Ozen QB Jimmy Brisco transferring to Legacy
Gasilla replied to WOSgrad's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Ozen has a Sophomore over there that is going to end up with that QB job anyway. His last name is James and he is a great player. Used to live in Orange, but now plays for Ozen. You will hear about him soon. -

They gave us a run for our money. We were their only loss for the season I believe. And some people say that we were one of the best teams WOS had since 87. We had awesome teams in 95 97 and 98. But we kept running into the LaMarque Cougars. They were a dynasty in the 90s. Then in 98, we played horrible against a great sislbee team and lost first round. I believe we were number 2 in state behind LaMarque or Stephenville.
It's just amazing how geography can distort perception. This gentleman is obviously from WO-S territory and remembers per his statement: ". . . we played horrible against a great Silsbee team and lost in the first round." I was one of the broadcasters at that game for the Silsbee radio station. Silsbee, indeed, played a great game - you have to to beat WO-S. But I don't remember that WO-S played that horribly. But then, I'm old and don't remember much anyway. 8). Oh yeah, we played probably one of our worst games in years. I'm not taking away Silsbee puting it to us, but If I could get the stats, we had more turnovers in that game, than the whole season combined. I want to say we had three touchdowns called back, could hold on to the football, and the weather was horrible. Took our speed away from us. Couldn't even kickoff without falling down in the mud. Trust me, I remember well.

Didnt we also miss an important xtra point in that game as well... LMAO ;D

I have to admit, when I heard "I- Formation", it made me cringe. But the more I hear about how Hodges runs his offense, the better I feel about the potential. Don't expect the oldschool "I". I think we will be OK.

Local State 7-on-7 Tournament Scores
Outside of KVille and Dayton (who I guess isn't SETX) what has anyone done since PNG in 1999 and WOS in 2000. Has anyone even made it to the semi's? I think we have some really good football around here...just nothing seems to do really good in the playoffs. So...someone make it happen this year.
WOS made the semi's in 2005. Jasper, Kirbyville and Newton have all been to the title game and semi's multiple times.

Silsbee has not made it to the regional finals since 1998, which is 13 years ago, not decades. ( to be accurate, 1 decade and 3 years ;)) It just so happens that game was a loss to LaMarque by the score of 20-14. LaMarque blocked a field goal attempt and returned it for a TD and then got the benefit of Silsbee fumbling inside the LaMarque 10 yard line twice to stop Silsbee scoring drives (one of those at the Cougar 2 yard line :'()
wasnt that the year Silsbee had that big bruiser of a RB who looked like a lineman but ran like a WR? I forget his name.
No. Silsbee had Quincy Kelly and Mark Farr as their RB's that year, both around 160-170 lbs, but very fast. Not sure of what "big" runningback you are thinking of. Can't remember any RB at Silsbee weighing over 200 lbs.
dang it, i mis-typed. i meant LB not RB.
I remember who you're talking about. Can't remember hi name, but he transferred from Kountze I believe. -

A lot of these kids are pretty close in speed though. Colin Janice(who was state runner up in the 400 meters as a soph.) is pretty fast too. He anchored the 4x100 relay when Mark Roberts was injured and did a great job. I think that's what makes Wo-s track team so good year after year. They have runners who all have state championship caliber speed. There are some J.v runners who can run with these guys too and a couple of upcoming freshman Deonte Thompson and Devin Moore who will probably be winning some state championships in track as well. They are also on the mustang football team.
Devin is fast, but he didn't run track this year. Trey Spencer, Troy Brinson and Ike are some others in that class that can fly and actually have better 40 times than D Thompson.
Yeah, Devin didn't run for the school this year, but will this upcoming season. He's doing very well for the Orange track club in his first year running track. Many of these kids have alot of speed. Yes Trey Spencer can run and can hit in football. Don't really know anything about the other two you mentioned, but I'm sure we'll be hearing from them soon. The Freshman football team will be very good.
Did this freshman team beat the undefeated PN team last year as eighth graders?? This was suppose to be a highly anticipated matchup, but I don't recall who won, or if they even played that game. Fill me in.
Are you sure it was PN that was undefeated? They were supposed to play Nederland who was very good, but the game got canceled when Reggie passed. -
Deionte Thompson and Devin Moore should be commended for trading in most of their summer fun to work hard with the Orange Track Club. They are doing a great job with that. They are also outstanding football players and what will separate them from a lot of people as they go through high school is their work ethic.
I agree, both are outstanding athletes and kids! -

Orangefield proved that if you bring something different to the table........it works.
Orangefields offense is nothing like the "I".
I know that gas......Who in 21-3A runs the "I"? Not one team. It will help WO-S. It looks like you believe that WO-S doesnt have the linemen to run the "I"......I think they do. When you ran the power sweeps last year.....did it work?
Yeah, I get what you're saying now. ;) Not that they are similar, just both different than the norm in 21-3A. Truth be told, I would love to see what WOS could do in an offense like what Orangefield runs. -
Again in 3A you don't have to average 275 across the line since you won't be facing teams with an abbundance of huge D Linemen or big LB's. A rested Defense will make more plays and lead to more points. That said, WOS has the athletes to score quickly no mater what offense they are running! The big question is will Cornell put the majority of his athletes on defense? Also from what I understand, this incoming freshman class will have the ability to be very diverse on offense. Good passing QB and several big time targets. Could see some flip floping in offensive philosophy over the next four years??
You might! They are a spread group from the ground up with a bunch of talent. -

Coach Thompson has been in this business for a long time, and if he does change the offense, it's because he thinks it will suit the players he has the best.
Completely agree. Sometimes coaches will impose a system on a team regardless of whether they have the personnel to run it successfully or not (WO-S made that mistake in 2001). I trust Coach Thompson NOT to do that. Our returning QB (Salter) is better suited for a rushing style offense as opposed to the spread. Plus, I can see the Mustangs running the spread part-time and make it all work.
Griff, from what I hear, there will be a bunch, maybe 100%, "I". I think our line is going to be much bigger this year and will be boasting the state power lifting champ. This might be the reason for the change. I don't think anyone knows better than Cornel what kind of athletes we have so I have faith that whatever offense we're in it's the best one for the team.
The 2000 offense wasn't flashy but we hung our hat on defense and field position. I think (not worth much) that since we got our rear handed to us by Ennis in the championship game, our focus had been on a high powered offense rather than the basics. I think if WOS gets back to defense first, and a ground focused offesne with the ability to throw the ball....it is a recipe for success. The game is shortened, the D isn't on the field as much; which leads to field position and points on the board.
That's all fine and dandy, but the game is only shortened by the ability to move the chains. If you don't have the line to block in the "I", then you don't get first downs. You don't get first downs and the game is only short for your offense and extra long for the defense. This conservative offense can be the worst thing possible if you don't have the hosses to line up and make it go. -

Pierce will run the 50. From what I've been able to find out, Hodges runs a bunch out of the "I". Looks like he runs about 70% of the time.
