  1. I've seen a lot of the great ones from Silsbee. Some I missed. 1971 Joe Price, David Matthews. Dr Larry Irvin, MD, coming off the bench. rip Before that I listened to Raleigh Garrett, Davenport, the ladies favorite Emmunual, (can't think of his name, lives out in promise land now, Tyler? ). Eddie Fobbs, James Simmons, esq. Michael Dabney did some miraculous things with a basketball. Too bad they didn't have a 3 pt line. Heard about Darryl McArthur, David Green, Chris Miller, many others. Damian Bush, the dad. The Devon McCain, Jay Adams era, that ended the frustration. Brae Bush had a big part in that. Also the Anthony Brown, Bo Shankle hoops era. Artie Shankle is another one who didn't let being short at 5'10" slow him down on the court. These are not in chronological order, just off the top of my head. I saw the girls make it to Austin and state with Brandi McCain, and the other girl who was just as good if not better. I can't recall her name just now. Can't forget the 1972 team with David Brown and James Hunter. Hunter driving down the baseline with power and grace and quickness and incredible movies. David Brown had it all. 6'8"" movies, outside shot, inside. High School all American. Played in the NCAA final four. So, If someone wants to say Brae Bush is the best all time, I have no problem with that. All time leading scorer. He had as much heart as anyone I have mentioned, and that is saying a lot.
  2. I could be wrong. I mostly focus on 4A basketball, mainly Houston, Beaumont and what I hear about the DFW region. My grasp of 5A and 6A basketball in this region is limited.
  3. Maybe Yates & Faith Family will play for the 4A championship.
  4. Bellaire was overlooked.. Somewhere else, in 4A, Paris took down Dallas Carter. I wasn't expecting that either.
  5. Two of my favorite Nuke & Brae Bush. Brae coming down court, just feeling it, putting up a shot just inside half court. Swishhh. Against Yates. Chris Martin taking the ball full court for a perfectly executed lay up vs. Carter, as a soph. in the championship game no less. It don't get no better than that imo. Best wishes to both of them on future endeavors.
  6. Thad Holden.
  7. The regionals are set. Silsbee is in. That means the Tigers are at least a top 16 team.
  8. I don't know how all that works. If a player goes for the draft but does not hire an agent he can go back to school if it does not work out. A player that is short by NBA standards needs special skills to make noise in the NBA. You needs jumping athleticism, handles to where u can go both ways, an off the dribble jump shot that is deadly, and all the nice moves going to the basketball. You have to be lighting quick as well. Even with all that you are still considered average cause there are a bunch of players that have all those skills.
  9. The hoopty (my old car) is running much better. Don't get off work until maybe 630pm. Solid 32 min drive from work to Crosby HS. Hmm. Ion k. I may watch this on TV. Best wishes for the Tigers.
  10. That is true and it is for a reason. I met BTW coach Grayland 3 or 4 years ago. He was renewing his CDL license at the DPS driver license office I work at. He kept inviting me & another coworker to come out & watch his team play. I told him I had just enough free time to watch my hometown team play. When I told him I am from Silsbee his face lit up and the convo took off. He said a lot of nice things about the Silsbee team, coach and program. I am sure he has been watching and taking notes. Whenever I go to a holiday tournament I see this guy. He is young and a hard worker. This should be a good game.
  11. Vince Grayland, the coach at BT Washington, is a nice guy as well. He came into the driver license office I work, maybe 3 or 4 years ago. Silsbee was doing great then, ranked # 1 & all that. He kept asking & inviting me to come watch BTW play. I told him I mostly follow my hometown team. When I said that team is Silsbee the convo took off from there. He said a lot of nice things about the Silsbee team & program. He is a really outgoing loquacious person. He put-in a lot of work for his team. He is definitely the man for that job. Playing in the same district with Yates is not easy. This should be a very good game.
  12. I've spoke with BTW coach Grayland a few times. He is a good person. I am glad he has that program doing positive things. The coach for HF needs to be commended as well.
  13. One thing Adams has is the it factor: he has the character, drive and determination. You can never totally rule out a player with those working for him.
  14. I love Jay Adams game. You don't see players with his skills in Silsbee very often. But being freshman of the week 9 times or so and making it to the NBA are two different things. I read where the APSU coach mentioned Ja Morant & Adams in the same paragraph. There is no comparison IMO. Morant is off the charts in terms of skill and athleticism. They got players from schools like Duke, UCLA, NC that can't make the NBA. Programs like that recruit the absolute best. Hopefully I am wrong. I don't think I am.
  15. I went to a Silsbee game last season when they played at the Woodlands. It was in January and it was kinda cold that night. I sat & talked with Chris Miller. I remember listening to him on the radio when he played for TSU. He told me about his son coming up. If he plays like his dad he will be very good. We also talked about some of the other athletes in his family tree. I think Reginald Garrett is his Uncle. He played at Waldo Matthews and at SHS. He Got two Super Bowl rings playing WR for the steel curtain era Pittsburgh Steelers. Does anyone else from Silsbee have a Super Bowl ring? I don't think so. His older brother, whose first name I can't remember played some serious pt guard for Silsbee HS back in the late 60s early 70s. I remember listening to his play on the radio as Silsbee made a run in the playoffs. I wasn't happy to see him leave the game for the last time his sr year. There is a lot of history, intelligence and athleticism in that Miller/Garrett bloodline.
  16. Chris Rossow transferred & is now playing for a D2 school in So Cal.
  17. “There are many who do not know they are fascists but will find it out when the time comes.” ― Ernest Hemingway, For Whom the Bell Tolls This may not fit here but it fits somewhere around here.
  18. For those that don't know, I grew up in Silsbee. I am a SHS alum, but I live in Houston. I am a Silsbee basketball fan to the bone as they used to say. It so happens that I see & hear what I see & hear.
  19. Ice Ice baby too cold.
  20. Yates is in a perfect location to recruit. They lose a lot of talent to private schools, but still they are in a good spot. Lots of AAU activity in that area. They got UH and TSU really close. Rice is down the street. So is St Thomas. Yates had some so so years before hiring coach Wise. Wise is the man for the plan. He knows how to go out and pull players. Maybe there is a star player from Arkansas. Comes to town for AAU. Sells his parents on being near good colleges. Sells the kid on playing for a recognized powerhouse in basketball. Bam, he has a recruit. Same for African players from the continent. Many of them value education as much as they like basketball. Yates being near those colleges doesn't hurt. Meanwhile HISD is fighting for its life. If Yates goes down maybe the whole district caves in. So the district ADs favor Yates in basketball. Booker T Wash. HS has. a nice engineering program. I've spoken to the coach there a few times. Nice guy. But to be able to parlay the engineering magnet school deal into recruiting with Yates is hard to do. I am not sure what is holding back Bellaire HS and Lamar HS. All the elites in basketball go to nearby St Johns or Episcopal. Those schools have good coaches in basketball, I guess, but none of them are on the level of coach Wise.
  21. Last time I saw a game at Lee College in Baytown Silsbee played a bi-district game vs Kashmere. Silsbee's starting back court was Elam, and Jordan Holmes.
  22. That is within range. I may show up for this game.
  23. That's what I like about Silsbee fans. Even in. a down year, when the team is not in the top 25 they find a reason to support their team.
  24. It seems awhile ago but it was last season. I had Silsbee vs WB marked as a game I could possibly make it to. I mapped it out on the laptop, set the gps but still got turned around in the neighborhood just North of the WB campus. Anyway I found the gym. That was my first time at WB, all these years. The gym seemed okay to me but I attend a handful of games a year. What do I know. I remember one play. The score was tight. Devon had the ball at the top of the key and this big post for WB was guarding him one on one. From the vantage pt. I Was at you could look down on the play really good, just back of the North backboard. Silsbee fans were yelling 'take him Devon, take him". The WB post was kind of slow and Devon got off a right hand lay up that bounced around and went in. That is my memory of the WB gym.
