1.
Okay, here are my two cents. For those of you that don't know, I am, well, I WAS a player as of last friday at around ten o'clock. I have played HJ basketball for 4 years now, and I can honestly say that in all my four years, I have never seen a team as disciplined as LaVega. They were in a lot of ways like Nederland except far more athletic. They did nothing dumb or flashy, they just played solid, fundamental basketball. Players from LaVega were where they were supposed to be at all times. When we went up one with forty seconds left and tried to make the pass up the court to get it across and stall, the LaVega players knew they needed to get the ball. They knew who our go-to guy was Prudhomme, so they stuck to him like glue. No timeout was needed to tell their players where to be. The defense they played was awesome. Not perfect, but awesome. They started out soft and let you get the ball up the court for the first part of the game, then around the third quarter, they started a little half-court trap defense, then once crunch time came around, there was full-court pressure! HJ knew how to beat it and had prepared for it, but Friday night, after getting ready to take the floor because Athens was shooting free-throws to win it basically, and then having to wait through TWO overtime periods did something to both teams that night, I can promise you that. LaVega was a [s]good[/s] great team. Their will to win was just like that of HJ's. They were not unbeatable, and anyone who watched Friday night could have told you that. HJ, I dare to say, COULD have one that game, but I don't think SHOULD have one the game. Were we capable of winning that game? NO DOUBT!!!!! But capability, probability, and actuality are three totally different things that can be extremely painful when they all don't agree. Now for the most important part of my post. LaVega's basketball team (not it's fans, because I am hearing differently of them, although I'm not positive about them) was the classiest group of young men I have seen in a LONG time (aside from HJ of course). They were extremely happy that they one that game, but when we went to shake their hands, there was not an ounce of sneering or disrespect coming from them. All they had were positive things to say about us and I think that is the most important aspect of High-School athletics. After the game when we were waiting on the bus to come pick us up at the back of the Coliseum, they came out AGAIN and shook all of our hands, congratulating us on a great season and complimenting all of us. They were extremely well-mannered, and if I HAD to lose to anyone, I'm glad it was them.
Who is this guy?  Ha!

I was impressed with what I saw. But guess what? Still aren't good enough to beat my Houston teams  :D
What gives?  Why would you even think that the local talent from Sour Lake, Nome, China, Silsbee, Kountze, etc. would be in anyway competitive with talent from Houston?  It's all about numbers - Houston has them and Southeast Texas doesn't - duh!  So why do you claim Houston teams as yours when your boys play for a Beaumont school - seems somewhat hypocritical.

They are in district with Yates.  He said Yates JV is better than the Yates' varsity.
Is it me or does it strike anyone else as odd that Yates JV would be better than the varsity?  Am I missing something?

The metro plex is growing down there, and I'm pretty sure they got more nicer venues, and better arena's.
I'm not sure what "more nicer venues they got" you are referring to but the state championships need to stay in Austin.  If you are competing for a state championship in Texas, you need to compete for it in the capitol of the state - Austin!
 8.
This was a tough loss to stomach.  La Vega was not better than the Hawks tonight.  I would've felt better about this game if they had come out and beat the hawks by 15-20, and i could sit back and say "man, that's a good team, they'll probably win state".  that wasn't the case tonight.  HJ didn't play that well, was the victim of a few questionable calls, but were still in a position to win.  with a 1 point lead and 35 seconds left, HJ got a steal and had a chance to go to the line to end it, and ended the game with a couple of turnovers that turned a 1-point lead into a 3-point deficit.  then Johnson's three rattled out that would've tied it.  this one hurt.  I honestly think HJ was the better team, as they really didn't play that good of a game, and still should've won.  what's worse is between what silsbee has coming back, losing Prudhomme, and the houston schools dropping down to 3A, this was probably HJ's last chance to go to state for awhile, and had they made it through this region, there wasn't a team they were going to face that was any better than the teams they'd faced in regionals.  all of that whining being done, great season to the hawks.  39-2 is a fantastic year by any stretch of the imagination.  Good luck to the seniors in the future, and i look forward to seeing another very solid HJ team next season.
Bullets I completely agree!  The late turnovers hurt & DJ's three being so close and not going in was like a dagger to the heart.  After reviewing the regional program, Athens, HJ & La Vega were built to make their best run at state this year with each school losing at least seven seniors(La Vega had nine).  Silsbee, losing only one senior, should not only be the prohibitive favorite for district champions next year but also perhaps a regional favorite.  Yes, should HJ and or Silsbee made it through regionals, they were not going to face any better teams beyond that point than what they had faced in their region.  Like you said, with the Houston schools shift to 3A, we'll have to wait awhile for any success in that classification.
 9.
I don't think "choke" is the right term.  I give LV lots of credit for the man defensive pressure they were able to apply.  HJ just couldn't shake it.  There were two bad passess at the end of the game that hurt, but there were lots of other bad passess as well. Both teams played well and LV hit it at the right time.
Yes - LV's man-to-man defense was very impressive.
Glad to see Zjori taking on a more aggressive role - he needs to continue that for HJ to advance.
Bosha only had 25!!!  But I agree Bosha will play a HUGE roll the rest of the year, just as he has all year!!! Great heart, Hawks!!!!
I thought it was the most inconsistently called game I think I have ever seen....impossible to adjust to as a player....it just depended on which one was in the trail.
