I know they do, like I said main thing is Gilligan he thinks he's bigger than what he is.......Gilligan doesn't like to travel to big time schools, so thats why he doesn't try to do a HOME and HOME all he's worried about is wins on his career record and won't play tough teams anymore.
The reason Gilligan made the decision not to play the "big time" schools is because THEY said they would not play Lamar in Beaumont. A&M, UT, LSU and so on were willing to have Lamar come to them for games, but were not interested in "repaying" the visit to Beaumont. When those programs decided that was the direction they wanted to go in, Gilligan decided he wasn't going to play their game. I'm not sure that the decision is the best one, but I respect him for making it. The big programs are going to draw crowds no matter who they play, hence, they are going to make a little money from the games they are hosting. Maybe not a ton of coin, but better than most schools when it comes to baseball. The only time Lamar or any other SLC school is going to make any kind of gate, and fill their stands, is when they big time schools come and play at their place. In my opinion it is a way for the big schools to control how things are done and Gilligan wasn't and still isn't willing to play the game. It is true that other SLC schools have hosted some big programs, but each deal is worked out with different coaches and there is a lot of work that goes into making a schedule. Maybe the coaches at LU are just not willing to bend as much as some of the others in the league. I wish they would because I want the bigger names on teh schedule year in and year out.

They might not win the league, but I will garuntee they don't have a year like the Cards did this year.
Ok, not last place because this conference stinks in BBall. But I bet SHSU have a very bad year and next few years.
Well, I guess you can have that opinion, but they still have the best post player in the SLC. Sam has seldom had "down" years even if they aren't the top dogs in the SLC. Marlin is gone though, so maybe things will be different...? -

Somewhat of a smallish group.
We need quality over height. Would like both but we can win in the SLC with this height. That Francesca sounds like she will be a force.
It will be interesting to see how these recruits pan out. Tidwell and co. have had some nice signing classes that have really turned the program into the top tier of the SLC and a potential NCAA tournament team. However, they have also had some great looking signings that never panned out once they got to Beaumont. My guess is that this class will have a couple of super players and a few glue players while one or two might be a bust. If that's the case, then they will be extremly good next year and will be set up to be really good in the future.

I'll believe it when I see it. Roc has had some nice players "sign" with Lamar but never show up in a Cardinals uniform. I don't think I will believe a recruiting site or any other "source" including Roc himself. I want to see it on the court. -
A basketball school. But you're 0-2 in the tourney. Neither your men or womens team can't win where it counts. HAHA...0-2.
And to be honest, since the 80's neither have we... I still don't understand why so many of our fans try to use our success from before the time when the college athletes of today were even born as a way to talk about how great we are? ???

My guess is that Rod Strickland gets the nod at DePaul. Just a guess really.

SHSU Does Right Thing, Hires from Within

If they change coaching staffs there is a possibility they lose recruits and footing with potentail spring recruits. Also, it deoends on who applied for the job. If the pool of candidated was mediocre, then it is the right choice. -

*LU vs. West Virginia Game Thread..WVU WINS!!!!!!!*
solid game for Kalis....Jenna just hit a shot by the tip of the Longhorn....West Virginia is just too big....they grab every offensive and defensive board....being down 12-0 to start the game is a little tough to comeback from but they've showed a lot of heart
Jenna is a great passer. But the rest of the team is lacking in the passing department tonight. Too many paases directly to the white jersey's or off of teammates feet. Hopefully this will be a good learnign experience for the returning players. We were never in the game tonight because or usually solid shooting was ice cold. -
I think we were all a little surprised with the poor record last year - but overall (in my opinion) the fans were happy with the turn around and the energy surrounding the team. ie, New Stadium, better more competitive games, better players, getting out in amongst the 'soccer community' This next season should hopefully see a much improved record, will be good to see more and more quality players come in rather than the rubbish Dillon had recruited. Good luck CARDINALS!
If healthy, I think you will see a big time turnaround in the level of play thins next season. The international players they had are going to pretty good, but needed that first year to make the adjustment to collegiate sports. If they continue to develop and more complimentary pieces are added they are going to be a pretty deep team that will be able to do some damage.

who would you want lamar to go after???
not saying i want roc gone but if he were to leave then who would you want(be realistic)?im going with bob marlin.pay raise, facilities, fan support and a university committed to your program all would be something he would have to consider.he may be looking for a bigger pond but he cant do anymore in huntsville than he's done.proven college coach thats not to old.give him a 10,000 seat arena, conf leading attendance for cellar dwelling team and a nice raise and see what happens.
I don't think Bob Marlin would take two seconds to even consider coming to Lamar. The facilities are not as great as most people think, the administration is a joke, and a lateral move of this scale would be career suicide. The man does have a brain in his head. -
Congrats to all selected! The fact that Tray Smith was not named Defensive Player of the Year is an ABSOLUTE JOKE. SHe had nearly double the blocks of UTA's Martin and Martin had about 15 more defensive rebounds?!?!?! I think the coaches and SID's as well as the SLC itself should be ashamed of itself for naming Shaylyn Martin defensive player of the year when Tray Smith is two times the defender she is. WHAT A JOKE!
UCA's Megan Herbert should be hands down the SLC Freshman & Player of the Year. What she's doing is unreal. Avg 22.0 ppg - 1st in SLC 14.0 rpg - 1st in SLC and Nation (Will have school record for avg in a season) .559 FG - 1st .836 FT - 1st 6.1 Off Rebs Per Game - 1st 7.9 Def Rebs Per Game - 1st 35.4 Min Per Game - 5th Posted 23 consecutive double-doubles which is the 2nd longest streak by a Division 1 player (3rd All-Time) in NCAA History behind Courtney Paris' 112 in a row. Oh and she is only one of three players to average 20 pts & 10 rebs per game in the nation.....and is the only freshman in the group.
I wouldn't have a problem with her getting Player of the YEar as well as Freshman of the Year, BUT I think Plumley will be in the mix for player of the year as well. Herbert has been a beast. I don't know how or why she ended up at UCA. She was the Arkansas Ms. Basketball last year and she ended up at UCA?????? The SEC has some pretty piss poor women's teams out there that could have used a solid basketball player. But I guess her size, or lack there of for a post player, scared them off. When the voting is tallied I think Plumley is first team all SLC & Newcomer of the Year, Tray Smith Defensive Player of the Year, Loyd and Darika Hill third team. I say third team for Loyd because she is a freshman and will get a little bit slighted. Plus, looking at history, her numbers as a freshman are not as good as Brittney Williams' numbers were her freshman season and she got third team and Freshman of the Year. Kalis Frshman Year: 13.2 points, 6.6 rebounds and is fouth in the league in shooting percentage Brittney Freshman Year: 14.4 points, 7.9 rebounds and was third in the league in shooting percentage
-
Kalis is not the best freshman in the SLC. The girl from UCA is the best freshman hands down. She leasds the league in scoring and rebounding! Kalis is very good for a freshman though.
-
Well I did forget one thing that will help us down the road. We move to the SLC East next year, and will be there for good. That should help us get a few more wins. Two years in the West, and two years of poor performance. I don't think it is by chance that this happened.
-
I don't see LU winning at Nicholls on Saturday. If they lose, they finish SLC play with a 5-11 record. (PATHETIC) Will miss the tourney for a second straight year (Pathetic). If they win they finish conference play with a 6-10 and need help for a potentail tourney berth. (Pathetic) The general theme I am getting at is that Lamar men's basketball is in a pathetic place right now. I don't really think that there is a ton of hope for the future either. I suppose the recruits coming in could be better than ever, but why inthe world would I believe that? I see more of the same next year. I guess we can get some magic on Saturday and then hope for a double dose of it in Katy...
The love fest by SLC tv on CC already has Lamar losing next week and CC winning it all.
It's hard to thow love to a team that is playing like garbage. It's true that the announcers were way too lovey for CC, but they were doing whatever they wanted to LU and it's a stretch to talk about how great a team is when they aren't playing that way. I think CC will not make the tourney finals. If LU plays the way it is capable, it should probably be LU-SFA for the fifth straight year in the SLC tourney. At least it's not a first round matchup like the previous four years.
-
Back to the topic at hand. The Lady Cards need a win or an SFA loss to garuntee at least a share of the SLC title. (LU has the tie breaker over SFA, so they would get the No. 1 seed and NIT bid) . With 7 seconds left in Nacogdoches, SFA and UCA are tied at 85, while it appears the Lady Cards are going to lose to Corpus. The Lady Cards do have some glaring weaknesses that were exposed tonight, but also have the potentail to be down right dominant when clicking on all cylinders. One thing I have noticed is that Kalis, for all the great things she is capable of doing, makes a ton of mistakes just bad decisions. She's a freshman though, so the mistakes are ones that can be fixed down the road. While I was writing this, the Ladyjacks win 88-86 so the Lady Cards must win Saturday to get the top seed.

Coach Roc makes the coaching hotseat list
LumberCard replied to UNLV's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Why??? Because he was a big name coach coming to a relatively small school. Plus he had already had a ton of success here, albeit a long time ago. I thought he would be able to recruit better talent than he was able to assemble. I agree that Roc needs a little more time to see if he can get Lamar to be a consistent threat to win the conference, year in and year out. He's done a respectable job so far, especially compared to his predecessors.
Potentially missing the SLC tourney for a second straight year is respectable? In a conference that most of the LU backers think is an inferior conference? The perenial top teams in the SLC don't miss the post season two years straight. -

Lamar beat Ark st by 21, Ark st is ranked 60 higher than LU. If we were winning hand over fist and still ranked in the mid to high 100's I would agree. But We have to take some of the blame because our basketball program is just not that good. Swallow your pride and admit it. The Southland Conference is NOT our biggest problem. Probably not even top 5 on the list.
A better conference yield better recruits. A better conference get better exposure. The SLC has one ncaa win in the last 10 years. Hang around losers makes you a loser.
If you haven't been paying attention, we are the losers holding the others in this conference back. Your words not mine. Your thinking is ridiculous. We are about to miss the conference tourney for the second straight year, unless we get a miracle finish. And your argument is that the "losers" that keep beating us are the ones holding us back? Why don't you look at budgets and the overall facilities of out athletics programs (Ty Terrell track is the biggest joke in the SLC and is worse than most high school facilities and for the product that had been placed on the field for the tenure of the staff, there is no way Vincent Beck should be as SAD as it is) and you might just realize we are way further behind than many of the "losers" in the SLC. You're so quick to blame everyone else for why Lamar is struggling, but you seem to refuse to place blame on the shoulders that deserve it the most. The admin at Lamar is a joke and thngs are not going to get better until the right decisions are being made all the way across the board and not just for one or two sports.
