Lot's of changes coming in the educational field.Gonna be a nightmare for not only administrators but for established coaches as well. Why in the world would these young bright kids pick this field when they are gonna be forced to coach sports they don't want and teach in fields they don't choose???? Financial realities put restrictions on Lamar football schedule
77 replied to WOSgrad's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Lamar had a better than average 1st year program but one has to think about other schools wanting to have a decent schedule also and an upstart program is not always the best way to go so give them time and some wins and the schedule will improve.. jmo -

Winning puts people in the stands, give them time and a winning tradition and the bigger games will come. Only been a year. -
Financial realities put restrictions on Lamar football schedule
I figured that some would call Coach's words unambitious. I prefer to call it tempering enthusiasm with realism. I love that football is back at Lamar, but let's not make this program something that it is not. It is not a program that has a lot to offer a Top 20 FBS team for that team to come to Beaumont. I'm not saying at some point that it won't. But let's step back folks! At this point last year, a team from Lamar University had not played a football game in over 20 years. You don't go from that to FBS ready in a year. I don't care about UTSA or others....Lamar is not there yet! I think of it as sort of a coup that in merely the 4th year of the revival of this program, Lamar will have managed to land on the schedule of a BCS conference team! Of course, I harbor no illusions as to why they will be visiting Stillwater, Waco, College Station or even Honolulu for that matter. It is for those schools to provide an opportunity for their fans, alumni and boosters to see their school kick the crap out of somebody. I still remember when ULL (then USL) went on their barnstorming tour which lead them to Jordan-Hare Stadium where Bo Jackson literally ran the Ragin Cajuns back to downtown Lafayette. They got exposure alright...an entire nation saying "Those poor, dumb bastards." But think of it this way, those that support the A&Ms, the UTs or the LSUs. Do you think that they flock to the games to see who has come to town? No. They flock there to see their teams play whoever it is that comes to town. That is why even when lil' Lamar University comes to town, Kyle Field will be filled to capacity. Whenever Lamar has that sort of following, not a following drawn by the novelty of the program or a concert following (that is a following drawn by who happens to be in town for the weekend), then it will be ready to host FBS teams.
Agreed Lamar just like other small schools go play the big games for the payday.. There is no advantage for the big boys to come play here. I wish the Cards luck in the future. -
So you men/women think its okay for a coach/teacher to say such things in front of parents and young children? I don't! If they feel the need to say such things to their players, then say it where no one but them can hear it! I don't expect them (the coaches) to be all surgery sweet to the players; however, when they (the coaches) are in the presence of the parents (aka: supporters) and young children, WATCH YOUR MOUTH! For whoever said my son deserved it: you are a real piece of work. Just for the record my son did not play that game; he was sick. I was still there though, supporting the kids. Working the concession stand. Buying the sodas. Ordering the shirts to support the team. As a matter of fact, it was the same day that I turned in the sponsorship money that I had collected for the baseball program. Don't talk about what you don't know!I know Coach Rojas would get onto the players; however, I don't recall ever hearing him curse like that in public. Practices yes, NOT in public for everyone to hear. As far as Coach T; I loved him when he was my PE coach in high school and I would have been furious had he not been appointed as AD. I think he will do a wonderful job. He has the knowledge, expertise, and personality that just makes him such a wonderful man. I'm sad to see Coach Hooks go; but couldn't ask for a better replacement.
I dont think that kind of language should be used on the field ever but it happens and keeping your son off the team will only hurt one person and its not the coach. -
After being around the program for years and seeing what has gone on, I am really just amazed at all of it. Here are facts- The last two head baseball coaches hired at WO-S had NO head coaching experience at all (one fired, and the last-not sure why he was let go). It is very clear how well that has worked out. Now the district goes out and hires the third in a row with no head coaching experience. I like Shea and wish him the best of luck, but you can not tell me that there are NO experienced baseball coaches out there who would not love to have a chance at the job. Why was the job not posted to see if there was other interest. It looks to me like the school has no interest at all in the baseball program and cares none if it is sucessful. That is unfair to the kids.
Even your beloved coach Hooks at onetime had no head coaching experience, coaches have to start somewhere just like everybody else. Give the man a chance. The days of Ronnie Anderson are long gone. -
well I guess my son won't be playing next year because I think Landry is a smart butt. Anyone who calls the kids "f(*&ing punks" and doesn't care that he says it in front of a parent deserves and gets no respect from me!
Dont let your son play? Yep that will show em! -
We won a four district games. (a far cry from the state championship talk straight from the coach) talk is cheap (i also read a quote in the paper proclaiming "WOS Baseball Is Back") Back in the day we would win four games in a weekend against much better teams. And although our coaches were tough, they were not verbally abusive to our youth and steered clear of preseason boasting. Coach T will make sure it "IS BACK" But not with words, he is a man of action.
OK thanks. -

I do believe it is flawed and I agree that for the cost it probably should be ended but I think the implementation of the test has slowed down the use of roids with just the fear of being caught just as the drug test have . -
Hope people remeber these 40 times when football season rolls around and they start talking about how fast the kids are on their high school team. Daddy times are sometimes not very accurate. just sayin.

Coach T? Those are his workouts. :D
:D :D I couldnt handle that Mustang Mile :D
Of course you could. Here is a funny story. When i was a freshman player there, I was fortunate enough to get info from a senior player. See, what thompson didnt tell the freshman is that you had to always beat your time from previous years. And folks, were talking about the mustang mile numerous times a year. Before it was all over, you had run it probably 15-18 times in 4 years. So what did I do? Took the advice. I ran my first Mustang mile as slow as I could without the coaches catching on. So by the time i was a Senior, I could beat my past times. ;D Now, I think i just ruined this for next years freshmen. Sorry, Coach T, it had to come out sometime. ;D
Being a kicker I'am not surprised you probably had on two different kinda of shoes! ;D Just pokin fun couldnt pass it up.

I've watched alot of baseball in my years from 6 yr olds all the way up and over the last 10 or 15 yrs. this kind of behavior has gotten worse and you dont have to look very far to wonder where they learn it. Few years back the police had to be called 4 times through out the season at a field where 7 & 8 year olds played and it was not due to the actions of the players but their good ole moms and pops sitting in the stands, coaches should not put up with foul mouth players at any level. Some people seem to forget to let the kids have fun and play ball . jmho
