  1. Those rankings are a blessing or a curse, depending on how a team uses them. The playoffs are the real test.
  2. Perhaps so. I was shocked. Usually those Dallas & Dallas area teams in that district handle those East Texas teams like Paris, and Center. Every dog has his day. (just a figure of speech Paris fans).
  3. Maybe not directly, but it factors into the subjective.
  4. TABC is right close by in Sugar Land. They heard about the city wide tournament. They get feed back from the AAU coaches. Some of them may be AAU coaches. They also know Silsbee should have been in the final rankings from last season. All of that factors in. Silsbee is a name that always shows up year in, year out. Deccade in Decade out. Besides this is just the first rankings. It will all straighten itself out. Having said that I am surprised Silsbee is ranked ahead of H-J myself. I was expecting Carter to make noise in the playoffs last season. Then they lost to Paris early. I think it was in the first round.
  5. So what is the procedures in regards to crowd size in the gymnasiums, social distance, etc? It would be ashamed to drive somewhere to see a game then get turned away.

  7. Good basketball communities go out and hire coaches they hope are good and will lead their team to success. If the coaches record lives up to it good. If it doesn't the school / community will go get someone else. Communite that want to compete with the good basketball schools, they go out and hire good coaches as well. If a young ball player doesn't start early his or her chances of becoming proficient at basketball is almost non existent. By the time a player gets to the varsity coach if he hasn't been playing basketball for years it is not going to work. The youngsters in certain ares don't have enough positive role models. So they focus in on people like LeBron James, or the high school all American on last years championship team. Some 9 year old sitting in the stands at SA at the state tournament he wants that positive acclaim. So basketball becomes a vital part of their life. Another youngster in another area has more positive role models everywhere. Maybe his parents are engineers, Doctors, etc. Maybe that kid develops a passion for a particular sport. Or maybe they play so that the resume they present to Baylor or some other prestigious school shows they participated. And that is all they want or need from playing that sport. Hope that makes sense. Going to bed.
  8. My friend and classmate Jay Hinkie was a class guy. I'll leave it at that.
  9. I saw the team before football ended, at a thanksgiving showcase. They didn't look too good. I saw them again on tv stream in the playoffs. They looked better. That was a down year, compared to the last 4 or 5 seasons before. Hopefully the big guy from Waxahachie Life is gone. I know some folks in Wax that know him, but they don't follow basketball that hard. I ran into the coach @ BT Washington the other day.. I was coming out of Esther's cajun cafe. Soul Food. But that is another story. He and other folks in H Town are expecting Silsbee to put it together in a year or so as well. Time will tell.
  10. All I know is Joseph young, if he hits 2 or 3 corner shots in that championship game, everybody would be quoting Guy Lewis just as much or more than the late J Valvano.
  11. Excellent point. A coach does not just stumble up on 760 wins. If it was that easy every coach would reach that level. A coach can't just roll out the ball and let his payers run then go into the office & mark off another day toward retirement. Sigler had to manage attitudes & egos, on & off the team. In the stands. He took what he had and adapted his talent to his system. He sells his teams on playing defense. He gets a team full of relatively short runners he gets them to trap and press. Defense is consistent. Kid rolls in with a good but streaky jump shot. Homemade shot developed on the concrete at 21st, or Waldo Matthews, 9th street, when I was a boy. Mom ain't got no $thousands to hire a shooting coach. The player hits his open shots beautiful. When he is missing, defense. Trap and press, all the way to regional finals, all the way to SA. All the way to back to back state championships. I'm watching a APSU game early in the season last year. Player on the opposing team throws a cross court pass. Jay Adams breaks on the ball and takes it the other way for a lay up. The player from the other team hadn't watched Silsbee basketball video. Probably never heard of Silsbee or their coach. Adams gets loose the rest of the season, hits jumpers. Runs beautiful lay ups. Makes a name for himself. The influence of his high school coach played a part in all that.
  12. You gotta have good athletes. You can't expect a top chef to cook a masterpiece if he only has scraps to work with. I've seen teams with lots of talent do nothing because they didn't have a good coach. I've never seen a team with no athletes do much of nothing, coach or no coach. The great coach at ucla. I don't want to blemish his accomplishments, but he was called a wizard as long as ucla was allowed to have an excessive amount of scholarships, and other things. but this is a msg board. You are allowed to be wrong.
  13. I'd put Sigler above any coach Lumberton had, has or ever will have.
  14. I remember Michael Bishop. I am a Bishop. Lot of Bishops around. You got the Bryan, Texas Bishops, the Terrell Tx Bishop (Jamie Foxx), and the Willis Bishops. There are probably some more I don't know about. Back in the day they probably all came from the same plantation. It is hard but it is real. Thanks.
  15. Raleigh Garrett.
  16. Couple of years ago, Silsbee had a home & and away series of basketball games with The Woodlands high school. I was at the game in the Woodlands and Chris & I struck up a conversation. He is the one who clued me in on his uncles and their sports accomplishments, etc. I remember both uncles. I didn't keep up with Silsbee when Chris was playing ball in both sports. I knew he was a basketball star. I used to listen to KTSU radio when he played for that University, just like I listened to his uncle, ..Garrett who played pg for Silsbee around 1969. I would listen in on Silsbee radio station KKAS. His sister was a classmate of mine. My half brother was on the basketball team with him. it was a good conversation. Nice guy.
  17. He his dad was basketball star. I dunno if he played football or not. He also has a grand uncle who got a Super Bowl ring with the steelers during the steel curtain era. He may be the only person from Silsbee that has that. And another grand uncle who was a stellar basketball pg for Silsbee circa 1969, 1970. So u are probably right. He has the dna and bloodline for both sports.
  18. You got a point. They haven't stepped on the court as varsity players yet. The fact that D Miller plays RB on the football team concerns me too about as much as it should. His choice.
  19. I'm no expert but this I know: u gotta a good inside game. So they play back. Then u hit em with a nice outside game. That is hard to defend. They play u harder, maybe put two on you then you throw dimes to your team mates. It is only video but I like what I saw.
  20. My optimism is picking up. The past is in the record books. Here comes the new.
  21. Miller, Silsbee no honorable mention?
  22. If he is related to the Bishops out of Bryan Texas he is a distant relative.
  23. I didn't say something ominous would happen on the 15th. I said certain announcements would be made. I got that information from certain thought leaders I pay attention to. One is phd Dr O or dr Olatunji. His dad is Nigerian but he is American. He podcasts occur daily on periscope, Facebook, and sometimes on you tube. There are others I follow but you are not paying attention so why bother?
  24. You tell me.
  25. Actually the 2nd return before the thousand years stops everything in it's tracks. At the 3rd return after the 1000 years they are all thrown into the lake of fire aka hell.
