A rested Defense will make more plays and lead to more points. That said, WOS has the athletes to score quickly no mater what offense they are running! The big question is will Cornell put the majority of his athletes on defense? Also from what I understand, this incoming freshman class will have the ability to be very diverse on offense. Good passing QB and several big time targets. Could see some flip floping in offensive philosophy over the next four years??
You might! They are a spread group from the ground up with a bunch of talent.

Coach Thompson has been in this business for a long time, and if he does change the offense, it's because he thinks it will suit the players he has the best.
Completely agree.  Sometimes coaches will impose a system on a team regardless of whether they have the personnel to run it successfully or not  (WO-S made that mistake in 2001).  I trust Coach Thompson NOT to do that.  Our returning QB (Salter) is better suited for a rushing style offense as opposed to the spread.  Plus, I can see the Mustangs running the spread part-time and make it all work.
Griff, from what I hear, there will be a bunch, maybe 100%, "I". I think our line is going to be much bigger this year and will be boasting the state power lifting champ. This might be the reason for the change. I don't think anyone knows better than Cornel what kind of athletes we have so I have faith that whatever offense we're in it's the best one for the team.
The 2000 offense wasn't flashy but we hung our hat on defense and field position.  I think (not worth much) that since we got our rear handed to us by Ennis in the championship game, our focus had been on a high powered offense rather than the basics.  I think if WOS gets back to defense first, and a ground focused offesne with the ability to throw the ball....it is a recipe for success.  The game is shortened, the D isn't on the field as much; which leads to field position and points on the board.
That's all fine and dandy, but the game is only shortened by the ability to move the chains. If you don't have the line to block in the "I", then you don't get first downs. You don't get first downs and the game is only short for your offense and extra long for the defense. This conservative offense can be the worst thing possible if you don't have the hosses to line up and make it go.

 4.
It is the right move.  Orangefield proved that if you bring something different to the table........it works.
Orangefields offense is nothing like the "I".
 5.
Thanks! And if you are who I think you are, great job with the group you had last year!
Thanks! But it isn't hard with a group like that... A ton of talent and just a great bunch of kids. I hate to see them go!
 6.
We have the athletes for it Gas!
Yes we do! I hope this is true! Search Youtube for the "The Pistol Offense" and "The Pistol Spread Offense" and check it out. I could DEFINITELY see that working for us.
 7. Nebraska also runs it. Nupe, I agree, that maybe fun!
 8.
I wasn't implying that he should broadcast his reason. Everyone has their opinion on everything else, so I just wanted to hear the expert take on this. If not, I'll just have to wait and see.
I'm taking the wait and see approach, like you. I'm sure someone will eventually come along with an opinion, though.
 9.
Does anyone know why Hodges was the choice for OC?  Does anyone at least have an opinion? Id be glad to hear it.
I don't know why Hodges was picked. To my knowledge, most coaches don't broadcast their reasons for selecting certain assistant Coaches nor are they required to. I trust in Coach Thompson's judgement for what is best for his team. That's my opinion.
 10. Pierce will run the 50. From what I've been able to find out, Hodges runs a bunch out of the "I". Looks like he runs about 70% of the time.
 11.
No need to take jabs at Hooks he let a few men coaches go and come to if I am not mistakes some more than once also
I don't think anyone is taking jabs at Coach Hooks. He was a great coach, but really didn't want to make some of the tough changes when he got up in years. Cornel will. He will expect the same work ethic from his coaches that he gives and he expects from his athletes. Those who don't want to work will not be around long. On another note, while I'm sure T had a hand in it. The Superintendent was the one who actually did the re-assigning.
The varisty ball is what we play with in our district, but if you use the smaller ball that will be ok. I remember last year HF used a smaller ball, but I dont remember yall using it. Use whatevr you use in school.
Most years it's a varsity size ball. But, we may have a very small QB this yr.  ;D Just making sure we could if that's what it comes to.

 15.

WOS ran the veer for several years after we won state. When our offensive line declined, so did our offense. We quit running it for a reason. I would be extremely surprised if we ran it again. Coach T was one of the main reasons we quit running it. If we are not in the spread, I would imagine it would be more of a pro style of offense similar to what we ran with Barry Norton.
Exactly, and I would be all for that.  Under Barry Norton, we ran a lot of I-formation sets with sufficient passing, especially during the Eric Anderson days.  Coach T said this week he wants to "run a little more."  He won't insist on us being a "run at all cost" type team.   I understand him to mean we'll increase the percentage of running plays compared to what we've done recently, but we won't become an archaic rushing team like the 80's Vidor squads (hopefully, we WON'T run the veer, either).   With that in mind, if our returning QB is better as a runner than a passer, then don't force him to throw the ball too much.  I remember in 2001 we stayed in the spread with a QB who looked totally lost in this system.  He was not a good passer, but we forced him into the spread offense with too many passing plays and it stunk.  That's just as bad as being primarily a running team with a front full of 170 lb lineman.   We can find some balance with a running game while still using our athleticism to stretch the field.  Oh yeah...and it would be a dream come true if we included a mix of passing into the middle of the field...something we've neglected for years.  All in all, I trust Cornel to make it work.
I agree Griff, it's about moving the chains... not a commitment to one style or another. As long as we play to our strengths and minimize our weaknesses we will be successful. Coach T has always been about that. Honestly, I really wouldn't mind seeing us try a little of that OF offensive scheme. They don't rely on huge athletic lineman, it's more about misdirection and discipline and quickness up front. With our skill guys in that type of offense, those 25 yd runs I see OF get over and over would be 80 yd TD's. But, then you have the short drive issue again and your D is back on the field.

 17. To run any ground oriented offense other than what Orangefield runs, you have to have the people up front to block it. We have not had that kind of personnell since the early 90's at WOS. I think it would be a mistake to scrap the spread because it gets ALL of your athletes (of which we have an abundance) involved while minimizing your lack of size/ability up front. I totally understand wanting to shorten the game and play keep away. But you can only do that in a run oriented offense by moving the sticks and if you can't do that then you can't score and you just put more pressure on your defense. Nothing worse than run, run, run, punt. Run, run, run, punt. I was watching our 1987 state title game against Rockwall a while back and I heard them say that the WOS line averaged 250 lbs... We ain't seen anything like that in years. I also know Coach T knows and understands this as well. That's why I don't think you are going to see a bunch of conservatism. More, probably, but you wont see a wholesale change, IMO. At least I hope not. IMO, the reason WOS has not seen more success the last couple of years has NOTHING to do with the type of offense or defense we run, but just not performing in the big game. Our last game the last 2 years we've had a total of 13 turnovers in those 2 games alone. You just can't win doing that.
 18. I know we will have an 8th grade. Working on someone to take care of the 7th.
 19. No matter what happened before now, Colbert and crew DID do the right thing. Yes, I was worried, but I think that Dr Colbert should have won trust from everyone in the community now. I have the utmost trust in him and Mr Hill. I think we have all the right people in place now. We score with a couple of board members in the next election and we are looking good!
 20. WOS will be there!
 21.
So we are going to cut coaches:  these people are the ones that supervise your kids on those EXTRA curricular activities, so now we are going to have less people keeping up with the same amount of kids?  In my opinion, this is not smart.  Less people to give more attention to your child? Less people to go the extra mile for your child? I am not saying that teachers don't do the same, because i know they do. Coaches spend a whole lot of extra time with their athletes......... and a lot of times serve as more than just a coach to these kids.  I just don't think that they should be the ones that get cut.  That's all i am saying..... it's MY OPINION..... it doesn't have to be yours.
I agree 112%
 22. Didn't SA win a state title not long ago?
 23. I'll say this about Erick Guillory, I think he is a snake that is in on this, but at least he been willing to interact with the public on the matter. However, the committee as a whole has failed to act with the "transparency" that was promised by Mr. Colbert.  Until that changes, they themselves are fostering the belief that this is not on the up and up.
There is a lot in your statement that I absolutely agree with. I think it would be nice to know who the candidates are also. It's times like this that I feel compelled to hold my tongue just because I'm running for the school board. However, that's not my style. Never has been, never will be. You having a RIGHT to know is absurd. Our only rights are found under the FOI act and no one is begrudging us that. That's like telling a cop he can't give you a ticket because you pay his salary. The public votes on the board, the board hires the Super, he recommends the AD then the board has to approve that decision. What you are wanting to do is micro-manage and that's never a good idea. Don't take what I'm saying as being on a different page as most of yall on here. I just think sometimes we think we are owed more than what we really are. We hire people to do a job. Let's let them do that job. If something is not on the up and up then there is a committee to stop it and if that doesn't happen then there is yet another line of defense and that is the school board that can also stop it. I understand the lack of confidence in the school board but if this thing goes in a different direction than we are all thinking, then there will be not only the Super, but the committee and the school board to hold accountable.
Place this post in bold letters and delete all the rest in this thread.
Well T, you and I usually agree on most things. Even now, I agree with everything you say. I don't feel like it's my "right" to know. However, when Colbert tells the media about this being a "transparent" process, then it turns out to be anything but that. It's going to give people cause for concern.
 24. The reason folks are getting upset is because the decision should be an easy one and from what some of the board members are making known (or should I say "a" board member) it's not going to be so cut and dry. Some may handle that frustration differently than others, but it is a stressful stuation for those who care about the community and the kids. Not saying you don't care mustangproud, but others see it differently. That's what makes this community special, right?
