West Orange-Stark 66 Silsbee 74/FINAL
Kountzer replied to WOSgrad's topic in High School Boys Basketball
The game is being shown on you tube. No commentary. You gotta figure it out yourself. I tuned in in the 2nd qtr. I could not tell which team was which for a minute or two. WOS looks like the the more polished team to me. Silsbee making some sloppy passes. Perhaps it is a more experienced team, WOS, playing a young team, Silsbee. #. 23 for WOS is good. -
Lost a Country Great Yesterday Charlie Pride!
Kountzer replied to Realville's topic in The Locker Room
In hi sch in a PE class they had these two alpha male types that dominated the class. They were from North of Silsbee, white guys. Country and tough. I tried to stay out of their way. They were nice guys though. One of them was named Leo Spell. I forget the other guy's name. They were kinda of fond of me, at least in that class. They used to call me Charlie Pride, said I looked just like him. I didn't see it myself. -
I have been trying to understand a short video I saw last summer of two of the Jones bros. I saw it on twitter. It was a younger brother going one on one with Willie Jones Jr. in the back yard or somewhere. The younger Jones had some nice handles. I did not think it was the one on varsity, no offense. So I am guessing it is the brother playing on the JV.

David Brown, 6'8". Played in the final four tourney. RIP. Pour some drink out. Michael Dabney. You should have seen him. Words cannot describe how good he was. James Hunter. If he wasn't so good a football he would of lit up basketball. James Simmons. Simmons?? Hey, full ride scolly to Rice. Graduated magna cum laude at a tier one law school. 30 40 years practicing law. All that gotta translate to Silsbee basketball greatness some kinda way.

That 6'1" guard that could dunk. He played on HJ 's last state championship team. His name escapes me.

With due respect to distaff basketball, this was the game that should have been visually recorded. If it is your camera and equipment you can obviously record whatever you want.

I saw the Goffney Bros @ the Hester house. One went on to be a Dr., the other a lawyer. There two Sisters did the same thing. One's a Dr one is a lawyer. Mom became a judge. Serious family. -

I went to Silsbee High School for four years. I attended Lamar Fleming middle school one year. I've been around that area all my life. -

You brought back memories with that one. I played there also. My grandpaw's last name Hester, but I haven't heard of a connection. -

I grew up in Silsbee and I love my home town. My 2nd hometown is Houston, specifically 5th ward and kashmere gardens. It has been that way since before I was born. My aunt & uncle by marriage met in the halls of Wheatley. Their classmate was legendary basketball coach Jackie Carr. My cousins and a lot of my friends went to Kashmere where they played ball, marched in the marching bands, traveled with the stage band, and some teach there now. I could easily debate what you have to say, anytime, any day. -

All this has been discussed, but Wheatley, like a lot of schools is a victim of the new way to build basketball programs. Back in the day, in the 60s & 70s, all the homegrown b-ball talent stayed in 5th ward or in Kashmere gardens. Those areas were locked in by bad roads, slow mass transit, etc. Save the rest for MLK weekend or the month of February. Now, all kinds of good roads are being built. Then you got AAU spies & pimps, the internet, twitter, What's app, mass transit trains and buses to take a ball player anywhere in Houston. All the genes have moved to Northshore, Cypress, FB Brazoria counties.. You get the picture. I was talking to a young man not long ago. He said he played football for Northshore. I asked if he lived out that way. He said he has always lived in Kashmere Gardens. NS is 20 miles away. They're not the only ones, not by a long shot. So, whatever kind of team Wheatley can put on the court is almost a miracle. -
Long way for Center to travel, but it is either a blessin' or a lesson. Either way it is positive.

Dang. Do you know where in Houston? If I had known I would of tried to make it to that game.

Was this game played in Houston or Silsbee?

I was thinking if they can stream and record games other places why not in Silsbee? I didn't know til just now it was already going on. I'm guessing the UIL is allowing this because of pandemic restrictions on crowds at games. I am glad I can see the Tigers this year. It is not as good as actually being at the games. These days you take what you can see and be happy. -

I should add I tested positive that first test in March. I've taken two more test since then and both were negative. All were from the same testing place.
-
Same to you. I am glad you are okay.

I tested positive back in March. I am A+ btw. I felt a slight fever. I could feel stuff moving around near my lungs. It ached some around my heart. Basically though I had no symptoms. I am grateful to still be here just the same.

Back when Silsbee was going to SA several times in a row coach Sig quite often substituted 4 or 5 in, and 4 or 5 out. He had the players and the bench to pull that off. At one point he could pull Dontre Thomas and Gruggs out and put Trajan Harris, and Landyn Tyler in. That's a serious bench. Maybe by the playoffs Sig will have his bench trained & ready -
Houston Yates 111 Little Cypress-Mauriceville 78/FINAL

No evidence the paradigm has shifted, at least not in this game. Big ups to lcm for scheduling this game. The only way to defeat a team like Yates is to gain first hand knowledge. -

So it is Legacy. I knew some HS public or private was siphoning off the talent that usually goes to Yates. I just couldn't put a finger on who.
