Houston Yates 170, Houston Lee 35 - Final
Rebel Yeller replied to cutt's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
If you have the fastest horse in the race is it your job to hold back the reigns so that the rest of the pack does not lose by so much? If a coach has taught a team to play a certain style of basketball and that is what they do best or that is the only thing they do then why are they classless if they play their game their way. I saw Yates in a televised tournament during the holidays. While I was not able to see all of the game they were having their hands full with some team. That opponents played them hard for what I saw and their coach was not asking for Yates to back off what they do, he was cacohing his team to pick it up on both ends of the floor to make Yates work for everything that the got. Let Yates play and let the others play better to stop them. -
Evadale 2009 team to beat
Rebel Yeller replied to GET a HIT #24's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
What does it take to be called a team to beat? Is it winning a district championship? - Well the Rebels have done it two stright years without losing a single game in district play. Is it playoff experence? - Well the Rebels made it three rounds to the regional semi's before losing to Maud who was state ranked all of last season. Is it a veteran roster? - Well the Rebels lost two seniors off of last years squad a pitcher and an outfielder. The roster also includes last years All State DH in Tyler Tucker. Is it committed players? - Most of the team played summer league in Kountze last summer having good seasons and competing against talent that attends larger schools. They held their own and even some have commented earlier in this thread that they played very well. Is it quality replacements for players lost from last year? - Well the Rebels have at least 4 pitchers this year that have varsity experience and most of they all pitched in the playoffs last season. Several players will be competing for playing time in the outfield. Again with only two seniors there is not too much to replace, but with the addition of Chase Franklin who transfered to Evadale at the start of the year from Chester (an All District player) with a couple of players who will move up from JV the roster is pretty well set. Is it game expereince? - Well in 1A the Rebels have one of the only JV teams in this area so they have been playing 2A and 3A teams to get better and last year they did well against those teams. Is it coaching? Well this season Mark Williams steps down to the JV to work on developing talent for the varsity squad (how many other schools in any classification have a coach that has a State Title coaching the JV?) Coach Billy Bryant steps into the 3rd base coaching box after many years of leading a very succesful program at Bridge City with several trip to the State tournament. Do any of these facts qualify in a discussion for a team to beat? - Well you might think not, but then again you might agree that there is at least enough evidence to warrant a discussion. Just for everyones information this years Rebel team will likely have fewer than five seniors and that includes only 3 starters from last years team. So the point could already be dicussed that the Rebels are not only the team to beat in 2010, but in 2011 too! -
I am one of the first to talk about comparing class 1A to 2A and 3A. But one thing that has to be said for the Rebels is that they don't shy away from the bigger schools. This is just another example of that. Will the Rebels win, well we will know for sure around 3 this afternoon. But win or loose I will still be proud of our team. Playing the #8 3A team in the state. Well it is unlikely we will face a better team the remainder of the season and it will only make the Rebels better in the long run. If you take a look at the Rebel roster you will see that there are only four seniors on the squad. Coach Jason Wilkins is molding a program and these players have been on the varsity since they were freshmen. Silsbee winning, it is a likelyhood, but the Rebels will let them know they were in a game. Winning is something Evadale likes to do and across the board they do. The two state championship monuments in front of the gym are a constant reminder of the winning tradition and believe me there are plenty of players, girls and guys who are looking forward to adding a few more pieces of granite to the sideway in front of Rebel Gym. Have a great game Rebels!
What about the rest of the Franklin kids? Chester or Evadale?
Everyone except Tracy (Dad) is at Evadale. Madison is playing for the Lady Rebel varsity basketball team.
You have Chase Franklin listed as from Evadale. i thought he played for Chester?
Chase tranfered to Evadale before the beginning of the season when his mother took a teaching position at the high school. He started at fullback and was a back up inside linebacker on this years championship team.
Spurger played without Blankenship and then lost another starter due to injury in the second quarter.
Aggie, what happened to Blankenship? Several have asked on another thread, but no one has said. What was the injury and how long is he expected to be out. It had to be serious since the stopped the WS game in the 3rd quarter.

In order to counteract the negative talk about Evadale's weak distirct the Rebels will schedule the most difficult schedule in school history They will play Southlake Carrol, Odessa Permian and the University of Texas all on the raod next fall. Just kidding! But I believe we might schedule a couple of area 2A's. Persoanlly I would like to see us play Buna and Woodville, but all of that will be determined on realingment day as the coaches get in the room and make district schedules and then work the rest of the schedule out. If realignment drops us to a 5 team district then instead 3 non district games there will be six so who knows how the schedule will come out. Even if HD, WH and Colmesneil end up in a D1 district I could still see Evadale playing at least two of the three in non district action.

I have lived in Evadale for 8 years. My wife has taught at both Buna and Evadale High School. There is no doubt that their is no love loss between the two communities. I have had the opportunity to live in several areas and one thing always happens, one community close to another really does not care for one another. Believe me it is worse if they have high schools that are the same size and end up in the same district together. But in our case we are different classifications and so our playing can only happen if our coaches choose to make it happen. These are two proud schools that adore their teams and players. It seems interesting that at the present time Buna has a coach that grew up in and played for Evadale, while Evadale has a coach that did the same at Buna. Do you think they had to turn in their former student cards because they now wear those hated other colors? Come on, folks! People know my support for the Rebels, but will my life be ruined if the Cougars have a great year in baseball or any sport for that matter. If the teams end up playing in baseball I hope that it is the biggest crowd of people ever at a baseball game. Believe when I say that the winner won't be treated like a WWE loser and have to leave Jasper County. And further more I hope that both teams bring home hardware from Round Rock this season! Just Like I hope Kirbyville wins the football championship and that Kountze, HJ, Ozen or some other team wins basketball, and any other SETX teams win in track, softball, golf, tennis and one-act play. Good luck to both teams as the season approaches and if we do play I hope to see both communities well represented in the bleachers.

Fort Worth High Schooler Dies After Baseball Tryout
Rebel Yeller replied to a topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
This is tragic. I grew up in FW and not too far from Southwest. They have a great baseball tradition and a coupleof state titles. The Raiders (they were the Rebels when I was growing up) have sent many players to college and to the pros. I am sure that the school is in shock and needing all our prayers as they work through this young mans death. Prayers go out to the family, his friends, his coach and his teammates. -
Prayers from West Sabine to Spurger

It must have been very serious for the game to be called, what happened? Can we the boy's name, so we can pray for him by name. -
The Evadale Lady Rebels have begun the season with a 7-3 mark and entered the TABC poll at #25 this week. The program under Coach Robert Hollyfield continues to churn out outstanding players and teams year in and year out. This years team has had to replace 4 of 5 starters off the reginoal semi finalist team that graduated last year. This year three seniors have stepped up and are providing team leadership, Carly Drake, Bailey Gravis and Ariel Wills. All three of these young ladies were a big part of the 2008-2009 team with plenty of experience. Juniors this year are Aston Clark and Sierra Griffin. Sophomores are Holly Herrington and Kacy Jones. Freshmen are Madison Franklin, Kenedy Jackson and Britnee Rawls. Griffin and Jones are starters for this years team. The Lady Rebels always play a challenging non district schedule with 2A and 3A teams to prepare for the district campaign. The Lady Rebels should continue to climb the rankings and will be fun to watch as they strive to win another district championship and amke their way into the state playoffs.

But it could be anyone!
I have not seen Evadale play this year. Do they have anybody that can stay with Starks point guard?
Stay with her, well that would be tough for any body, but I think they can contain her limiting her effectiveness.
;D You are right in your assessment of the Starks point guard...it would be tough for any defensive player to try to play her "head up". If you do have success limiting her, you go a long way in slowing down Starks. Good luck. PS, thanks for your reply Rebel. After I posted, I was afraid Evadale fans might think I was slighting the Evadale players and that is certainly not the case. I just know how tough Baleigh Bussell is for Starks and have not seen Evadale to know how they will try to match up with her.
Miss Bussell is one fast quick young lady and has been for several years. She has been on the varsity since the 6th grade, seriously, remember that LA allows smaller schools to play middle schools, 6th grade included on high school teams. So I think she still has a couple of years left to play. I know if she was 8 to 10 inches taller that she would have colleges lining up to get her signed. No slight was taken as I knew exactly what you were talking about when you posted and Coach Hollyfield would likely concur. She is a very good player. -

Deweyville and Evadale Sat.11/28 Who you got?
Rebel Yeller replied to True Blue's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
This will be the Rebels first round ball action of the year. They have had four practices so far and it sounds like Deweyville has a good team this year as they defeated Sabine Pass earlier. The Rebels have had some good practices, and return most of last years team. The Rebels have lost one senior, one transfer and have one out from an injury. So we will see just how well they do when they hit the floor. The JV starts at 2 PM and the varsity will be at 3:30 PM. Go Rebels! -
Yeller thanks for the post. It's Andy Tanner not Tammer. Also I see Gilmore got 1st team RB, but got nothing at linebacker. Come on !!! Got to be a typo.
55 just typed what I got from the Evadale coaches. It must be right since others that were sent included the Enterprise, Silsbee Bee and a couple of TV stations. On Tanner that was my typo, sorry the correct spelling is on the list that went out.

Congrats to James for his selection and all the players.

Hey Checkmate Just a question, who do you support? I may have missed the team that you support in your posts, but I would like to know. Not starting anything, not bad mouthing you, not complaining about refs last night and not talking about my team except for my handle. Just want to know who's the team you are pulling for on Friday nights?
