He was a great coach, but really didn't want to make some of the tough changes when he got up in years. Cornel will. He will expect the same work ethic from his coaches that he gives and he expects from his athletes. Those who don't want to work will not be around long. On another note, while I'm sure T had a hand in it. The Superintendent was the one who actually did the re-assigning.
The varisty ball is what we play with in our district, but if you use the smaller ball that will be ok. I remember last year HF used a smaller ball, but I dont remember yall using it. Use whatevr you use in school.
Most years it's a varsity size ball. But, we may have a very small QB this yr. ;D Just making sure we could if that's what it comes to.

When our offensive line declined, so did our offense. We quit running it for a reason. I would be extremely surprised if we ran it again. Coach T was one of the main reasons we quit running it. If we are not in the spread, I would imagine it would be more of a pro style of offense similar to what we ran with Barry Norton.
Exactly, and I would be all for that. Under Barry Norton, we ran a lot of I-formation sets with sufficient passing, especially during the Eric Anderson days. Coach T said this week he wants to "run a little more." He won't insist on us being a "run at all cost" type team. I understand him to mean we'll increase the percentage of running plays compared to what we've done recently, but we won't become an archaic rushing team like the 80's Vidor squads (hopefully, we WON'T run the veer, either). With that in mind, if our returning QB is better as a runner than a passer, then don't force him to throw the ball too much. I remember in 2001 we stayed in the spread with a QB who looked totally lost in this system. He was not a good passer, but we forced him into the spread offense with too many passing plays and it stunk. That's just as bad as being primarily a running team with a front full of 170 lb lineman. We can find some balance with a running game while still using our athleticism to stretch the field. Oh yeah...and it would be a dream come true if we included a mix of passing into the middle of the field...something we've neglected for years. All in all, I trust Cornel to make it work.
I agree Griff, it's about moving the chains... not a commitment to one style or another. As long as we play to our strengths and minimize our weaknesses we will be successful. Coach T has always been about that. Honestly, I really wouldn't mind seeing us try a little of that OF offensive scheme. They don't rely on huge athletic lineman, it's more about misdirection and discipline and quickness up front. With our skill guys in that type of offense, those 25 yd runs I see OF get over and over would be 80 yd TD's. But, then you have the short drive issue again and your D is back on the field.

To run any ground oriented offense other than what Orangefield runs, you have to have the people up front to block it. We have not had that kind of personnell since the early 90's at WOS. I think it would be a mistake to scrap the spread because it gets ALL of your athletes (of which we have an abundance) involved while minimizing your lack of size/ability up front. I totally understand wanting to shorten the game and play keep away. But you can only do that in a run oriented offense by moving the sticks and if you can't do that then you can't score and you just put more pressure on your defense. Nothing worse than run, run, run, punt. Run, run, run, punt. I was watching our 1987 state title game against Rockwall a while back and I heard them say that the WOS line averaged 250 lbs... We ain't seen anything like that in years. I also know Coach T knows and understands this as well. That's why I don't think you are going to see a bunch of conservatism. More, probably, but you wont see a wholesale change, IMO. At least I hope not. IMO, the reason WOS has not seen more success the last couple of years has NOTHING to do with the type of offense or defense we run, but just not performing in the big game. Our last game the last 2 years we've had a total of 13 turnovers in those 2 games alone. You just can't win doing that.

No matter what happened before now, Colbert and crew DID do the right thing. Yes, I was worried, but I think that Dr Colbert should have won trust from everyone in the community now. I have the utmost trust in him and Mr Hill. I think we have all the right people in place now. We score with a couple of board members in the next election and we are looking good!

WOS will be there!
So we are going to cut coaches: these people are the ones that supervise your kids on those EXTRA curricular activities, so now we are going to have less people keeping up with the same amount of kids? In my opinion, this is not smart. Less people to give more attention to your child? Less people to go the extra mile for your child? I am not saying that teachers don't do the same, because i know they do. Coaches spend a whole lot of extra time with their athletes......... and a lot of times serve as more than just a coach to these kids. I just don't think that they should be the ones that get cut. That's all i am saying..... it's MY OPINION..... it doesn't have to be yours.
I agree 112%

Those taxpayers and patrons of Mustangs games, who pay Colbert's salary and will pay the salary of the new coach, have a perfect right to know who this committee is considering as the athletic director of this school district. The rumors are flying because this committee has made NOTHING known. Tho public has been given nothing to judge and see whether this committee has chosen the best candidate. I'll say this about Erick Guillory, I think he is a snake that is in on this, but at least he been willing to interact with the public on the matter. However, the committee as a whole has failed to act with the "transparency" that was promised by Mr. Colbert. Until that changes, they themselves are fostering the belief that this is not on the up and up.
There is a lot in your statement that I absolutely agree with. I think it would be nice to know who the candidates are also. It's times like this that I feel compelled to hold my tongue just because I'm running for the school board. However, that's not my style. Never has been, never will be. You having a RIGHT to know is absurd. Our only rights are found under the FOI act and no one is begrudging us that. That's like telling a cop he can't give you a ticket because you pay his salary. The public votes on the board, the board hires the Super, he recommends the AD then the board has to approve that decision. What you are wanting to do is micro-manage and that's never a good idea. Don't take what I'm saying as being on a different page as most of yall on here. I just think sometimes we think we are owed more than what we really are. We hire people to do a job. Let's let them do that job. If something is not on the up and up then there is a committee to stop it and if that doesn't happen then there is yet another line of defense and that is the school board that can also stop it. I understand the lack of confidence in the school board but if this thing goes in a different direction than we are all thinking, then there will be not only the Super, but the committee and the school board to hold accountable.
Place this post in bold letters and delete all the rest in this thread.
Well T, you and I usually agree on most things. Even now, I agree with everything you say. I don't feel like it's my "right" to know. However, when Colbert tells the media about this being a "transparent" process, then it turns out to be anything but that. It's going to give people cause for concern.
-
The reason folks are getting upset is because the decision should be an easy one and from what some of the board members are making known (or should I say "a" board member) it's not going to be so cut and dry. Some may handle that frustration differently than others, but it is a stressful stuation for those who care about the community and the kids. Not saying you don't care mustangproud, but others see it differently. That's what makes this community special, right?
-
Like Grad, I would never dessert the community that raised me. I would challenge anyone to put in as many hours as I've put in giving back to this community. If you know me, then you know it's true. However, I will say this, this decision needs to be based on merit and ability and nothing else. Cornel has proven he has the ability over and over and has the track record to prove it. He knows the community, he knows the kids and he knows the parents. He is and always has been a good fit for the community and is a success. No telling where I would be today without this program and the coaches that run it. We can't let this decison be influenced by a pissed off parent who still, after 10 yrs, thinks their son had more ability than he really did. Or because they wanted to wear their hair a certain way. When you start making concessions to that end, then you start to tear down the foundation of this program. Any successful program, business or organization has a set of standards that must be met to be a part of it. If you don't want to conform then I say that maybe THEY are the ones that, "don't need to let the door hit them in the rear on the way out". Mark my words... you let the naysayers have their way and this program is done in 5 yrs... maybe sooner. I love this program and this community with all of my heart, but I can also see the writing on the wall.

Athletics and education go hand in hand at the highschool level. These genious educators need to figure that out. There are many walking around with diplomas and good jobs today because football, or some other sport, kept them in school and forced them to pass. Without it, they would be another loss to the streets... You can't argue that fact people. I'm probably saying a little more about this situation than I should, but anytime it becomes a situation where its more about the color of the skin than the content of the character, then bad things are going to happen and no brainer decisions are botched. If you support Cornel Thompson then you need to let your thoughts be known. Not just here, but to Colbert or members of the committee. Preferably in letter form. Let him know he will be held accountable.

Let Me Try To Get A Jump On All Of You For 2011

I am not defending anyone, but i will say this... 3 of the players on that list are RB's: Mitchell (Sr) Robinson (Sr) Lindsey (Jr) We run the spread and our base offense has 1 RB and AAW you know that Lindsey would be considered the "starter". So there are 2 Sr's that would not be considered "starters" on offense. On defense, Lindsey (Sr), Woodson (So) and Lynch (So) were all LB's and they had a three man rotation in the 50 defense which has only 2 LB's on the field. Even though Lindsey played a bunch, the 2 Sophomore's actually started the games. So theres another senior you can knock off the list. Also, Colin Janice is a Sophomore not a Senior, so there's another. I don't know what that makes the count, but it is something I know about the kids on that list. -
Great job Longhorn players and coaches! You've made Orange proud! Now on to MS football! ;D
