down and gave us a few good innings. “We're going to keep battling, scratching and believing.†The Bearkats added a single run in the eighth when Verbick lined a single into center to score Mann. Verbick continued swinging a sizzling bat. He brought a .478 batting average with 32 hits, eight doubles, four homers and 23 RBIs into Tuesday's game, the 17th of the season. As a team, the Bearkats are hitting .345. This weekend, SHSU hosts Louisiana Tech in a three-game series starting Friday at 6:30 p.m.
  18. I agree with you. Silsbee stranded 10 runners.
  19. What a game. Great pitching performances by Schooling and Stringer. Schooling: 6 hits 3 walks 11 K's 2 runs Stringer: 5 hits 3 walks 15 K's 1 run
  20. No, they did go to prehistoric animals. They stayed with modern farm animals.
  21. There was a team in the Woodville tournament, Woden I think, that made all types of farm animal noises. One inning it was quacking like a duck and the other it was mooing like a cow. One of the most annoying things (nothing beats softball chants) that I have ever heard.
  22. Every win is exciting!!!
  23. Schooling doesn't throw a slider.
