1. Whitetail season is almost over and I have one hunt left. Time to break out and dust off the reels.............
 2. This is Lefty99's Axis that he wants posted. Good looking deer. Good eating too............. [IMG][Hidden Content]]
 3.
A really popular carry weapon these days is the Ruger LCP. It's a small light weight 9MM. My wife has a hammerless light weight 38 special that I really like. I really don't carry so I don't have a personal preference.
The LCP is a .380. The LC9 is the 9mm and is slightly larger than the LCP. Those are examples of what I was talking about of having no decockers, no external safeties and having the same trigger pull each time. The LCP can usually be tossed in the back pocket and not be noticed. The LC9 being slightly larger isn't always so good for that option but can easily be concealed other ways.
 4.
Like I said, my favorite handgun to shoot is a revolver calibered in .357 Magnum. I'm just not a big fan of using a revolver for a concealed carry weapon because appropriate revolvers would only give me a five or six shots. I know the statistics say that it's highly unlikely I would ever have to pull my weapon and even less likely that I would actually have to discharge it in self defense, but if that moment ever comes, I would much rather be over-prepared than under-prepared.
Glock 26 or 27 or M&P 9c or 40c.
 5.
Ok, what are the differences in the models y'all have and what are the differences in situations that would cause you to switch weapons? Most of the folks I know who have a CHL and multiple weapons explicitly for concealed carry will stick with one of them 90% of the time and only go to one of the others in rare instances. When I eventually get my CHL and purchase a gun, I'll probably be sticking with that gun all the time until I have a job and can afford to purchase more on my own. I've shot the Glock 26 several times and like the feel of the Glocks more than Sig Sauers and S&W pistols (although my favorite handgun is a S&W 686 revolver, but that's too big to purchase for concealed carry purposes and only gives me six shots). The main reason I'm considering the Glock 27 is because of that little bit of extra power, but the drawback is that it holds one less bullet in the magazine than the 26.
Westend has a good idea with the S&W hammerless like the Airweight. Awesome guns if that is what you are looking for. All weapons have positives and negatives. There is no perfect firearm. Here is my main idea on defensive handguns. Buy one that has one trigger pull and not things that you to flip to fire or make safe, I don't care what brand. My main dislike is the double/single semi-autos. The first two shots always have two distinctively different trigger pulls. It may be a 1 1/4" heavy trigger pull like 10 pounds on the first shot and a a 1/10" pull at 3 pounds on the follow up. While it can be learned, that is the kicker. It has to be learned. Then those types of handguns have to be "decocked" after each shot to lower the hammer back into a safe position which requires flipping either a safety or decocking lever. Handguns like a striker fire (Glock, xD, M&P) have the same trigger pull each time and no other levers to flip, put on or off safety, no decocker, etc. It is the same with revolvers. One trigger pull does it all. Then it comes down to personal preference by feel of the firearm, caliber, size, etc. Again, each has its pros and cons. Examples are a S&W Airweight revolver is a great little light gun but they are slightly wider than many semi-autos and they only have five shots. You can carry extract rounds but they are usually a good bit harder to hide and to reload. The semi-autos carry more rounds and are slimmer but many people believe that the light revolver is safer due to the longer and heavier trigger pull. So each one has its good points and its bad points. A lot might determine what your intent for the handgun is, where you intend to carry it, your experience level or amount of time you intend to actually practice, etc.
 6.
Any opinions on a good concealed carry gun? I'm looking at getting my CHL some time next year and was wondering what y'all might think. The Glock 26 and 27 have both been on my radar. Also, any knowledge on a Mosin Nagant M91/30? I've always had an interest in old military arms (including Russian ones) and that seems like a cheap, easy addition to the small collection sitting back home.
I have been carrying concealed for almost 30 years. I current have three that I usually carry most often. Through the years I have carried maybe 35 different handguns of varying types and sizes. Exactly what do you want to know?
 7. The one on South First Ave?
 8. $150 for an 870 is a great price unless it is a real junker, which I doubt. I would pay $150 for an 870 20 gauge almost sight unseen.
 9.
Anybody need a youth model shotgun?  Have a couple of 20 gauge youth models that we can't use any more.  One is an 870 that holds 3" shells, the other is a nice, synthetic 1100.
I actually like shooting some youth models more than standard models. I like the shorter stocks and I have even bought a youth stock for an 870 duty shotgun for better handling. Both of the ones you are offering are both great guns.
 10.
Not sure how heavy that thing is, but I wouldn't mind popping an axis with one if I could get it to fly right.
A .357Mag has to be very heavy compared to a standard broadhead. I might "fly" okay but I'll bet it has a drop like a 30/30 at 300 yards.
 11.

[Hidden Content] What do you think?
That is pretty cool.  Any idea on the rules for that?  Can you use it during bow season?
It is too late to look up such stuff but I will take a stab at it. It is obviously not a legal means of taking deer, mostly because it is not listed as a legal means. The taking of game animals and fish is strictly set out in the law on what is legal and exploding arrows isn't it. The key phrase there is "game animals". Unprotected animals can usually be taken by any means, at any time and with no bag or possession limits. Also note, that is a firearm under the definition of a firearm and subject to all laws in that area. Pretty cool though.
I am all for freedom of speech and expression, but it seems to me there is much in this post that is borderline site rule offenses.  Moderator opinion?
There is no such thing freedom of speech on a privately owned bulletin board or forum anyway so that is not even an issue to be brought up. The rules of this forum say no player bashing. Saying that my player is better than yours or my team is better than yours is not bashing, it is an opinion. It is also probably taunting and/or pot stirring. Those are not against the rules. Bashing in my opinion is saying that a named (or numbered) player is a low life, is a drug user, is a criminal, only gets to play because daddy pays off the coach, is a piece of crap, using profanity toward him/her (another rules violation in itself) etc. If we stop people from saying that one team is better than another, another player is better than another, my team is going to shut down your crummy team, my coach out coached your coach and other such statements, we might as well shut down the website and all gather in the park and have a group hug. That is my opinion. Another moderator might have a different view.
 13.
Okay, enlighten me guys.  Is the shell the deep water area north of the Causeway?  What type of rigging/ technique do you prefer on the shell.  I have little to no experience fishing on the shell, but from what I remember it is a whole different ballgame.
There is a lot of shell in that area including the deep water north of the causeway. The fish go deep when it is cold and sure aren't chasing shrimp across the top.... because they aren't hanging around there either. I try to fish deep right along the reef that time of the year. I think they pick up shrimp, minnows and other food hiding or hanging out in the shell..... and fish slow.
 14.
It's just about time to hit the shell reefs.  Any of you guys fish there too?
I caught my biggest speck ever (not huge but 6.1 pounds) on the reef in the deep water just north of the causeway bridge in late February. I was dragging a 6" bass worm along the bottom bumping off the shell when I got the bump.
 15. You don't show up on the ban list and your name doesn't show banned when looking at your profile. Is dogbite your sign on screen name?
 16.
tvc are you serious ?????.............
Yes, I am serious. I merely asked a question. I have no idea where the PA News draws their lines or where they distribute their papers now. I am not sure that what happened 35 years ago in 1978 applies.
 17.
wow !! no glen roberts on this team ? hasnt he been like the most prolific rusher and scorer over the past 2 years  in setx football (correct me if im wrong)? especially when teams know he is gonna get the ball he still gets yardage . hasnt he rushed for over 4,000 plus yrds and like 80 tds in the last 2 years ? you put this guy behind katy's line he would be unstoppable imo . he remeinds me of barry sanders , i would hope with his career that he has had  at east chambers 99 total tds and probably 5,000 trds rushing  ( he gets over a 100 if he doesnt get hurt against franklin and east chambers wins imo )a school like lamar isnt recruiting this guy ? all these great players in this area lamar should field better teams and they have players that can take that program to another level , with the right coaching .
Is East Chambers in the PA News distribution area? The paper picks their all star team from the districts in their normal area of distribution. Just like the Orange Leader team covers the districts in their area of sales. The PA News team isn't an all southeast Texas team but like most papers, one picked from their area.
 18. If it stays fairly cool and dry, it should be okay.
Rabbit gravy, stew or smoked rabbit is good.
Got a recipe for smoked rabbit?
No but I have eaten some cooked by a friend and it was literally some of the best smoked meat that I have ever eaten. I don't think he seasoned it much like maybe some salt and pepper and then smoked them for a good while at a low smoking temperature. They were not barbecued but that might be good also. We always ate them in a stew or gravy but the smoked was awesome.
 21.
Thanks tvc - very helpful information. TFO rods have a lot to offer and I have always liked Lefty Kreh.  The BVK series looks reasonable. Thanks again.
I watched Lefty tie flies at Orvis in Houston a few years ago and also went to the fly casting lessons that he was giving there. I had read his saltwater flyfishing book where he talks about casting like 100 feet just with the tip section. Then I witnessed it firsthand in about 15 mph winds. Unbelievable.

 23. I like an 8wt fast rod with a weight forward floating line (WF8F). I like the fast/stiff rod because of the wind usually present on the coast (which is why I like a WF line) and the fight in the reds. I have used 9wt and 10wt but the 8wt is more enjoyable to cast for long periods. I know that some people like a 9wt more because of the wind. The reds and trout will hit various styles of deceivers and poppers. For poppers I like the short big mouth saltwater poppers. Flies with chain bead eyes like the Crystal Minnow will sink a bit faster if you want to get it a bit more under the surface. I also have some sinking crab flies and they look great but I usually catch reds more shallow than on the bottom. Part of the problem may be my patience and where I fish. Sight casting for reds that are tailing will be good with crab flies where you are actually looking at a specific red that is slow moving and trying to draw a strike. As far as tackle, what are you looking to spend. As you know, you can get a decent casting outfit for $100 or spend $3,000. I like TFO for mid range tackle and that was the last rig I bought for red fishing but so much of it is preference and budget.
 24. A deep quartering round with a ballistic tip? Yeah, I could see that not penetrating, especially with a lighter round and/or on a hog. It will kill the same. Did you just get one lung? With my .270 I used to shoot Silvertips with 130gr and never had a problem but they weren't deep quartering shots into the guts. I am wondering which rounds would penetrate in that situation. I have shot the 62gr quartering on most of my deer and got good exit holes on every one of them but they were all double lung shots and sometimes the heart also. They were never shallow quartering shot with the round going way back. I know a lot of people use the old Remington Core-Lokt. They have been around since dirt but maybe that is why they are still here. Winchester also makes a much deeper penetrating round like the Power-Point and the bonded Power-Max. I have my .270 sighted for the Power-Max but haven't used it on a deer yet. I like the bonded rounds because they expand very well but hold together. Bonded rounds is what I shoot in the .223 and that tiny round makes about a .50 caliber exit hole. The bonded rounds just don't come apart. I have never used them but I read a lot on the hunting forums around Federal bonded rounds (which is the same brand of law enforcement bonded rounds we use and I hunt with) and the Federal Barnes all copper bullets (no lead) like the Triple-Shock. Some of them have ballistic tips but no lead so the entire copper bullet only expands on the nose and the solid copper round holds together. I have the Federal bonded LEO rounds so I see no reason to think otherwise with their bonded hunting rounds and it is likely that they are the same thing under a different name. I will say that the Federal rounds (Federal, Speer) are the only rounds that we issue for carrying on duty and that covers all pistol calibers, .308 and .223 and all bonded.
 25. For larger calibers like .270 and larger, I don't think it really matter. If you are talking about the Winchester ballistic silvertips, they are a polymer tip rifle ammo. It mostly stabilizes the round in flight and them rapidly expands the soft core. It is probably the most rapid expanding Winchester round and is meant to expend most of its energy in the animal but I normally get pass through shots. If those rounds will to through, I think almost anything will. If you send a high power rifle round through the heart and/or lungs, you are going to drop the animal. Now if you are shooting a lighter round, then you might want to stay away from the rapid expanding rounds and get one that has more penetration. Every deer that I have killed with a rifle in the last five years was shot with a .223 in only 62gr and all were killed and the never went beyond 30 yards. For those kinds of rounds, a rapid and light varmint round might not do the trick or will do it but the deer will run farther and you might not leave a blood trail. For a .243 and larger, I really don't think it matter much on the results and more what you have confidence in. Once you start reaching 100gr or more, as long as you don't have a true varmint round that almost explodes, you will be okay. Did you have some problems with the silvertip?
