The part about not taking culls is a problem but we are paying the price for a lot of other east Texas hunters. Even on here you have people that want to be able to shoot anything that moves and believe they have the right to do so. We have limits on fishing by size and now we have the same on deer. It is our own collective fault. I think it will still work in the long run.

The .243 is a great whitetail weapon. Any notion that somehow you have to track them farther with that round than others is ludicrous. I was reading on a hunting forum a couple of weeks ago where one guy said that the longest that he tracked a deer and eventually lost it was a hit with a 300 Win Mag. There are no magic bullets. Put it through the heart and/or lungs and they will do down. That is a huge target for a rifle. If you hit them only in the shoulder or guts then it won't matter much which round you missed with. The last two years, the only deer that I have shot with a rifle with 100% success was with a .223. Both shots were quartering away and I got complete pass throughs a lots of blood. Of course it really didn't matter because they went 30 yards or less. Both were double lung hits with large exit wounds. Of course, I have people that tell me that you can't do that with a .223.

Out of curiosity, of the many calibers available, is any of them really any better than the others at typical whitetail distances? Can a .308, .260, .270, .280, .264, , 25-06, 30-06, 7mm (the several available), 8mm, etc., do a better job than any of the others? I can see maybe a 300 Win Mag being better at extended ranges like maybe 600 yards but even that is debatable. I can understand the fairly light weight rounds like the 22-250, .223 and .204 maybe not having a lot of energy at say 200 yards. I see people make statements like, well if I decided to kill a bull moose in Montana then I wouldn't have to buy a new gun if I had a 300 Win Mag. That may be true but unless that is something on the immediate horizon on someone's agenda, is it simply wishful thinking or an attempt to justify something in someone's mind? I guess I could go buy a Ford 3500 pickup on the assumption that maybe someday I may decide to start my own construction company and may need such a vehicle. I love guns and think if someone wants a gun, who cares why? Buy five of each for all I care. Back to the original question, in the typical deer hunting scenario of usually 100 yards or less but almost certainly not over 200 yards, does it really matter?

I am sure they will go up to what the market can take. Out of the thousands of people on east Texas leases, I don't know how many of them are ready to pony up an additional $2,000 or more. Like I mentioned, the price per acre is not much different than in other areas anyway and the cost is offset by more hunters on the same amount of land. Like those in the west and south, I think the land owners/companies can price themselves out of the market, especially in the slow economy. When we have people that are already having a hard time with $700..........

[/quote] At 3,000 acres in east Texas you would typically have 25-30 hunters. The problem with east Texas that is completely unlike most of the rest of Texas is that people live there. Most of west and south Texas are uninhabited. There is hardly any land in east Texas that doesn't have someone living within half a mile or less. I have hunted a couple of south Texas ranches and it is miles and miles between cities or any communities. There isn't as much problem with poachers because most people don't want to drive for a couple of hours or more to kill a deer illegally. It is so much easier when you can sneak onto the lease or public land that is 400 yards away. There is also the money issue. While the cost per acre leased is not really much (if any) different, in east Texas they keep the cost down by stacking hunters. A typical east Texas lease runs about $500-$1,000. That is for maybe 100-150 acres per hunter. A south or west Texas lease might run $1,500-$5,000 per gun but you get 300-600 acres per hunter. The people that hunt south Texas do so because they can afford to hunt there. Most east Texas hunters don't have the option to pay $5,000 per gun because they simply don't have it. I hunt on a lease for $700 a year and have had people drop off because they can't get the money together to hunt it. Some that do hunt on it do so because they can't afford to hunt anywhere else. Half of the complaints on the new antler restrictions is the fact that many believe that it will cause the lease prices to match other parts of the state. That will price a lot of them out of hunting or either turn some into poachers or hunt on the overcrowded public land. East Texas could grow a deer herd that rivals west and south Texas if it was managed. The antler restrictions are a good start but if lease prices go up much, it will just compound the poacher problems.

When it got down to three birds and we were lucky to even get shots at three birds, is when I quit. I guess the days of three guys going out and bringing back 30 birds is over.

I haven't killed anything the entire season. Then again, I haven't killed any waterfowl since 1988.

I think the rut is the most misunderstood and misguessed thing about deer hunting. The rut always extends over an extended period. Does will go back into estrus if not bred the first time. Doe population has a great impact on the length and timing of the rut. The rut is not caused or initiated by cold weather and a few other tidbits. Anyone that can pinpoint the rut in a given area consistently and in a very narrow time frame (as in 90% of deer are bred in that small time frame), then they can be millionaires.

Here a cpl of miles West of Lumberton the main Rut is OVER no question about it, I go EVERY day, have been finding and watching scrapes since late Aug, just yesterday I looked at 5-6 and none have been worked since before the rain 2+ weeks ago. We too have taken 6 does to date and all have been bred, one of which was taken the first week and had a 2-3" fetus, I'm sure we will take 10 or so in the comming weeks, surely most will be bred, but my mission is to pick the 'baron does' out of the herd. IMO if your wanting to hunt the Rut go SOUTH or WEST [/quote] Must not have many does if they are all bred.

I don't remember ever making a shot to write home about. All of my deer kills have pretty much been broadside or quartering shots at 100 yards or less. I may have made some long shots on ducks back in the day but none specifically come to mind. I do remember making a head shot on a rabbit at about 60 yards or so with a .22 rifle and no scope or rest. Easy shot as the rabbit was in the open but just long for open sights.
