I saw some more lights come on in the south area of Port Arthur early Saturday morning, maybe about 12:30AM. More and more will be coming online very soon. -
I have talked to people at work that have Verizon (I only have their air card/wireless internet) and they claimed that the discount was for your main phone number. If you have companion lines or other charges such as insurance and also the taxes, are not discounted. Money is money so anything they give is great. I don't think they drop the whole bill however.

In reference to deaths, what would be the point of a cover up or not disclosing the information? The rumors are just that, rumors. Working in emergency managment, I have heard of no reports of deaths. This is just the kind of statements that go around when people start speculating. There is always the possibilty of deaths from this storm but the mass deaths being reported seems to be nonsense. -

I left Sabine Pass at 5:45AM as we tried to get people to leave that may have stayed. There were still people trying to leave when I got out. I was in a Ford Expedition and almost didn't make it out of some areas. There were areas of Sabine Pass with 3-4 feet over the roads already. The highway to Sabine Pass was going under in a few spots when I was coming out. -

The surge will really start increasing Friday afternoon and is supposed to peak from 3:00AM to 6:00AM on Saturday morning. So it will start tomorrow afternoon or evening and some time after midnight but before daylight Saturday, it will top out. -

Let me go ask. Some of the predictions are between 14-17 foot storm surge. I like those better than 20+. Hopefully it will stay outside the seawall and all this will be an exercise in fear. -

Yes, that is the current forecast. You staying? -
For anyone that is staying, they upped the forecast for the storm surge to 20 feet in the Golden Triangle. Anyone in Sabine Pass, Port Arthur, Bridge City or other low lying areas that has not left, needs to do so..... and hope they are wrong. The seawall around Port Arthur and Mid-County is 15 feet above sea level. Assuming that their forecast is correct, it could make New Orleans after Katrina look like a wading pool. Of course, if you can swim in 100mph winds while on top of 30 foot waves...... If this stays on the current forecast, it could be catastrophic damage in some areas.

With the predicted storm surge, it could be devastating for Bridge City. Let's pray that it stays farther west and doesn't strengthen. -
That might not be a bad idea if this thing keeps tracking to the east. Bridge City might not be a good option to ride it out.

Oh good. That means it won't hit them and will turn our way.... again. -
I'm not leaving... but it isn't because I want to ride out the coming storm.

According to where the storm makes landfall, it is entirely possible for Bridge City to get water over the streets. I think Bridge City is between 5 and 10 feet above sea level. This storm is pushing a larger storm surge than that. If it hits west of Galveston, you will probably be okay. If it starts moving our way and hit around High Island to Sea Rim, you might be in some serious trouble with water. You could potentially get several feet of water above some of the roads. It all depends on when and where. -

I haven't noticed one official sticking his/her chest out and saying how great Gustav was but maybe I missed something. Now they have called an evacuation with more than enough time for everyone to get out even though the storm still shows it hitting about 150 miles away. Exactly what other outcome are you looking for? Four days ago I said that if an evacuation is to be called, it would be at 6:00AM on Thursday. They are right on schedule.... although I will admit that I didn't think it was coming. But, they called it at the time that it needed to be called. -

I know this is very serious business but it is also a tad comical. We can't order a mandatory due to resources but we are going to order it anyway after we are saying that we can't but we can't get every out but we.......... Geez. I do have a question though. Other than a news flash on KFDM, who ordered it and if it was ordered, what are the plans, if any? I am hoping that at least maybe this will get the people off of work that need to leave if they wish to or can. -

And speaking of post counts, this thread has made it all the way to #5 all time on setxsports.com for total posts and #3 all time for most views. That is quite an accomplishment in a few days..... and there is still time for more. -

If I remember after reading the state Government Code under Emergency Management, if an entity calls for a mandatory evacuation, then they must provide transportation out for those that need it. The problem with buses is that it is not like the storm is now heading for us and no one else needs them. The rest of the Texas coast needs them also. They are still needed where they were sent also. Sure they could drive here by daylight. What do you tell the people that are waiting at the predicted landfall? So what you said, we're on our own.... IMO. They can call for an evacuation. To make it mandatory however might be out of the question if there is no transportation out. It doesn't matter who the elected officials are of this county. If the resources were sent elsewhere (as with Rita), there simply is no option. -

Again...... If meteorologists knew when, where and how strong a storm was going to be when it hit, there would be no debate. There are no computer models, hunches, guesses or anything else that can tell when, where and how hard a hurricane is going to strike. Educated guesses can be made on current data but even that is subject to change ever couple of hours. This is not an exact science. -

That's bull.. I'd be in my car and gone. They aren't saying that you can't leave. They aren't going to lock the gates to the city. It just will not be mandatory. I would be on the move also.
