  1. I just got the impression that you had a specific name that PN-G was targeting. This was what I was curious about.
  2. Baseball, don't be shy. Fill us in who you think their choice is. A good speculation every now and then keeps things interesting. [quote author=baseball25 link=topic=47211.msg489216#msg489216 date=1229581732 The masters thing is BS guys how many times do I have to say that. All big 4a and 5a say you have to have a masters but thats not the truth. I know plenty of coaches that have applied at 4a and 5a's and they tell me they all say you have to have a masters but what it comes down to is if they want Mike Long, credeur, stump, flanigan, haynes, alverez, barrow,WOS OC,ETC then they will hire him. MASTER STIPULATION IS A BUNCH OF BS so guys stop saying Long is out of the running. In my mind png already knows who they want and that guy prob has a masters so they made that a stipulation. I mean I have look on all the coaches sites, administration sites, and I still haven't found the opening yet but I might have looked over it, BUT if they haven't put it on those sites yet and made it state wide then I promise you this they have there GUY already but will go through the whole interviewing process.
  3. I hadn't really thought about it in those terms. Interesting take on the situation. Interesting to see what other people think about this.
  4. Bear, I didn't realise you were applying. Good luck. Requiring masters is a good thing, that should eliminate a bunch there. Requiring a masters is stupid and ignorant. Are you telling me that if there was a coach/AD without a masters that did a great job at another school as a coach/AD and would be the best fit to come in and get PNG back on track that you think it's a good thing you don't hire him because he doesn't have a masters? Get off your high horse. That's ridiculous! I'm fed up with this kind of talk. Look, a school district has a right, as a representative of the people, to set requirements as they deem important to them at the time. Does a masters make them a better coach? Of course not. But I bet a WHOLE BUNCH of you folks are union members, that perform a craft. Does being a union member make you a better craftsman?...NO it doesn't, regardless of what the union tells you. What that means is that you bought a book, and now you can operate under the union label. I know many very skilled craftsmen, including myself, who have turned down offers to join the union, but they aren't less of a craftsman because of it either. With that being said, there are still companies that will ONLY HIRE UNION CRAFSTMEN...PERIOD. Why? Because it's part of their requirements...PERIOD. So all you guys that are trying to portrait that PNG thinks they are holier than thou, just don't get it. It's not because they think they are better than anyone else, it's just a simple requirement. If you folks can't get past that, I feel sorry for ya. If ya'll were inteligent enought to understand all of this, you might be on a school board yourself...but you're not! Didnt buy my book, earned my book through a five year apprenticeship program. Your analogy makes no sense. Companies who hire Union craftsmen are under contracts that state they will hire union craftsmen and the union will supply those craftsmen to do the work. PNG is writing the contract for this position and can put whatever kind of language and hiring stipulations they want in that contract. Having a masters is like saying you are going to make all inteligent post on this board just because you are a moderator. You already proved that wrong. one point taken away from PNG pround and two points awarded to roughrider...lol LOL its funny how some of you have taken exception to your job being talked about yet have no problem talking about the qualifications of people who work in a field that you know nothing about. I guess if I changed my screen name to "Vince Lombardi" then I would be an expert to talk about the subject bearbryant. No maybe if you were a current or former high school football coach. Well Bear, I hope you get the PNG job. You got your masters?
  5. Well I think some tend to feel that the Masters requirement might be dropped. If so, then he has a shot. Any more thoughts on this?
  6. Look, there are better coaches and worst coaches than Long. My only contention is that the school board not go into this with a preconceived notion. Have an open mind, warmly receive all applications and if Long emerges as the best one, then great. Then all will be happy that the system works.
  7. I guess the question would be at which school would he have a better shot at winning a state title? I would think it would be harder at WB simply because of the schools out there now, especially in Houston (North Shore, Katy, etc.). Now I know there are some tough schools in 4-A. But, in my opinion, the better shot would be at PN-G. Remember, Art Briles made a name for himself in 4-A. So I really don't see a down side if he would leave WB. PN-G has new facilities. He probably would make more money as HC/AD. He would have total control as the AD. He wouldn't have to be a 3-way part of a system. Maybe being in a single system would be appealing to him. Just a thought. Yes, that is more than he currrently makes at WB. All three HS Head Coaches make the same salary. And what makes you think WB would go back to losing if Stump left? We had winning programs before he got there, and I'd venture to say that we'd continue to win if he left. The coaching makes alot of difference, but it doesn't make all the difference. shorttexas1 made alot of valid points in his post. I think the biggest reason for Stump not being interested in PN-G is the fact that both of his sons are about to be entering the program, and I believe he wants to coach them. Not that a move to PN-G wouldn't be appealing, again I think he wants to try to win a state title. Let's face it, his chances for doing so are alot better at WB.
  8. Hasn't PN-G been running Long's offense since he left?
  9. I think it all boils down to what actually happens. If he goes 0-30 in the first three years, well something will probably get done. He'll be looked hard at after 0-20. But that is the extreme. If this coach shows improvement every year then I don't see why he would not be treated any different than Burnett and stay around awhile.
  10. Interesting! You may be right. BTW, Stump has his Masters degree. NC It isn't a law, but you could not justify paying HC's salaries these days without classifying them as an administrator. The position at PNG is paying more than Burnett was making. Burnett did not have a masters degree, this is why he shared the position with Barbara Comeaux. I think a lot of schools require a masters to justify paying a coach the salaries they now make.
  11. Well, this sheds a different light on the situation. Interesting info. I think he is lucky to be in Everman and around a lot of talent. He was a loser everywhere else he went. He killed a growing Muleshoe program in the late '80s. It wasn't until David Wood got there in '97 to rebuild the program.
  12. ttt BTW, Stump has his Masters degree. NC
  13. I agree 100%. But hasn't there been schools that has done what has been described? Not saying that's its right or wrong. Just making a point that it has happened. Isn't that choice really up to the Coach that they hire? Are they really going to evaluate among themselves, or the committee, or the group of Dads, or whoever has the hiring power at PN-G, that they want to run power football so that's the only coaches they will look at? Good grief, if that's the case, no wonder the situation in PN-G is so screwed up. Why is it so hard to understand that this is an open discussion and not some attempt to influence either the powers that be at PN-G or some future head coach? I too have wondered whether a spread oriented coach or power oriented coach would be better. What difference does it make if people express their opinion here? Why does there always have to be a group of you that have no connection to the PN-G program on here running your mouths? Because you guys over there in purple and white are so jumpy now (as you illustrate) - it's fun to get under your skin. It's a forum man: when I comment you say it's running my mouth. When you comment it's pearls of wisdon. I suspect the answer lies somewhere in between. I'll quit though since it seems to upset you. Everyone just needs to do what I do when you post Tiger............ IGNORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Yes. Pop warner dads, school board members, and TAXPAYERS need to let the coach decide what offense he will run. Don't know if you know this or not but coaches have the ability to run both power, misdirection, and spread. THe coach, not the internet gurus should decide what offense best suits his team. One year it might be more power, next year more spread. Offenses are tweaked every year depending upon the players.
  14. I have a question for you, PNGFAN, or anyone that might be able to answer this question: I'm curious about something. If a Masters is not required to be an AD, then why wasn't Burnett the AD as well as the HC? Would this possibly be telling us that it is required? Just a thought. BTW, Stump has his Masters degree. NC
  15. Good point!
  16. Is there anything wrong with a school wanting to go in a certain direction, say the spread, and only interview coaches that have that experience? Just curious what this board's take on it is. Isn't that choice really up to the Coach that they hire? Are they really going to evaluate among themselves, or the committee, or the group of Dads, or whoever has the hiring power at PN-G, that they want to run power football so that's the only coaches they will look at? 17. All good points and well thought out.
  18. Could be true on both accounts.
  19. 40% was just to prove a point. And I was basically talking to you directly. Would you change jobs for this? Again, the point is everyone has their price. Will certain high schools be willing to find that lever? Some will, some won't. If PN-G can't match what some coaches are already making then it's a mute point. But it doesn't mean you can't try, right?
  20. Bear, good take on the situation. , but you have to get your team into a couple of State Title games before you are a great coach in Texas. 2-2 in the playoffs is far from it! Not necessarily true. For example... Coach takes over a perennial losing team, turns them around and they begin to go 6-4/5-5/7-3. School has marginal athletes and the coach has to scheme every single game in order to win. He gets the most from his kids and there are very few hall walkers. Thats a great coach.
  21. Excellent take on the situation. Good job.
  22. My opinion was that I could see the Gilmer coach, the Celina coach and possibly the Duncanville coach leaving. Although I must admit the last one was just a curious thought. As I've said before: with the right package anyone would leave. Let me ask you this: Would you switch jobs for 40% pay increase and added perks? It makes you think, doesn't it? It's only natural. So don't limit yourself by trying to do what some would feel impossible. Any problems with this so far? Remember, when someone knows where they are going, people will get out of the way. There are leaders and there are followers. In America I am afraid we becoming a nation of too many passive followers. The reasons you gave, was this your opinion or definite knowledge of how some of these feel? Again, these aren't the only good coaches in Texas. Mike Leach, now that's funny. Thanks for the post.
  23. This is a interesting question. What direction does PN-G want to go in? Spread or power ball? Again, interesting.
  24. Let teach you a little first. After the list appeared, for silly reasons, I offered "my opinion" that 3 would possibly be interested. Go back and read it. Now the teaching part: ONE CANNOT PROVE AN OPINION. Now when definite statements are made -- like you made -- these can be proved. Geez, I have to spend my time teaching verbiage understanding. But I am glad to do it.
